A rainy, cold, and windy Wednesday

Another rainstorm rolling through Burbank and the rest of the Southland today. Rain will be falling off and on, sometimes heavy, this morning. Weather watchers are calling this a fast moving storm — saying we should begin to dry out by this afternoon.  However, a cold and very windy system is hitchhiking on this storm — and it will bring some chilly temps and what they are calling “dangerous” wind conditions.  SoCal is expected to be battered by 50-to-60 mph winds. There is a lot of debris... Read More →

Sun comes out after storm barrels through Southland

The still soggy Southland got dumped on by another storm system. A sunny Christmas Day brought out joggers in shorts and tee shirts in the Media City, however, dark clouds rolled in during the late evening bringing rain and gusty winds. At 8:30 p.m. Christmas night, rain was pounding Burbank and would continue to do so, off and on, for several hours. Early this morning, the storm blew out of the Southland leaving behind cloudy skies and some sunshine. However, we could get a rainstorm repeat by mid-week.  Today’s high... Read More →

Holiday Highlights: “Twas the Night Before Christmas”

“Twas the Night Before Christmas,” also called “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” has become a holiday tradition for young and old. There is some debate over — was it Clement Clarke Moore or Henry Livingston, Jr. who originally wrote the poem back in the 1800s. No matter, the wonderful words are timeless and conjure up the magic and hope of Christmas Eve. There are many variations of the famous poem. Here’s one version: Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung... Read More →

The Christmas spirit at work in Burbank

Around 500 Burbank families are enjoying a happier holiday season thanks to the giving caring spirit of the Burbank Coordinating Council, its donors, and volunteers. The council is like the “little engine that could.” Nothing stops it — least of all a few days of record breaking rain and chilly temperatures. Going strong since 1946, the council is the driving force behind the Holiday Basket Program, which coordinates with individuals, organizations, the entertainment studios, local schools, churches, and companies to provides hundreds of boxes, bundles, and bags of groceries and... Christmas Eve lottery jackpot $168 million!

The Mega Millions jackpot is bulging with holiday money — at least $168 million! Each ticket is worth $195,910.  One of those lucky tickets was purchased right here in the Southland at La Fortuna Market, 824 Lincoln Boulevard in Venice.  The winning numbers from Tuesday’s draw: 8, 11, 12, 31, 32... City Buzz

“Rain rain go away” When will it stop? Soon is what the weather watchers are saying about this deluge. Like most of  the Southland, Burbank is soggy from several days of heavy rain. The worst of the storms is rolling across Los Angeles County now through mid-afternoon. I was out driving in the Media City shortly before 9 a.m. this morning . The rain was moderate, but the forecast is for heavy periods of rain, scattered thunderstorms, strong winds, and even some hail before the day... Read More →

President Obama teams up with the Los Angeles Lakers

The repeat World Champion Los Angeles Lakers went  to the White House to celebrate a championship win last year. So this time around, they did something different to honor their latest accomplishment. Earlier this month, on December 13, the Lakers visited with members of The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington. Part of the time was spent with the kids assembling care packages and writing letters to wounded military men and women, as well as putting together special gift kits for the homeless in DC. For fun, the players and coaches... Read More →

Photo: NASA/Bill Ingalls --Lunar eclipse over Arlington, Virginia December 21, 2010

Photo Gallery: A rare cosmic event

Thick storm clouds blocked the total lunar eclipse here in the Southland last night, but it was seen elsewhere. The NASA photo above shows the eclipse in the skies over Arlington, Virginia. A lunar eclipse occurs only at night when there is a full moon. It happens when the Earth lines up directly between the sun and the moon, blocking the sun rays and casting a shadow on the moon, according to the NASA website. During the eclipse, the Earth’s atmosphere turns the regular gray color of the moon to a... Read More →

Holiday Highlights: Dining at the Tally Rand

I joined friends for Thanksgiving dinner at the Tallyrand located at 1700 West Olive Avenue in Burbank. Surprisingly, there were several different entrees on the special menu, but I went for the traditional turkey dinner — which is one of the specialities at the Rand. I was not disappointed.  It was a very good meal, except they only served pumpkin pie and I had a taste for apple pie. The holiday season is a busy time at this long-time Burbank eatery known for its great breakfast, home style cooking, and reasonable prices. Oh, and they... Read More →
