Holiday Highlights: “Twas the Night Before Christmas”

“Twas the Night Before Christmas,” also called “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” has become a holiday tradition for young and old. There is some debate over — was it Clement Clarke Moore or Henry Livingston, Jr. who originally wrote the poem back in the 1800s. No matter, the wonderful words are timeless and conjure up the magic and hope of Christmas Eve. There are many variations of […]

The Christmas spirit at work in Burbank

Around 500 Burbank families are enjoying a happier holiday season thanks to the giving caring spirit of the Burbank Coordinating Council, its donors, and volunteers. The council is like the “little engine that could.” Nothing stops it — least of all a few days of record breaking rain and chilly temperatures. Going strong since 1946, the council is the driving […]

Christmas Eve lottery jackpot $168 million!

The Mega Millions jackpot is bulging with holiday money — at least $168 million! For weeks now players have been unable to pick all six winning numbers in the Mega Millions game. Same goes for last Tuesday’s draw.  However, four tickets bought in California came pretty close — every winning number except the Mega Ball. Each ticket is worth $195,910.  One of those lucky tickets was […]

City Buzz

“Rain rain go away” When will it stop? Soon is what the weather watchers are saying about this deluge. Like most of  the Southland, Burbank is soggy from several days of heavy rain. The repeat World Champion Los Angeles Lakers went  to the White House to celebrate a championship win last year. So this time around, they did something different to honor their latest accomplishment. Earlier this month, on December 13, the Lakers visited with members of The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington. Part of the time was spent with the kids assembling […]

Photo Gallery: A rare cosmic event

Thick storm clouds blocked the total lunar eclipse here in the Southland last night, but it was seen elsewhere. The NASA photo above shows the eclipse in the skies over Arlington, Virginia. A lunar eclipse occurs only at night when there is a full moon. It happens when the Earth lines up directly between the sun and the moon, blocking the sun […]

After more than 25 years, a sequel to the 1982 “Tron” film hit theaters and it captured the Box Office crown over the weekend. The final numbers came out today and “Tron: Legacy” debuted with $44 million to become the number one  film in the country. In the “Tron” sequel a brilliant software programmer and his son are reunited in a cyber  universe where they must battle for survival, […]

Holiday Highlights: Dining at the Tally Rand

I joined friends for Thanksgiving dinner at the Tallyrand located at 1700 West Olive Avenue in Burbank. Surprisingly, there were several different entrees on the special menu, but I went for the traditional turkey dinner — which is one of the specialities at the Rand. I was not disappointed.  It was a very good meal, except they only served pumpkin pie and […]
