Freaky weather: sunshine, rain, and hail in Burbank

A brief period of sunshine gave way to more dark clouds, then rain, and just before noon, hail in Burbank!  The hard pebbles pounded the roof of my house and created white patches of quickly melting ice on the ground in the hillside area. The weather is freaky out there today. Don’t get faked out by a little sunshine —  keep that umbrella handy.

Sunny and cool on President’s Day

A lot of sunshine in Burbank on this President’s Day, although, the temperature is warming up slooowly. The hillside area was awash in sunshine this morning, but my walk was still quite chilly. The temperature didn’t seem to bother some. I saw folks diligently cleaning up storm debris and one ambitious neighbor was out painting her house! Despite some lingering clouds– no rain in the forecast — at least until the end of the week. The high in B-town today in the upper 50s to the low 60s. A nice day to continue to dry out from the storms and... Valentine's Day clip art of two hearts locked together

Mega Millions jackpot grows to $64 million and a Southland ticket worth $403, 806

No one hit the jackpot by picking all of the winning numbers in last night’s Mega Millions lottery draw. The lucky digits are 5, 6, 7, 30, 45, and the Mega Ball 42. Two California tickets got all but the Mega Ball number right. Each is worth $105,764. Also, we’ve got a local winner who scored big time on the day after Valentine’s Day. In last Tuesday’s draw, one ticket matched the winning numbers 17, 18, 24, 35, and 39 –but missed the Mega Ball number of 18. That... Read More →

Strong winds in Burbank — big storm approaches

Strong winds were batting around trees and scattering debris in Burbank at noon today, but the weather picture is expected to get even more dramatic in the next few hours. The forecast is for serious winds with gusts up to 40 mph —  as much as  70 mph gusts in the mountains. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory warning that the conditions can make driving hazardous and knock down power lines and poorly rooted trees. Also, a lot of rain is coming. While we got some sun this morning in... Read More →

Mega Millions jackpot leaps to $52 million

The money is stacking up once again in the Mega Millions lottery game. No one picked all of last Tuesday’s winning numbers: 17, 18, 24, 35, 39, and the Mega Ball 18. That pumped the jackpot up to $52 million. One ticket, bought in California, got all but one of those lucky numbers right. That ticket was missing the correct Mega Ball number. That ticket is worth $403, 806 — not bad for a dollar investment.   Th next draw is tomorrow, Friday, February 18 at 8 p.m.

Storm preps: More rain coming — City of Burbank offers free sandbags

The rain stopped and the sun came out around noon in Burbank today. The fair weather did not last long. A heavy rain cell unloaded on the hillside area just before 1 p.m.  In addition to the on-again off-again rain, some strong winds are whipping through B-town. This is only a prelude. A really big storm is expected to roll into the Southland by this weekend, bringing as much as 3-to-6 inches of rain in the foothills. Storm preparations are underway in the local burn areas. Meanwhile, the city of Burbank... Read More →

Raindrops falling in Burbank and much of the Southland

Raindrops falling in Burbank tonight. We got a fine mist this morning — now it’s light rain with heavier showers reportedly headed our way over the next few days. There’s rain in the forecast through next Tuesday. Great for the lawn and the flower garden, not so good for commuters out on the slick roads and highways. Also, cool temperatures tomorrow — a high in the mid-to-upper 50s is predicted for the Media City. Winds are expected to kick up on Wednesday, too. This storm system is dumping snow in the... Valentine’s Day: Time to show garden rose bushes some love

“Think about me on Valentine’s Day. That’s when you need to fertilize,” recommended gardening expert, Emilio Telles, during the rose care class at Armstrong Garden Center in Glendale, on Saturday, January 15, 2011.   Telles used another holiday, Halloween, as a stopping point for fertilizing rose bushes. Telles’ January class focused mostly on the pruning of rose bushes. I took Armstrong’s “Rose care for beginners,” last May and wrote about it in this blog.  So for this winter class, I was taking detailed notes on pruning because I was ready, for the first time, to cut... Community Views: Burbank sidewalk controversy

My name is Janet Diel. As a 31 year Burbank resident, long time member of the Advisory Council on Disabilities and Chair for the Barriers Sub-Committee, I felt it imperative to present my views regarding the lack of sidewalks on 1800-1900 Screenland. For Seniors and Disabled members of our community sidewalks would allow street access to those with walkers, canes, wheelchairs and motorized scooters. It is discrimination to have them “move to the next street” to travel up the block. Having sidewalks would allow access for families with small children... Read More →

Valentine’s Day contest & the hot selling Michelle Obama dress

Any doubts that First Lady Michelle Obama is a fashion trendsetter were put to rest this week. Mrs. Obama appeared on “The Today Show” last Wednesday morning, wearing a version of a navy polka dotted dress from the spring collection of Swedish retailer, H&M. The price tag, a modest $34.95. Mrs. Obama version had sleeves and was accessorized with an orange belt and lemon yellow pumps. People magazine says the First Lady “rocked” that dress and apparently a lot viewers agreed. Mrs. Obama’s appearance on “Today” sparked a huge... Read More →
