Burbank City Clerk corrects mistake in election numbers

Folks have been talking about the odd anomaly in the final results for the Burbank General Election since those numbers were released on Friday, April 15, 2011. The 95 vote difference between the city council contenders, Emily Gabel-Luddy and Bob Frutos,  got most of the attention, however, some have been curious about the sudden increase of more than 450 votes for “Yes” on Measure U. Burbank resident Kevin Muldoon asked about the big jump in votes for “Yes” on Measure U, last Tuesday at the city council meeting. Another B-town resident, Eric Michael Cap, followed-up... The recount: My rejection letter from the Burbank City Clerk

A postal carrier knocked on my door yesterday. The reason: I needed to sign for a certified letter from the Burbank City Clerk’s Office. The letter is the official rejection  of my offer to replace Burbank resident George Marciniw in the recount request process. Here’s the letter.   April 26, 2011 Fronnie Lewis XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX Dear Ms. Lewis, This communication is in response to your letter dated April 21, 2011, in which you acknowledge Mr. Marciniw’s withdrawal of his request for a recount of the ballots cast for the office of City... My letter to the Burbank City Clerk offering to join the recount request

Thursday, April 21, 2011 was full of surprises.  Suddenly, Burbank resident George Marciniw made a run for the hills; just a day after filing a labor intensive and all important recount request with the election watchdog group, Protect California Ballots, at the City Clerk’s Office. The organization’s founder, Judy Alter, remained true to the cause of reviewing the entire city council run-off to see how the Burbank mail-in ballot system had worked or failed. Alter didn’t bail out or run from this difficult process. It was an extraordinary opportunity to learn... Read More →

The recount drama: George Marciniw’s letter

A lot of developments in the recount drama surrounding the Burbank city council run-off of 2011. First, I think it is important to post here George Marciniw’s personal withdrawal letter from the recount process. The April 21 letter has been debated and probably will continue to produce heated discussion all over B-town for a long time. Thursday, April 21, 2011 The Office of the City Clerk Margarita Compos 275 East Olive Avenue Burbank, CA 91502 Dear Margarita, After speaking with Mr. Frutos and per his request, I feel that it would... President Obama releases long form birth certificate

Today President Obama attempted to put the brakes on the rumor machine pumping out innuendo and cheap shots about his birth certificate. One of the requirements to run for President of the United States is that a candidate has to be a natural born citizen, according to the U.S. Constitution. In 2008, the Obama campaign posted a birth certificate normally sent out by the state of Hawaii. This is the same certificate used to get a driver’s license, is recognized by the Federal Government, and is used in all legal matters. For whatever... Read More →

A sizzler in the Media City today!

The heat is on in Burbank today. The temps have been creeping up since Monday. Yesterday’s high was 82.  Today the high is expected to reach 90 degrees! Like yesterday it will be breezy at times — but mostly just hot and sunny. Some dramatic swings in the weather lately. On Easter Sunday, we got light April showers in the morning and cool temps most of the day. Now, we’re dealing with high temps and windy conditions. Despite all the changes, the plants and flowers seem to be thriving well in... Read More →

The recount: Why I support it and what will it cost

Once again an issue has divided B-town. This time it’s the city council run-off recount. Some folks figured out quickly that this recount is a good way to have a public review of Burbank’s controversial mail-in ballot election system. I agree with this point of view. Last Thursday when Burbank resident, George Marciniw, abruptly withdrew from the recount process, putting it in jeopardy, I was one of the voters who stepped up to keep it alive. The other two are Kevin and Linda Muldoon. Readers of... Read More →

It might rain on the Easter festivities

A chance of rain tonight and on Easter Sunday. We had mostly cloud skies with some periods of sunshine today in the Media City. There’s a 20 percent chance of rain tonight and on Sunday.  You’ll have to dress warmly on Easter with the high expected only in the upper 60s — maybe  low 70s. Go ahead, wear an Easter hat, but you might want to take along an umbrella for some cloudy skies that could let loose with some light showers. HAPPY EASTER!!!

More on the recount of the Burbank City Council run-off

The parties behind the recount of one of the tightest races in Burbank election history — had to jump through a number of hoops tossed up by City Hall officials — not all of them legal. Burbank resident George Marciniw and Judy Alter of  Protect California Ballots, an election watchdog group, were first told by Burbank officials that all of the fee for the recount would have to be paid up front — when the request was made. Burbank City Clerk, Margarita Campos, explained to Alter that the full fee... Read More →

Controversy over movie based on best selling book, “Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man”

Well-known comedian/radio personality Steve Harvey’s book, “Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy, And Commitment,” was a huge bestseller. The self-help guide debuted at number one on the New York Times hardcover advice list the week of February 9, 2009. The relationship book, from a male perspective, was aimed at black women, but it struck a cord with women of various ethnic backgrounds. Following in the steps of its best selling predecessor, “He’s Just Not That Into You,”... Read More →

The tax deadline and President Obama’s 2010 tax returns

The midnight deadline to file 2010 tax returns is fast approaching. Usually, the deadline for filing federal tax returns is April 15, however, this year we got a three -day-grace period. The reason: Emancipation Day fell on a Saturday, but was celebrated as a legal holiday on April 15 in Washington, D.C. Emancipation Day commemorates the day, April 16, 1862, when President Abraham Lincoln signed an order freeing the slaves in the District of Columbia — six months ahead of signing the Emancipation Proclamation — freeing slaves... Gas Scout: On the hunt for the best pump prices in Burbank

Skyrocketing gas prices are turning motorists into gas scouts — on the lookout for the lowest pump prices anytime they hit the road. If that makes some of ditch the cellphone calls and texting to pay more attention to their surroundings –that’s a huge plus! I spent $20 on gasoline last Tuesday and I got less than five gallons. I didn’t gas-up at a high end station like the Chevron at Glenoaks Boulevard and Olive Avenue, which was charging $4.23 for a gallon of self-serve regular. At the lower end a couple... Read More →
