It’s going to be a hot, sizzling July 4th holiday weekend — and I’m not talking about just the weather.  The box office is fired up. The sci-fi action sequel, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” opened yesterday with  around $37 million —  which means it’s on track to make some serious bucks over the next few days. The other major  movies opening this weekend are romantic comedies: “Larry Crowne” starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts and  “Monte Carlo”  featuring Selena Gomez.

Burbank compost classes and native nights workshop

Summer is a good time to get into the compost groove, especially when the City of Burbank is offering free classes.  Tossing things like veggie scraps, leaves, small twigs, and  fresh grass into a compost bin provides a feast for microorganisms  — which in turn create a rich soil amendment for your yard. In the compost classes you get to learn how to cut down on the smelly waste in your trash can, mulch leave clippings, details on grasscycling and other techniques, which save water, energy, and help protect the environment. Classes begin tomorrow, June 29, 6:30 p.m.... Read More →

Tips and insight from Jean Youn

The first half of the year is already over. How many of those things that you planned to do in the beginning of the year have you accomplished, which are you still working hard to achieve, and on which things have you given up? We often try to measure ourselves and our success by what we accomplish and by all the money, wealth, and pride that we try to fill our lives with. However, according to the Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi, in order to achieve success and... Read More →

Rebecca Forster's latest novel, "Beyond Malice," is a digital release only.

A Writer’s View: Am I An Author Idiot?

Am I An Author Idiot?  Working with a freelance editor I face each new project with a combination of angst and self pity, positive I will never write a decent book again much less publish one. After 23 published novels, one indie and two scripts (one in development) you’d think I’d be over all that. I’m not. Enter, my freelance editor Jenny Jensen*. I work with her because she is in my corner and because I sell more often when I do. Still, I have to wonder, why can’t I edit myself?... Read More →

Burbank Police promotes first African American officer

A history making promotion in the Burbank Police Department. Veteran  police officer, Jamal Childs, has been upped from school resources officer to detective.  This is the first time in 100 years — that’s right — that an African American cop has been promoted in the BPD. In the past, black officers were ignored or the rules of promotion changed once they were in line to move up to the next level.  For too long, police brass  and city officials made  flimsy excuses  for the discrimination and  pretended there were no qualified  black candidates.  I doubt... According to them, the image of a father changes over time as follows: 4 years old — Dad can do anything. 7 years old —Dad really knows about lots of things. 8 years old — Who is higher, my dad or my teacher? 12 years old — Dad is ignorant of a lot of things. 14 years old — My father? There is a... Read More →
