Jean Youn: Heaven on Earth

When we tell an old story, we start with the phrase, “A long, long time ago.”  But, Koreans begin like this, “A long, long time ago, during the era of the Koryo dynasty.” The current name, Korea, is derived from the Koryo, as Korea was first known to the Western world by that name. It is a story about 1,000 years old. A long time ago, during the era of the Koryo dynasty, there was a person, Inro Lee, who held a very high position at the Court, which may be equivalent... Heat wave returns to Burbank and Southland

A sizzling Sunday in the Southland and according to the forecast it’s just the first of some seriously hot days. The high is expected to reach at least 99 today in Burbank with triple digits predicted through Thursday here.   Yeah, the calendar says it’s fall — but apparently summer is still clinging to the Southland. Get out the sunglasses and the sunscreen and try to stay cool.

City Buzz: Turmoil at Burbank City Hall

I don’t know a delicate way to put this so I’ll just bottom line it and ask, “… what the blank is going on at Burbank City Hall?” Lately,  a lot of the decisions and actions by city officials have been very confusing or down right weird. Let’s start with City Manager Mike Flad. On his way out the door, Flad slammed the brakes on what appeared to be a hasty decision to search for a permanent police chief. Flad is making the dash to South Gate to fill... Read More →

Search for permanent Burbank police chief suspended

Outgoing Burbank City Manager Mike Flad has put the brakes on the search for a permanent police chief. A news release about the decision was sent out late this afternoon from Public Information Officer Drew Sugars. A lot of changes at City Hall lately and many of them strange and confusing, however, this move makes plenty of sense. Here’s the news release: City Suspends Search for Permanent Police Chief Recruitment process on hold pending the hiring of a new city manager BURBANK, Calif. (September 27, 2012) – Burbank City Manager... Read More →

Recap: 2012 Primetime Emmy Awards

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards are history. Sunday’s telecast of the ceremony was ho-hum — in fact, some of the jokes and failed gags were down right painful to watch, so the writers responsible should hope they are forgotten real quick. Favorite moments: Julianne Moore picking up best actress in a miniseries for her performance as Sarah Palin in “Game Change” and saying: “Wow. I feel so validated because Sarah Palin gave me a big thumbs down.” “Game Change” was about the 2008 Republican presidential campaign. Also,... Read More →

Photo Gallery: Endeavour flyover from Burbank Peak

Terrific photos of the historic flyovers of the the Southland by Endeavour, while perched atop a huge 747, still coming into Media City Groove. Here are some of the images captured by frequent contributor/freelance photographer, Terje “Terry” Canavarro. Terry took his camera to the top of Burbank Peak, also known as “The Wisdom Tree” to see Endeavour’s flyby. He says he in position at around 9:20 that morning and watched a steady stream of arrivals. Endeavour flyovers: My reaction and that of a 91-year-old retiree

After a grand tour of the Golden State, Endeavour is spending its first night in the Southland. Yesterday, the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft gave Endeavour a piggyback ride from Houston to Edwards Air Force Base in the high desert. Shortly after eight this morning, the modified Boeing 747 airliner took to the skies again with the proud orbiter mounted on its back. Endeavour flew over Sacramento, San Francisco and parts of the Bay Area before heading south. I knew it would fly over a number of Southland places like The Getty... Read More →

Jean Youn: Elections, politicians, and a variety of opinions

It is a so-called political season in an election year. I’m not trying to talk about the election and politics as I don’t know much about them. There is a common saying that small businesses like mine fall into a slump in an election year. Well, how could I, a simple cleaner, know why people say so? Later this year, a presidential election will be held not just in America, but also in South Korea where I used to live. Thus, news and stories about politics... Read More →

More surprises from Burbank City Hall today. City Manager, Mike Flad, is one step out the door. This is no rumor  — it ‘s the official word. Late this afternoon a news release came out announcing Flad has “tentatively accepted the position” as city manager of South Gate. You gotta  wonder about Flad’s move coming at a time when he’s handling the all-important recruitment and hiring of a permanent Burbank Police Chief. Here’s the official release from Public Information Officer, Drew Sugars.   Burbank City Manager Accepts Position with City... Read More →

Another triple digit day in Burbank!

Another scorcher in the Media City. The temperature leaped the 100 degree mark early this afternoon. At 2 p.m. it was 102!  The humidity is down — we’re back to the traditional dry heat of a Southland summer. A hot weekend is ahead for Burbank — so be sure to wear protection when you’re outside: a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

City Buzz

Long time activist and political strategist, Steve Ferguson, has kicked off his campaign for a seat on the Burbank School Board. Ferguson first announced his intentions publicly on this blog last month, following his controversial defeat for the appointment by the Burbank Board of Education to fill the remaining term of Debbie Kukta — who stepped down to take the interim position of city treasurer. That appointment went to Burbank Police Lieutenant, John Dilibert. That sparked a lot of chatter in B-town; some felt Ferguson was the best... Read More →

We need a break from the hot, humid weather in the Media City

I don’t know where this long stretch of hot and humid weather is coming from, but I sure wish it would go back. I have lost count of the number of days this miserable weather has blanketed Burbank.  Hot and dry — we’re use to that — but this sticky, stuffy air is more like the East Coast than the West Coast. The high today has topped 90 in B-town. The humidity soared to over 60% this morning — now it’s back down into the 40s.... Read More →

That’s the biggest convention audience all year and ranked as the top political... Read More →
