City Buzz: Frutos wins big in primary, run-off surprises, and ballot count debacle

Burbank voters have spoken loud and clear. What did they demand? Change on the Burbank City Council, where an entrenched council majority, led by 20-year- incumbent, Dave Golonski, is now on shaky ground. The reason, the election of Bob Frutos, who was the only candidate to win a seat on the council in Tuesday’s Primary Nominating Election. A candidate must receive 50 percent plus one of the votes in order to win the election. The three incumbents, Mayor Dave Golonski, and Councilmen Jess Talamantes and David... Read More →

If, you are fine with Burbank as is, don’t bother to... Read More →

Community input sought in search for new Burbank city manager

On her first day as the consultant hired to search for a permanent city manager for Burbank,  Bobbi Peckham got right down to business. Last Tuesday, February 19, Peckham conducted two public forums to gather input on what are the “qualities and experience” most needed for a candidate to be able to successfully handle the duties of a city manager in Burbank — a small city with “complex issues” and diverse community. Later, Peckham gave a report to the city council on the feedback collected at the forums. In a... Read More →

Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss dies

A lot of sadness in Laker land tonight, as folks come to terms with the passing, earlier today, of team owner, Dr. Jerry Buss. At the age of 80 and reportedly after a long battle with cancer, Buss died this morning at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. He was the majority owner of the Lakers and is given credit for being the architect of the basketball franchise’s showtime success. He had a Ph.D in physical chemistry and keen business sense. What does this mean for the Lakers? No  change, according to... Read More →

Deja vu! Another car crashes into the same local Starbucks

The Starbucks coffee outlet at Western Avenue and Glenoaks Boulevard in Glendale shut down unexpectedly this afternoon, after a car crashed through the storefront, despite the safety bollards installed to prevent such mishaps. It happened shortly after 1 p.m. There were no customers in the Starbucks at the time and the driver, an 86-year-old woman, was apparently not hurt. Glendale Information Officer, Sergeant Thomas Lorenz, says the driver, who does not want to be identified, refused treatment from paramedics. A tow truck operator was able to drive the battered Dodge... Read More →

What’s hot for Valentine’s Day 2013

Valentine’s Day is shaping up to be a money maker for florists if what I discovered at a couple of Burbank florists is any indicator. When I dropped by Samuel’s Florist on West Olive Avenue last Saturday, owner/floral designer, Donna Smith, was busy creating Valentine’s Day arrangements with shop floral designer, Karla Comayagua. Smith is surprised at how many customers have come in or contacted her shop early to place their Valentine’s Day orders. Smith says she noticed at Christmas there were more “people buying flowers.” Once the holidays were... Read More →

Keep a lookout for your election ballot

Burbank Primary Nominating Election ballots were delivered to the post office today and postal carriers will be dropping them in mailboxes, all across the city, over the next few days. Burbank Deputy City, Clerk Susan Domen, says there are around 60, 000 ballots — one for each registered voter in B-town. The ballot packet includes a postage prepaid return envelope. So no postage stamp is needed. The deadline to return the ballots is February 26. Hopefully, the free postage will prompt more voters to mark their ballots and mail them... Read More →

2013 Super Bowl logo

Most watched Super Bowl ever !!!

What a game! Despite that lengthy blackout in the second half , the Baltimore Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers 34-31. The Ravens had the momentum from the kick-of, but that weird power outage in the third quarter energized the 49ers — but not enough for the Niners to win it all. The early TVratings indicate the showdown in New Orleans had the biggest super bowl audiences ever, 48.1. Deadline has details on the numbers. More on the blackout on theRead More →
