Two Burbank libraries designated cooling centers during heat wave

Starting today, folks in Burbank will get some relief from the heat wave. Two of the city’s libraries will have longer hours through Sunday, providing cool places to escape hot temperatures in the 90s and even triple digits. Two designated cooling centers were announced yesterday in a news released: “Residents are encouraged to seek relief from the heat by visiting either the Buena Vista Library at 300 N. Heat is on in the Media City

  You know it’s going to be a sizzler when the temperature reaches 85 before 11 a.m. Well, that’s the case in Burbank today. A heat wave is building and it’s effecting much of the Southwest and including the Southland.  No relief is expected until sometime next week. The national weather service has issue an excessive heat warning for the San Fernando Valley. Temperatures heating up in Burbank and the rest of the Southland

  It looks like the Southland is heading into the first heat wave of the summer.  Some parts of the valley could get up into the triple digits over the next few days. Burbank is already sizzling. Today at 12:30 p.m. the high was 87 in the Media City and felt even warmer. B-town can expect highs in at least the 90s tomorrow through Monday. There will be plenty of sunshine go along with the hot temperatures. Yeah, summer is here.

Weekend box office: Monsters are beating the Zombies

  The weekend box office is all about the monsters and the zombies. The battle is between the new Disney animation, “Monsters University” and Brad Pitt’s new zombie action flick, “World War Z.” And the monsters are winning. The weekend numbers are estimates today, but “Monsters University” appears to be headed to the top spot with around $82 million verses “World War Z” debut of $66 million. James Gandolfini dies in Italy leaves behind unfinished business

The extraordinary actor who made the mobster Tony Soprano both tough and sexy, James Gandolfini, is being remembered today. Gandolfini died yesterday. He was only 51. A heart attack is suspected, but the official word will come after an autopsy. Gandolfini was reportedly on a father-son-vacation in Italy when tragedy struck. His eight grader son, Michael, reportedly found his father “collapsed” in the bathroom of a hotel. Gandolfini was pronounced dead at a hospital  in Rome a short time later. Disney expansion project clears major hurdle

Another major studio expansion project is working its way through the political process. Disney’s Golden Oak Ranch revamp was approved by the Los Angeles Regional Planning Commission yesterday. Last April, NBCUniversal got the go ahead from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for its  $1.6 billion 25-year Evolution Plan, which the studio says will generate 30,000 jobs. A new Burbank city manager selected

Burbank has a new city manager. It happened tonight during a closed door session of the Burbank City Council. Council members selected Mark Scott, presently the city manager up in Fresno. Scott reportedly has held that position since April of 2010. The announcement came in a news release from City Hall a short while ago. “Man of Steel” soars into the record books

  “Man of Steel” may not have thrilled a lot of the reviewers, but the new superhero flick is getting a lot of love from movie fans. In its debut last weekend, “Man of Steel,” shot right into the record books with the best June opening ever and the second best first weekend of 2013, right behind “Iron Man 3.” “Man of Steel” grabbed the number spot with $116.6 million from Friday to Sunday. Two more sequels for “The Amazing Spider-Man”

Sony Pictures made a big announcement  today about one of its biggest franchises, Spider-Man. Last year, “The Amazing Spider-Man” earned more than $750 million worldwide. A sequel is in  production in New York right now and is due out next May. A news release from Sony Pictures revealed the dates for two more sequels in June 2016 and May 2018. Details on Deadline.

The Burbank City Federal Credit Union provided a free lunch to hundreds of its members between 11-and 2 p.m.today. Folks lined up in front of the building to get one of those juicy In-N-Out burgers, chips, and a drink. I spoke with two members of the credit union marketing team, Eric Foster and Joanna Tomlinson, about the event. Tomlinson told me the In-N-Out truck would provide a thousand burgers.   The new Superman movie lands in U.S. theaters tomorrow and it’s the hottest ticket this weekend. “Man of Steel” advance ticket sells were soaring high — in the number one spot — as of last Tuesday at Fandango, the popular movie site on the web. Beatle song to become a children’s book

  Ex-Beatle, Ringo Starr, will soon be a published children’s author. The rocker has snagged a deal with Simon & Schuster to turn his 1968 tune, “Octopus’s Garden” into an illustrated children’s book, according to a PR Newswire release. The song appeared on the Beatles album, “Abbey Road” (1969). The way the story goes, Starr composed the song while cruising on actor, Peter Seller’s yacht.   UPDATED: Sunday, June 9, 2013 3:38 p.m.  A fifth shooting spree victim has died bringing the total to six dead. Details here.   The FBI has joined the investigation into that deadly shooting rampage in the Southland coastal community of Santa Monica yesterday. Five people were killed including the alleged gunman, who apparently died as the result of a shootout with law enforcement on the Santa Monica College campus.
