  Last Saturday actress, Melissa McCarthy, got to  throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Dodgers vs St. Louis Cardinals game at Dodger Stadium. McCarthy’s pitch was pretty good. Hobby Lobby, the craft and home decor chain, is gearing up for the big opening of its new Burbank store early next month. A new sign has been installed at the entrance to the newly paved parking lot on North Victory Boulevard. Extensive renovation of the old OSH site has been done, but work continues on the structure. IKEA Burbank hourly workers to get a raise as part of new company policy

Many of the more than 300 employees at the IKEA in Burbank will be getting a raise as part of a new company policy.Yesterday, the Swedish furniture giant announced it will adopt a new minimum hourly wage structure for its U.S. hourly retail workers. Beginning in January of next year, the minimum average hourly wage will jump 17 percent to an average of $10.76 an hour. Glendale brush fire 60% contained, firefighters getting upper hand

Firefighters are getting the upper hand today on that brush fire burning in the hills of Glendale. The fire broke out  last Sunday and has scorched around 150 acres above Brand Park. No structures or homes have been damaged. The blaze is now 60 percent contained. No word yet on the cause. There are reportedly around 200 fire personnel on the scene. Glendale brush fire 30% contained, but still a threat

A brush fire is burning for a second day in the hills above Brand Park in Glendale. The fire broke out around 12:30 p.m. yesterday and quickly grew to 150 acres. A plume of smoke and ash from that fire could be seen for miles, especially in nearby Burbank. Five hikers in the area were rescued. Three were treated for dehydration. Talk of the Town: Burbank City Council, utility rate hikes, and labor costs

The Burbank City Council will again be crunching budget numbers tonight during a special city council meeting. At the June 10 meeting, the council majority shocked the over-confident staff by not approving utility rate increases for electric, water, refuse, and sewer. The vote was 3-2 with council members Emily Gabel-Luddy and Gary Bric voting for the rate increases.  Council member Jess Talamantes, Vice-Mayor Bob Frutos and Mayor Dr. David Gordon voted against the rate hikes. A Bel Air estate once owned by old Hollywood star, Betty Grable, is up for sale. The actress known for  her “million dollar legs” moved into the estate on Stone Canyon Road shortly after it was constructed in 1937. Between 1943-1951 Grable reportedly was the highest paid Hollywood celebrity. Highs in the 80s in Burbank today, tomorrow, and through at least the beginning of the new week. Summertime weather makes the living pretty special here in Burbank and the rest of the Southland.

Burbank Police arrest arson suspect

A suspect in connection with two suspicious fires in Burbank is being held on $50,000 bail today. Earlier this week, the  fires broke out in two trash dumpsters within a block of each other. Investigations by the Burbank Fire Department and Burbank PD arson investigators concluded both appeared ” to have been intentionally set.” During the criminal investigation, an arrest warrant was obtained for 40 year-old Mohammed Bashir of Burbank. Mountain lion alert for Burbank

Burbank Police have issue an alert following two “separate mountain lion sightings” in residential areas this week. The wild cat was seen in neighborhoods near the edge of the Verdugo mountains. Burbank Police Sergeant, John Dilbert, is blaming the drought for the problem. Sgt. Restaurant Company, the parent of the Elephant Bar Global Grill/Wok Kitchen chain, reportedly filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The most popular place for lunch in the Media City today was probably the Burbank City Federal Credit Union on West Magnolia Boulevard. A large    In-N-Out truck was parked in front of the financial institution. Members were treated to a free lunch of burgers, potato chips, and drinks from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The credit union has been staging this members only event for more than 10 years.   I asked several members about their free meals. A new parking lot in Burbank’s Magnolia Park hits a snag

Construction of a new parking lot in Burbank’s Magnolia Park has hit a snag. Work crews were busy at the lot on Magnolia Boulevard, between Maple and Kenwood Streets, back in early May. In fact, the  pouring of the concrete, striping the parking spaces, and planting the landscape were expected to finish off the project by the end of the month.
