Letter to the Editor: Bob Frutos announces retirement from Burbank City Council

Thank you, Burbank! Upon careful thought and reflection, I have decided it is time for me to retire from the Burbank City Council, effective this December.  I have discussed this with my wife, Laura and please believe me, this was not easy decision. However, it is one that I make with honor, satisfaction and pride, because I know I have served our community with best interests of our residents as my only guide.  Therefore, I will not run for re-election to the Council this November.  It is time to pass... Two Burbank officials speak out about redrawing political boundaries for the city

Burbank, like every other community across the State of California, is currently taking part in the once-in-a-decade process of redrawing the political boundaries for elective offices.  Redistricting takes place after the completion of each Census.  Over the course of the next few weeks, the Citizens Redistricting Commission will complete its work and establish the Assembly, Senate, and Congressional Districts that will represent our community in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. In 2008, California voters passed Proposition 11, which created a Citizens Redistricting Commission to draw state legislative districts.  In 2010, California... Read More →

Letter to the Editor: A tribute to Mickey DePalo

A heartfelt farewell to Mickey DePalo. Burbank will miss Mickey and we will never forget him.  While change is a part of life, saying farewell isn’t easy, especially if that someone is Mickey DePalo.  Mickey is a good man;  our dear Vietnam War veteran, our hero and he is my friend.   It has been my honor to have met Mickey, he is one in a million. Mickey has served our community for many years in many capacities and is always volunteering his time in our city.  He has touched the lives of... Read More →

Letter to the Editor: Burbank update from Councilmember Nick Schultz

Just over 100 days ago, I took my oath of office and was sworn in as your City Councilmember.  While there has been much to learn in my short time on the City Council, I feel increasingly optimistic that our community is well-positioned to build back strong from this unprecedented public health and economic crisis. As a candidate, I advocated for the creation of a Burbank Economic Recovery Taskforce.  Last month, the City Council voted unanimously to re-purpose one of our existing sub-committees and create an Economic Recovery Sub-Committee comprised... A special new year message from Burbank Council member Nick Schultz

Letter to the Editor: Happy New Year Burbank!  I know it goes without saying, but 2020 was a very difficult year for our community.  However, today we have awoken to a bright new day.  A new year brings with it a fresh start and new opportunities.  While we will continue to face many of the same challenges that were before our community last year, I believe that a new year requires new priorities from our local government to address these issues.  Moreover, I am optimistic that 2021 will be a... Letter to the editor from Burbank Vice Mayor Frutos

Friends and Neighbors, We are going to get through this together.  As you may know, our City has declared a State of Local Emergency as part of a continued, proactive approach towards slowing the spread of the Novel Coronavirus. This is unknown territory that we have not experienced before.  We need to remain positive, stay healthy and check up on our neighbors to be sure they’re doing well.   That said, I understand if some residents will worry about uncertainty or feel anxious.  You are not alone.     Please know our... Candidate for State Senate District 25 Phlunte Riddle on Mother's Day

Mother’s Day: Phlunte Riddle candidate for State Senate

I wanted to take a quick break from knocking on doors to wish all the moms out there Happy Mother’s Day for tomorrow. Even after passing, my mother continues to be an inspiration to me. She had a fire for justice within her that led her to leave the South at the age of 17 and then went on to raise three daughters while working two jobs. She should be a saint because we were a handful. I still take her lessons of kindness, hard work, and helping... Read More →

Letter: Katherine Perez-Estolano for State Senate

My name is Katherine Perez-Estolano and I am running to be your next State Senator in District 25. I love California and I believe in the people who make up this great state. From a young age, my mother – a lifelong school teacher –taught me that serving our community is a responsibility we all share, a lesson that has motivated me throughout my career and inspires me to serve. The Greater San Gabriel Valley has been my home for nearly 25 years. As a parent, wife, small business owner,... Read More →

Photo: FLLewis / Media City G -- Councilman Will Rogers at Burbank City Council meeting May 19, 2015

Letter: Councilman Rogers speaks out on “Reporting Out”

When I took my seat on the Burbank City Council in May I said I wouldn’t engage in the council’s recent practice of using the “Reporting Out” period to announce events attended since the previous council session. Among other reasons, I said – and still believe – the often lengthy readings offer more benefit to the council members than to citizens waiting for the council to get down to business. The public is entitled to know what elected officials are up to in the city’s service when not at the dais. But I’m certain... Read More →
