A Strong View: Romancing the Bean

Romancing the Bean. This little place has the best coffee.  They have a large variety including specialty coffees.  Also, the quiche is delicious, the blueberry muffins are divine. Their menu is uniquely chosen with a little bit of something for ever taste. They have pressed Sammy’s, (aged white cheddar, taleggio, blue cheese, mayo on walnut raisin bread) – if you love cheese, this is for you. There is a wonderful Smoked Salmon wrap, I liked this one. Whipped light cream cheese, English cucumber, arugula, spinach . It was just enough, not... Read More →

A Strong View: A repair shop that gets two thumbs up

GUARANTEE VACUUM 1721 West Burbank Blvd. Burbank, California 91506 Phone (818) 842-0357 Guarantee Vacuum is one of those small dependable businesses that dot the landscape of Burbank. It has been operating in Burbank for almost 45 years. Chris Dansak took over from his father in 1980 and is still running the business today. As a boy, this store was a second home. On Saturdays, Chris could be found inside working alongside his father learning all about vacuums. When he became older, Chris helped deliver cleaned and repaired vacuum and ran... Read More →

A Strong View: Two citizens who take the time

Many residents in Burbank would like to participate in the inner workings of the city if they had the extra time to perhaps attend council meetings on Tuesdays. This is most often impossible for many, as the council meetings have been known to run late into the evening. Sometimes 11:00 p.m. and on occasion until 2:00 a.m. As many of these residents have families, early morning jobs or are elderly and can’t sit in one spot for hours they do not show up at city hall. This brings me to the two gentlemen... Read More →

City Life: Dealing with traffic congestion

While this post is not about Burbank per se — it touches on a problem Burbankers complain about a lot. Probably every city in California is affected by some forum of traffic congestion.  If you travel Coldwater Canyon Avenue here in the San Fernando Valley, plan on a two hour delay. The reason: construction. It seems this avenue is always under some kind of construction. I feel a lot of compassion for those motorists driving this major connection, from the Valley to... A Strong View: Bob Frutos and David Gordon the right team

A surprising 53.3% of the ballots cast in the Burbank Primary Nominating Election last month were for Bob Frutos . Never before has a newcomer won out over three incumbents in Burbank. The voters made a powerful show of support for change by casting their ballots for Bob. We need a fresh outlook and someone who will fight for the residents, help us solve our problems, and give us back our rights as citizens to have a well run city. Bob has shown his support for us and we came through for him.... Read More →

A Strong View: Stop runaway production

If you are at all familiar with the motion picture industry no doubt you know about runaway production. Entertainment is big business here in Southern California and especially in Burbank. The major and independent studios probably do their best to employ locally. Yet, here in a time of economic deficiencies in the job market; the powers that be, whoever they may be, in charge of permits and rules governing what can be done where — are running productions out of town. Many studios, because of... Read More →

A Strong View: Fighting for respect from city hall

Recently, I was listening to one of the Burbank council meetings. A gentleman speaking on behalf of his neighbors asked for help with an ongoing problem of parking on their street. Some neighbors have driveways and others do not. This dilemma has some neighbors overlapping other folks’ driveways in order to park and is causing problems for city trash pick up as well. This neighborhood is being denied respect. Safety concerns for their health and welfare are being ignored. This is very wrong. Why does this neighbor and his neighbors... Read More →

A Strong View: Why you should vote

When was the last time you voted? I know many of you have no interest in voting and haven’t done so in years. Burbank has an election on Tuesday, February 26, 2013. We (the residents) have a chance to make a difference in the inner workings of our community by voting. The positions available are city clerk, city treasurer, three city council seats and two seats on the board of education. You say who cares? Let someone else do it. If, you are fine with Burbank as is, don’t bother to... Read More →
