White House News: Michelle Obama & Stevie Wonder

Fronnie Lewis
February 28th, 2009

This is the official portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama. It was released yesterday and yes, continues to fuel the controversy over the first lady’s propensity to go sleeveless. According to the Mrs-O website, this stunning black dress is from Michael Kors’ spring 2009 collection.

In my opinion, this time Michelle scored high marks on three levels: the dress is appropriate and it showcases her personal style and personal preference. Whether you’re a fan or not, you’ve gotta admit the first lady looks sharp and confident in the portrait. And you can’t miss those toned bare arms. How long do you think it will be before the first lady gets a publishing deal to write a book about her exercise routine?

Last Wednesday night, President Obama presented legendary entertainer Stevie Wonder with the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize for Popular Song during an affair at the White House. The Gershwin prize is named for George and Ira Gershwin, the famous American song writing team of such classics as “Someone To Watch Over Me” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.” The award honors lifetime achievement in popular music.

The president and the first lady stressed the importance of Wonder’s music in their personal lives. In fact, the first couple used Wonder’s “You and I” as their wedding song. Also, President Obama noted Wonder’s universal appeal: “Millions of people around the world have found similar comfort and joy in Stevie’s music and its unique capacity to find hope in struggle and humanity in our common hardships.”

Wonder’s career has been prolific. He has released at least 35 albums, which have sold  more than 72 million copies. He has 30 top ten hits, 11 # 1 pop singles, and won 19 Grammys. Wonder is very active in political and charitable causes as well. Locally, Wonder owns urban adult contemporary radio station 102.3 KJLH.

Day 38: President Obama outlines plan to end Iraq war

Fronnie Lewis
February 27th, 2009

”Let me say this as plainly as I can: by August 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end,” that coming from President Barack Obama today during an appearance at Camp Lejeune, a Marine base in North Carolina. The President said. “We sent our troops to Iraq to do away with Saddam Hussein’s regime – and you got the job done. We kept our troops in Iraq to help establish a sovereign government – and you got the job done. And we will leave the Iraqi people with a hard-earned opportunity to live a better life – that is your achievement; that is the prospect that you have made possible.”

The president’s plan calls for 35-to-50,000 of our troops to remain in Iraq and be slowly withdrawn during a period of transition. Nevertheless, by December 31, 2011 all U.S. forces will be out of Iraq — per an agreement made by the Bush administration and the Iraqi government last year.

The president pointed out the future success of the Iraqi nation will be determined by its leaders and its people: “We will complete this transition to Iraqi responsibility, and we will bring our troops home with the honor that they have earned.”

Next month marks the sixth anniversary of the Iraq war.

The first Superman comic goes on the auction block

Fronnie Lewis
February 27th, 2009

Action Comics #1 DC Comics/ www.mikecs.net

The first superhero, Superman, was introduced in the Action Comics #1 published in 1938 for 10 cents. These days the average price of a regular comic book is around $3. One of the few remaining copies of this rare publication is up for bid at ComicConnect — an online marketing website for comic book buyers and sellers. You can get a peek inside the landmark comic on that website.

This original copy of the first Man of Steel comic went up for auction today with a minimum bid of $1.  No one expects the comic to go for chump change. According to CNN, Stephen Fishler, owner of Comic Connect, predicts it will sell for around $400 thousand.  Fishler called this comic “… the Holy Grail of comic books.” Also, included in this comic is the debut of Superman’s girlfriend Lois Lane.

Since the stock market continues to tumble, many investors are looking for other places to put their money. Comic books are becoming a hot commodity. The auction of this first Superman comic is open to the public and ends on Friday, March 13, 2009.

Michelle Obama’s bare arms controversy

Fronnie Lewis
February 26th, 2009

photo from http://www.people.com

First Lady Michelle Obama graces the cover of the People Magazine issue set for release tomorrow, Friday, February 27. It’s a lovely cover. The Michelle Obama fashion style website www.mrs-o.org says the first lady is wearing a lace kimono dress in dried azalea (love that color) by African American designer Tracy Reese. A full length view of a version of that dress is on www.mrs-o.org.

The dress looks wonderful on Michelle, however, it also highlights the latest style controversy buzzing around the first lady. The controversy is about Mrs. Obama’s apparent preference for baring her arms, no matter the occasion or season, or what the temperature gauge shows.

A post yesterday, on MSN’s allDAY Blog talked about the controversy surrounding the first lady’s right to bare her arms. There are comments from readers from across the nation on that blog. Some claim this is a “none issue,” others say go ahead bare those arms if they are shapely like Michelle’s, still others insist the first requirement is to be appropriate for the event.

Even during President Obama’s address to Congress, the first lady grabbed attention for her outfit. The www.mrs-o.org website has a post and photo of Michelle in the  sleeveless plum colored dress  she wore to hear her husband make his first speech to the joint session of Congress on Tuesday. Some felt it looked like the first lady was dressed for an after five party affair. Again, the dress showcased Michelle’s very toned arms.

Frequently women want to show off what they consider their best physical assets, whether it be long legs, buxom bosoms, or well defined arms. So Michelle has plenty of company in this thinking. However as first lady, the focus of national and world attention, Michelle has to meet a higher standard than most women. As first lady, what is appropriate always takes priority over personal style and personal preference. This is something Michelle will have to come to terms with, hopefully, sooner rather than later.

Fronnie Lewis
February 26th, 2009

Actor Samuel Jackson has signed a major multi-picture deal with Marvel films, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Jackson and Marvel reportedly have been haggling for weeks, but now it’s a done deal for the actor to play Nick Fury, a spy in the comic book agency S.H.I.E.L.D.

The deal calls for Jackson to appear as Fury in an unprecedented nine Marvel films including “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America,” and “The Avengers.” Jackson is going to be one busy actor.

Over at the Marvel.com website they’re reporting “Iron Man 2″ will be directed by Jon Favreau and filming is expected to begin this April. The cast includes Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, and Don Cheadle. Marvel is also saying Kenneth Branagh has signed on to direct “Thor,” which is scheduled to hit theaters in July of 2010.

Win a role on a popular TV show

Fronnie Lewis
February 25th, 2009

“NUMB3RS” cast/ Google Image

If you’re a fan of the popular CBS series, “NUMB3RS” or looking for that 15 minutes of fame or a jump start for an acting career, then you might want to place a bid in an auction on eBayThe Writers Guild Foundation is auctioning off a walk-on role on ”NUMB3RS.”  It’s a fundraiser for charity.

I first read about the auction over on Chad Gervich’s Script Notes blog. There are more details on his site and on eBay. Also there are some requirements, therefore, you would probably want to check those out before bidding. So far, the bidding is up to $12 hundred. Apparently, there will be more than one winner, so it might be worth a shot if you’re really interested in appearing in a non-speaking minor role on a TV show.

“NUMB3RS” is about an FBI agent who gets help solving crimes from his math genius brother. The show is in its fifth season. The auction ends on Saturday, February 28, 2009.

Three Burbank City Council seats to be decided in run-off election

Fronnie Lewis
February 25th, 2009

FLLewis/A Writer’s Groove — Burbank City Hall

Today the race for the three available seats on the Burbank City Council is a little less crowded, but there are still six candidates in the run-off. There were 13 candidates on the ballot for the primary election, held yesterday.

Mayor Dave Golonski, an incumbent who has served several terms on the city council, led the pack with 4,858 votes, according to the Burbank Leader. Next in the ballot count, incumbent Dr. David Gordon with 4,537 votes then followed by Jess Talamantes 3,951, Kimberly Jo 2,417, Elise Stearns-Niesen 2,019, and Garen Yegparian with 1, 989. In order to avoid a run-off, a candidate had to capture 50 percent of the vote and that did not happen. A total of 10, 889  ballots were returned in the city’s mail in election.

The run-off general election is April 14th. Hopefully before then, there will be opportunities for voters to hear the candidates debate the issues and problems facing Burbank.

Also, the incumbents won the other races in the primary: City Clerk Margarita Campos, City Treasurer Donna E. Anderson, and Larry Applebaum and Debbie Kukta for Burbank School Board.

President Obama speaks to Congress and the nation

Fronnie Lewis
February 25th, 2009

White House photo/ Pete Souza

President Obama’s first speech to a joint session of congress is being analysed and scrutinized today. So I’m having my say. First, I agree with a radio commentator who called last night’s address a “pep talk” to keep Americans inspired and focused on the tough job of rebuilding the nation’s economy and confidence in our financial systems.

A New York Times editorial complimented the president’s speech for being right on target: “He sounded confident — promising that the nation will rebuild and ‘emerge stronger than before’ — without minimizing the grave problems that must first be surmounted.”

Here are some highlights from President Obama’s speech.

“But while our economy may be weakened and our confidence shaken; though we are living through difficult and uncertain times, tonight I want every American to know this: We will rebuild, we will recover, and the United States of America will emerge stronger than before.”

”The fact is, our economy did not fall into decline overnight.  Nor did all of our problems begin when the housing market collapsed or the stock market sank.  We have known for decades that our survival depends on finding new sources of energy.  Yet we import more oil today than ever before.  The cost of health care eats up more and more of our savings each year, yet we keep delaying reform.  Our children will compete for jobs in a global economy that too many of our schools do not prepare them for.  And though all these challenges went unsolved, we still managed to spend more money and pile up more debt, both as individuals and through our government, than ever before.”

”So the recovery plan we passed is the first step in getting our economy back on track.  But it is just the first step.  Because even if we manage this plan flawlessly, there will be no real recovery unless we clean up the credit crisis that has severely weakened our financial system.”

”Second, we have launched a housing plan that will help responsible families facing the threat of foreclosure lower their monthly payments and re-finance their mortgages.  It’s a plan that won’t help speculators or that neighbor down the street who bought a house he could never hope to afford, but it will help millions of Americans who are struggling with declining home values – Americans who will now be able to take advantage of the lower interest rates that this plan has already helped bring about.  In fact, the average family who re-finances today can save nearly $2000 per year on their mortgage. ”

”Third, we will act with the full force of the federal government to ensure that the major banks that Americans depend on have enough confidence and enough money to lend even in more difficult times.  And when we learn that a major bank has serious problems, we will hold accountable those responsible, force the necessary adjustments, provide the support to clean up their balance sheets, and assure the continuity of a strong, viable institution that can serve our people and our economy.”

“But I also know that in a time of crisis, we cannot afford to govern out of anger, or yield to the politics of the moment.  My job – our job – is to solve the problem.  Our job is to govern with a sense of responsibility.  I will not spend a single penny for the purpose of rewarding a single Wall Street executive, but I will do whatever it takes to help the small business that can’t pay its workers or the family that has saved and still can’t get a mortgage. ”

“We are a nation that has seen promise amid peril, and claimed opportunity from ordeal.  Now we must be that nation again.  That is why, even as it cuts back on the programs we don’t need, the budget I submit will invest in the three areas that are absolutely critical to our economic future:  energy, health care, and education.”

“Those of us gathered here tonight have been called to govern in extraordinary times.  It is a tremendous burden, but also a great privilege – one that has been entrusted to few generations of Americans.  For in our hands lies the ability to shape our world for good or for ill. ”

Although his focus was on domestic problems, President Obama did make comments about international issues like the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The full text of the president’s address is on a number of major media outlets; as well as on the official White House Blog in several languages, along with video, and photos.

Screen Actors Guild rejects producers’ last, best and final offer

Fronnie Lewis
February 24th, 2009

Hollywood is once again facing a real life cliffhanger now that the Screen Actors Guild has turned down the producers’ so-called last, best and final offer. Remember a few weeks ago, the hard line negotiator in SAG  was tossed out by moderates who felt they could better work a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Well, what the moderates got was a tough lesson in how the game of negotiations is played by the producers.

In a statement on its website, the Screen Actors Guild admitted it went into last week’s talks thinking a new contract was almost a done deal. The new negotiators gave the producers what they had been asking for: “In an effort to put the town back to work, our negotiator agreed to modify the Guild’s bargaining position to bring the Guild in line with the deals made by our sister unions.”

So what did the producers’ reps do, they went for blood. The SAG negotiators got blindsided by a new proposal: “The AMPTPs last-minute, surprise demand for a new term of agreement extending to 2012 is regressive and damaging…” The producers want a three year deal, which would mean SAG’s contract would not expire at the same time as the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, the writers and directors’ guilds, thereby weakening SAG’s bargaining power.

Over on its website, the AMPTP heaped a ton of praise on its last, best and final offer: “We have kept our offer on the table – and even enhanced it – despite the historically unprecedented economic crisis that has clobbered our nation and our industry.” The AMPTP never mentioned the millions the Hollywood studios have been making at the Box Office for months.

Last Saturday, SAG’s board of directors voted overwhelmingly to reject that last, best final offer. The producers have warned the offer could be withdrawn or modified after two months. So, it appears we are back to an impasse with both sides digging in.

Condoleezza Rice gets a multi-million dollar book deal

Fronnie Lewis
February 23rd, 2009

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is probably hammering away at a computer keyboard today as part of her new job, author. Several major media outlets, yesterday and today, report Rice has signed a three book deal with Crown Publishing, a division of Random House. According to the Associated Press, the deal is worth at least $2.5 million!

The 54-year-old George W. Bush confidant will begin with a book about her White House days: “Rice will combine candid narrative and acute analysis to tell the story of her time in the White House and as America’s top diplomat, and her role in protecting American security and shaping foreign policy during the extraordinary period from 2001-2009,” according to a statement released by Crown on Sunday. That book is due out in 2011.

Rice, who grew up in the segregated South, went on to become a top official at Stanford University before joining the George W. team and eventually taking positions in the Republican President’s administration. Rice will write about that personal journey in a family memoir, which will appear as a YA book as well. Those two books are scheduled for release in 2012.

Big Oscar winners: “Slumdog,” Penn, Winslet & Ledger

Fronnie Lewis
February 23rd, 2009

Heath Ledger as the Joker wins best supporting actor Oscar.

The late Heath Ledger, a talent that left us much too soon, was honored for his incredible performance as the “Joker” in the blockbuster, “The Dark Knight, ” at the 81st Academy Awards last night in Hollywood. Ledger was found dead in his New York apartment a year ago last month. Later officials would rule his death an accidental overdose due to prescription medications. He was only 28.

Last night at the Kodak Theatre, his parents and sister went up on stage to accept Ledger’s Oscar for best supporting actor. Ledger is only the second actor to win an Academy Award posthumously. The first time occurred when Peter Finch won the best actor Oscar for his work in the 1976 drama, “Network,” shortly after his death from a heart attack.

As expected, the rags-to-riches story of an orphan who gets a shot at winning India’s version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” cleaned up with the major trophies at the Oscars. “Slumdog Millionaire” won eight Academy Awards including: best picture, best director, best adapted screenplay, and best cinematography.

However, the best actress Oscar went to Kate Winslet for “The Reader” and best actor to Sean Penn for his lead role in “Milk.” In his acceptance speech, Penn was both gracious and humble: “”I did not expect this, and I wanted to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me, often. But I am touched by the appreciation.” In keeping with the gay rights theme of the film Penn also, condemned the passage of Proposition 8, the California ban on same-sex marriage, calling for “equal rights for everyone.”

My favorite film of 2008, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” received 13 Oscar nominations, but only won three: best art direction, best achievement in makeup, and best achievement in visual effects. This is a magical film that is beautifully acted and executed. I feel it will be enjoyed by movie lovers for many years to come.

I was disappointed that Taraji P. Henson, who played Brad Pitt’s mother in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” did not win the best supporting actress Oscar. Penelope Cruz took home the statuette for her performance in the Woody Allen film, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”

A complete list of the winners and nominees can be found over at the Oscar website run by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Tyler Perry’s “Madea” kills the competition at the Box Office

Fronnie Lewis
February 22nd, 2009

Critics slammed it, but movie fans packed the theaters this weekend to see, “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail.”  The new over-the-top comedy racked up a huge $41 million to easily become the number one film in the country.

Variety reports that this is the seventh Perry film distributed by Lionsgate. So far those films have grossed $300 million at the domestic Box Office. Perry is a writer/producer/director/actor.

The sight of Perry in drag as the aggressive mouthy grandmother, Madea, is enough to make some of us  cringe. However, Perry’s fan base has supported the Madea franchise on stage and now on the Big Screen. The first movie in the series, “Madea’s Family Reunion,” was released in 2006 and it has made over $60 million. The second Madea movie is likely to surpass the first film’s gross in a month!

In second place this weekend, the action/thriller “Taken” with around $11.4 million, followed closely in third by the animated family flick “Coraline” with about $11 million. The romantic comedy “He’s Just Not That Into You,” landed in third with $8.5 million and rounding out the top five, the Oscar favorite, “Slumdog Millionaire,” with $8 million.

Rihanna finally speaks out after alleged assault

Fronnie Lewis
February 21st, 2009

Pop star/model and suspected domestic violence victim, Rihanna, is speaking out. Rihanna’s P.R. firm released a statement yesterday. It was the first from Rihanna and her representatives since the February 8th street fight incident in Los Angeles.

A story on the People website includes part of the statement: “At the request of the authorities, Rihanna is not commenting about the incident involving Chris Brown,” says the statement from her rep on Friday. “She wants to assure her fans that she remains strong, is doing well, and deeply appreciates the outpouring of support she has received during this difficult time.”

An apparent photo of battered Rihanna surfaced on the Internet Thursday. It makes you wonder what’s taking the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office so long to complete its investigation on whether to file some tough charges against Chris Brown.

Brown’s case is due to go to court on March 5th.

Election Tuesday: Hot race for Burbank City Council

Fronnie Lewis
February 21st, 2009

FLLewis/A Writer’s Groove — Burbank City Council candidate, Lee Dunayer, smiles and chats with folks at a campaign meet and greet on January 29, 2009, at the popular Porto’s Bakery & Cafe on West Magnolia Blvd.

You can tell there’s a city primary election coming up by just driving or walking through the neighborhoods of Burbank. Candidate signs dot the landscape and the windows of businesses, too. Most of those candidates are running for three seats on the Burbank City Council.

The race for Burbank City Council is crowded with 13 candidates: Angela Nakashyan, Human Relations Manager Jess Talamantes, Financial Advisor Lee Dunayer, Litigation Consultant Barbara Sharp, Incumbent/Optometrist Dr. David Gordon, USMC Private Jeffrey W. Prutz, Educator Elise Stearns-Niesen, Associate CIO Kimberly Jo, Planning Consultant Greg Jackson, Advertising Executive Dan Humfreville, Student Trustee Steven Ferguson, Technical Research Analyst Garen Yegparian, and Burbank City Councilmember Dave Golonski.

Burbank, a city of about 100,000 residents, is home to tons of entertainment companies; from small operations to corporate giants like Disney and Warner Bros. On a normal weekday, the population doubles. This means Burbank has some unique problems and situations. The five members on the Burbank City Council hold powerful positions, which require the ability to balance the needs of residents as well as businesses. These are tough economic times for all cities including Burbank. Voters should select lead councilmembers who are not limited by what worked in the past, but are willing to bring in fresh ideas to handle today’s problems and prepare the city for the future.

The other major race on the February 24th ballot is for two seats on the Burbank Board of Education. The contenders are Broadcast Services Manager Gregory Bragg and Incumbents Debbie Kukta and Larry Applebaum.

This is a mail your ballot in municipal election, however, there are drop off points. On Monday ballots will be collected at the City Clerk’s Office in City Hall, the Buena Vista Branch Library, Joslyn Center, McCambridge Recreation Center, and Tuttle Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m and Tuesday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.. For more information contact the City Clerk’s Office at (818) 238-5851.

Schwarzenegger, the new state budget, and Hollywood

Fronnie Lewis
February 21st, 2009

photo from http://gov.ca.gov/  02/20/09  — Governor Schwarzenegger holds news conference yesterday to sign the new state budget into law.

After a painful three months of bitter debate, the state legislature finally approved a budget on Thursday and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed it into law yesterday. The budget reportedly solves a $42 billion deficit by raising taxes and cutting spending.

The governor says the budget lays the foundation for fiscal responsibility in the future:“During a down economy and facing an historic budget deficit we had to make some very difficult decisions, but I am very proud that California is back on the best path forward. We will continue to work with our most important partners – the people of our great state – to ensure we never again face the kind of catastrophic budget scenario we experienced this year.” Still, many  Republicans are not happy with Schwarzenegger’s decision to support raising taxes even in the face of a financial crisis.

Wally Skalij/Los Angeles Times

Although the governor is taking a lot of the credit, I will give some high-fives and kudos to State Senator Abel Maldonado (R-Santa Maria). Maldonado broke the budget impasse early Thursday morning by voting  “yes” on the budget.

Democrats needed one more Republican ”yes” vote and Maldonado provided it. Rather than holding fast to the rigid, infexible, Republican mantra of “no tax hikes no matter what,” Maldonado did what was best for the people of California. He helped get us out of the budget mess/financial meltdown. Voters in the state should reward Maldonado with their support.

In exchange for his vote, Maldonado insisted a change be made in the state constitution to allow for open primaries, which I’m all for. Let the voters make an unrestricted choice in the primary just like in the general election. It would sure make the ballots, which have been a major headache during state primaries,  easier to understand for both voters and poll workers.

Meanwhile, many folks in Hollywood are pleased that the new state budget includes a $100 million film and television tax incentive to put the brakes on runaway production. On the Screen Actors Guild website there is a joint statement from SAG, Directors Guild of America (DGA), American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), Motion Picture Association of American (MPAA) praising the decision: “For the past 10 years, a united entertainment community has been telling state officials that our industry is threatened by runaway film and television production.  Film and television productions have been leaving California for tax incentives in other states and countries for years now, and like everybody else, entertainment industry workers are suffering in this economic climate.  We applaud the passage of this incentive which will help make California competitive and not only save the jobs that are being lost but generate much needed revenue for the state.”

Now, if the producers and the Screen Actors Guild can settle their nasty contract dispute, Hollywood can really get back to the business of creating entertainment for the masses.

LAPD reacts to photo of a battered Rihanna

Pop star/model Rihanna remains in seclusion, but a photo allegedly showing her battered face is all over the Internet today. The photo first appeared on the celebrity gossip website TMZ last night. Newsradio KNX 1070  has the photo on its site. Ironically, today is Rihanna’s 21st birthday.

Last night, the LAPD put up a statement questioning the source of the photo on its website: ” The unauthorized release of a domestic violence photograph immediately generated an internal investigation. At about 7 p.m. on February 19, 2009, the Los Angeles Police Department Media Relations Section began receiving numerous inquiries about the release of a photograph associated with a domestic violence incident that occurred on February 8, 2009, involving entertainer Chris Brown.  The photograph appeared on an entertainment website.  The photograph has the appearance of one taken during an official Domestic Violence investigation.

The Los Angeles Police Department takes seriously its duty to maintain the confidentiality of victims of domestic violence.

The Department launched an immediate internal investigation and subsequently filed a personnel complaint.

A violation of this type is considered serious misconduct, with penalties up to and including termination.

Anyone with information concerning the unauthorized release of the photograph is asked to call, during regular business hours, 213-485-4152.  After-hours or on weekends, calls may be directed to our 24-hour, toll-free number at 1-877-LAPD-24-7 (527-3247).  Callers may also text “CRIMES” with a cell phone or log on to www.lapdonline.org and click on Web Tips.  When using a cell phone, all messages should begin with “LAPD.”  Tipsters may remain anonymous.”

That alleged domestic violence incident occurred after a pre-Grammy affair on a street in Los Angeles. Pop singer Chris Brown and a woman got into an argument, which apparently turned violent. By the time the police arrived only the woman was still at the scene. The police have refused to identify the woman, but some media sources claim it was Brown’s long time girlfriend, Rihanna.

Brown released his own statement on Sunday, February 15, saying he was “sorry and saddened” by the incident. Brown was booked by the LAPD for making criminal threats and is free on $50,000 bond. His case is due to go to court on March 5.

The day after release, new Spidey-Obama comic still in demand

FLLewis/A Writer’s Groove — House of Secrets in Burbank

The day after the release of the fifth edition of the Amazing Spider-Man #583 featuring President Barack Obama, it’s still very much in demand. Over the past few days, a lot of folks have been calling House of Secrets on West Olive Avenue in Burbank searching for the comic. New issues usually appear in comic book shops on Wednesday.

Yesterday, House of Secrets got some of its order, but not the fifth edition Spidey-Obama comics. When I was in the shop on Wednesday, manager Erik Warfield was fielding calls asking about the popular issue. Warfield told me the Spidey-Obama issues could arrive by UPS later, well they did, today in fact.

Warfield says they got 150 issues of the fifth edition of the Spidey-Obama comics. First, Warfield filled some pre-orders. A hundred of those comics went to the Skirball Cultural Center on North Sepulveda Boulevard in Los Angeles. Today a special exhibit, “Zap! Pow! Bam! The Superhero: The Golden Age of Comic Books, 1938-1950” opened at the Skirball Cultural Center. The comic book exhibit runs through August 9, 2009.

By the time I spoke with Warfield around 4 :30 p.m. this afternoon, he had only “30 or so” of the fifth edition Spidey-Obama comics left. If this fifth edition is a hot seller at other shops and websites, then Marvel Comics will probably come up with another interesting way to team-up the president and the web slinging superhero.

Hot Spidey-Obama comic fifth edition released today

Fronnie Lewis
February 18th, 2009

President Barack Obama is not only making news on the economic front, but in the comic book world as well. Today Marvel Comics  released a fifth edition of its now famous Amazing Spider-Man # 583 featuring President Obama: “After numerous sold out printings, Marvel is going back to press with a record fifth printing arriving in stores February 18. Now’s your chance to experience the story uniting President Barack Obama with the character that, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he named his favorite super hero!”

The first Spidey-Obama comic hit stores on January 14, 2009. Even when the original price of $3.99 jumped to $40 in some places, the issue sold out in a flash! Marvel quickly went back to press for a second, third, fourth, and now a fifth edition with the Lincoln Memorial on the cover.

I dropped by the House of Secrets on Olive Avenue In Burbank around 11:30 this morning hoping to pick up a copy of the new Spidey-Obama comic. Well, I got disappointed like many others who called or came into this comic book shop today. New comics are released on Wednesdays, but House of Secrets Manager Erik Warfield says for some unknown reason their order of the new Spidey-Obama comic did not come in.

So I took a drive to Legacy Comics and Cards on Wilson Avenue in Glendale and got lucky. Legacy had the new fifth edition of the Spidey-Obama comic, along with copies of the second, third, and fourth editions. The price was $3.99 each, except for the second edition, which was $9.99.  Assistant Manager Aaron Eaton says the second edition cost more because its yellow background has attracted a lot of interest from collectors.

The Spidey-Obama comics are on sale at speciality & novelty shops, as well as online at websites including  Amazon.

Day 28: President Obama signs $787 billion stimulus bill into law

Fronnie Lewis
February 17th, 2009

It’s a done deal. Less than a month into his new administration, President Barack Obama signed that massive and much fought-over $787 billion economic stimulus bill in Denver, Colorado today. President Obama reportedly used as many as 10 different pens to sign the measure.

Earlier, the media event was on the verge of becoming bogged down in speeches, when President Obama finally stepped to the mike. Perhaps, the White House should have stuck with a reported original plan of having the president sign the bill yesterday, Presidents Day; and then go on the road today and the rest of the week promoting it in various cities across the nation.

President Obama says the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is the most sweeping piece of legislation of its kind in our history: “What makes this recovery plan so important is not just that it will create or save 3½ million jobs over the next two years, including nearly 60,000 in Colorado. It’s that we are putting Americans to work doing the work that America needs done in critical areas that have been neglected for too long, work that will bring real and lasting change for generations to come.”

Again, the president spoke about the accountability of the bill: “With a recovery package of this scale comes a responsibility to assure every taxpayer that we are being careful with the money they work so hard to earn. That’s why I am assigning a team of managers to ensure that the precious dollars we have invested are being spent wisely and well. We will hold the governors and local officials who receive money to the same high standards. And we expect you, the American people, to hold us accountable for the results. That is why we have created Recovery.gov, so every American can go online and see how their money is being spent.”

That website is up and running today.
