Photo Gallery: New Commemorative U.S. Postage Stamp

Fronnie Lewis
August 13th, 2010

Photo: PR Newswire/U.S. Postal Service -- "Boys in a Pasture" by American Painter Winslow Homer now appears on a U.S. stamp

The 9th stamp in the American Treasures series was released yesterday, and it featured a classic work by renowned American Painter, Winslow Homer. The new 44-cent stamp pays tribute to Homer by displaying his “Boys in a Pasture,” an oil-on-canvas painting completed in 1874.

In a PR Newswire press release, U.S. Postal Service Spokesman, Ross Philo, said Homer is very deserving of the honor: ”Indeed, it’s been said that Winslow Homer did for the United States what the French Impressionists did for Europe. He showed the beauty of a place and the people who lived there. His body of work continues to shine as a legacy to our great and beautiful nation.”

Twice before,  in 1962 and 1998, paintings by Homer were showcased on U.S. stamps.

Mega Millions jackpot hovering at $75 million

Fronnie Lewis
August 11th, 2010

That Mega Millions jackpot is still up for grabs for a lucky player or players with the winning numbers. No one picked the correct digits in yesterday’s Mega Millions draw so the jackpot took a tumble and now stands at $75 million. Yesterday’s numbers: 2, 14, 26, 50, 56 and Mega Ball 12.

The next drawing is Friday, August 13. Hmm, usually retailers do a bang-up business in lottery ticket sales on the day of the drawing when the jackpot gets this hefty. Not that I’m giving credence to that old superstition about Friday the 13th being unlucky — but , ah tomorrow, Thursday, might be a better day to purchase a Mega Millions ticket.

Fronnie Lewis
August 10th, 2010

“Show Me the Polyester”

If you look great in polyester and dig rock singer/songwriter, Jackson Browne, here’s a contest for you. Browne is touring the U.S. right now with musician David Lindley. Apparently, Browne and Lindley are sporting flashy polyester shirts on stage during their performances this summer.

The duo is encouraging fans to show-off their best eye-catching polyester shirts in a photo contest going on at the “Show Me the Polyester” website, according to a PR Newswire press release. Fans have until August 25 to upload photos of themselves wearing  polyester shirts to the site. One winner will get a travel package to New York City and two-front row seats for the duo’s Beacon Theatre concert on September 14, 2010.

The latest release from  Browne and Lindley is “Love is Strange,” a 2-CD set of a tour they did in Spain back in 2006.

Profits soar for Disney, the other big studios, and the networks

Photo: FLLewis/Media City G — Disney Studios in Burbank

The money is rolling in for Disney, which this afternoon reported third quarter profits leaped 40%. Disney is not the only entertainment giant enjoying a good year. Despite the bad economy, other studios and the networks are doing well, too. Nikki Finke over at Deadline.com asks why so many folks in the entertain biz are out of work with this kind of upbeat financial picture in Hollywood? Check out Finke’s post here.

“The Other Guys” shoot to the top of the Box Office

The action-comedy, “The Other Guys,” won the weekend domestic Box Office and is continuing to rake in the dough at theaters.  “The Other Guys” debuted with $35.5 million to become the number one film in the country. On Monday, the teaming of Will  Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as wantabe- hero  New York City detectives earned nearly $5 million more at theaters.

After three weeks at in the top spot, the dreamscape sci-fi flick, “Inception,” dropped to second collecting $18.5 million– bringing its four-week domestic total to around $227 million. The new dance movie, “Step Up 3D” boogied into third place with $15.8 million. Adam Sevani and Alyson Stoner star in this third installment of the Step Up trilogy, where the battle of the dance moves to the college arena.

Rounding out the top five, the spy thriller “Salt” with $10.9 million and the comedy, “Dinner for Schmucks” with $10.3 million.

Mega Millions jackpot climbs to $53 million

Fronnie Lewis
August 4th, 2010

More greenbacks got stuffed into the Mega Millions jackpot, after no one matched all of the winning numbers in Tuesday’s drawing.  The lucky numbers were 4, 13, 20, 22, 56, and the Mega Ball 32. However, there’s still a ticket from last night’s game that’s got a lot of dollar signs hanging on it.

One ticket sold at the Lorena Market, 3360 East Olympic Boulevard in Los Angeles, matched all but the Mega Ball. That ticket is worth $197, 117. Meanwhile, the jackpot has grown to $53 million. The next drawing is this Friday, August 6, at 8 p.m.

Fronnie Lewis
August 2nd, 2010

Another Hollywood celebrity faced a judge in court, today.  Actor Charlie Sheen pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault in a deal that resulted in more serious charges being dropped. Sheen got a break from the Aspen, Colorado judge who suspended a 30-day jail sentence as well.

The assault charge came out of a nasty Christmas Day altercation Sheen had with his wife, Brook Mueller. Also, Sheen was sentenced to 30-days in rehab, but he may not have to do that time either. The Wrap has more on Sheen’s day in court.

Meanwhile, Actress Lindsay Lohan began a 90-day rehab at UCLA Medical Center today. Lohan finished 13 days of a 90 day jail sentence and was immediately carted off to the medical center. Mega Millions jackpot at $42 million plus two local players win big

Fronnie Lewis
August 1st, 2010

The Mega Millions jackpot is bulging with dough once again. No one picked all of the winning numbers for last Friday’s game. The numbers were: 11, 30, 40, 48, 52, and the Mega Ball 42. In California, one Mega Millions’ ticket, bought for that game, had every number except the Mega Ball — it’s worth $182, 348.  The jackpot is at least $42 million  for the Tuesday, August 3, drawing.

Meanwhile, that $64 million jackpot  I blogged about last month has been claimed by two Southern California telephone company workers. Zahra Vasseghi of Agoura Hills and Thu Thao Truong of El Monte have been playing both the Mega Millions and SuperLotto Plus together for the past six months. On July 16, they hit the jackpot by matching all six of the winning numbers in the Mega Millions draw.

They intend to keep working for now and help their families as well as donate to charity. Oh, and they’re also going to Vegas and plan “.. to go to the Bellagio and get a suite!” … according to the Mega Millions website.

By the way, they chose the cash option, which means their ticket is worth $41.7 million.  The lucky ticket was purchased at the Smoke N’ Stuff at 750 West 7th Street in Los Angeles. The owner of that business received $320,000 for selling the winning ticket.

Burbank & the Bell salary flap

Photo: FLLewis/Media City G -- Burbank City Council members (left-right) Jess Talamantes, David Gordon, Gary Bric, Dave Golanski, and Mayor Anja Reinke. Council members posed for pictures after voting in Reinke as mayor on May 3, 2010

Here ‘s a sad, but true tale of two Southland cities where the pay of  selected officials/employees has been jacked up to ridiculous levels.  The Los Angeles Times outed the  small community of Bell recently for paying exorbitant salaries to a handful of its city officials. Nearly $800,000 to the Bell City Manager, $457,000 to the Police Chief, and $376, 288 to the Assistant City Manager. Oh, and most of the Bell City Council members were banking a $100,000 a year.

The Times’ investigation produced a series of stories and columns, sparking outrage among Bell citizens.  That outrage prompted  the city manager, assistant city manager, and police chief to resign. And grudgingly, the Bell City Council members gave-up their six-figure salaries.

The Bell flap has focused national attention on the problems created by city officials who shell-out hefty salaries and raises to some ”allegedly-more-valuable- than -the-rest” employees to the detriment of the communities they’re supposed to serve.

Here in Media City, many residents are ticked off at the Burbank City Council for recently voting to hike the salaries of the senior executives at the Burbank Water And Power an estimated 7-to-11 percent. Thanks to the generosity of the city council, Burbank Water And Power General Manager Ron Davis’ salary reportedly will take a huge leap from around $218,000 a year, to somewhere between $233-and-$270-thousand per year. Nice gift. I blogged about it in a City Buzz column back on July 7.

It happened days after the city council approved a budget with fee increases that included a 13 .5% hike in water rates and 2.9% for electrical. Apparently, the four city council members, Jess Talamantes, Dave Golonski, Gary Bric, and Mayor Anja Reinke, who voted for the raises, came down with Bell fever. Council member David Gordon, who did not show signs of the political ailment, voted against the  BWP pay hikes and those proposed by staff at last Tuesday’s city council meeting as well.

On July 27, city staff presented new requests to the city council for some job re-classifications and pay hikes in the Park, Recreation, and Community Services Department as well as a 19 and ½ percent raise and new title for a graphic illustrator in the Community Development Department.

This time around, Councilman Golanski refused to support that 19 and ½ percent raise, but three other council members voted for that salary increase and the others as well. So all of those salary hikes passed. Dr. Gordon voted “no” on all the raises. Reinke, Talamantes, and Bric voted “yes” on all of the raises.

I find it distrubing that the city council is handing out fat raises to some city employees — while members of the Burbank PD work without a contract. The BPD has been hit hard by scandal, corruption, and mismanagement. Still, Burbank cops are out there on the streets putting their lives on the line to protect the city and its citizens. You’d think the city council members and top staff would be scrambling to get raises and a contract for Burbank cops. Now, that would benefit the entire community — not just line the pockets of a few select employees with more taxpayer dollars

Bell fever. I wonder how long certain Burbank City Council members will be afflicted with the malady. Somebody needs to find a cure fast!

Politically Speaking

Photo by Milton Alvarez-Ramos -- Steve Ferguson, Chair of the Park, Recreation, and Community Services Board in Burbank

Steve Ferguson, Chair of the Park, Recreation and Community Services Board in Burbank, has a new blog, Politically Speaking. Ferguson has posted a thought-provoking piece called, “The Unspoken Conflict.”

Ferguson writes: “Police lawsuits, cut-throat political tactics and gossip have created an environment of fear, paranoia, and desperation. It’s not okay to disagree, to want to know more, or even to read a blog or two in our City. As a result, the dominant culture of our community divides those who are involved, based on their current views of City policies, into three groups: those who are right, those who are wrong and those who are not involved or don’t have a clue. There is no longer any appreciation for a difference of opinion. The division is everywhere. When two individuals from different groups interact it is mostly unspoken and sometimes even eerily cordial.” Read the entire post here.

Update on San Fernando Boulevard Fire

Photo: FLLewis/Media City G -- Smoke billows from a huge commercial building fire on San Fernando Boulevard near downtown in Burbank on Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Fire officials are still investigating that major fire at a commercial building in the 500 block of  San Fernando Boulevard near downtown in Burbank, last Tuesday, July 27.  The fire broke out shortly before 7 p.m. and burned hot and fast. Smoke from the blaze billowed out into the neighborhood and could be seen for miles.

There were no injuries, but on Friday,  Burbank Fire Spokesman, Captain Ron Bell,  put the damage estimate to the gutted building at $1 and ½ million and damage to the contents at around $250,000.

Captain Bell says they don’t know yet exactly what caused the fire and it is still “… under investigation and will be so for some time.”

Gripes & Complaints

Some sharp criticism of the Burbank Adult School over on the Semichorus blog. The educational facility is accused of charging for some courses that reportedly should be free to students.  Details here.
