Burbank banner debate

The colorful street light banners in Burbank got slammed in yesterday’s Burbank Leader newspaper and on its website by columnist Richard Tafilaw who called them, “lame-o.”  I disagree big time for a few reasons. The banners are high above the street and not a real distraction for either motorists or pedestrians.

The banners contribute a nice festive touch to streets and boulevards.

Some of the banners carry messages like “Better than ever” and ”Cooler than ever.” Sure it’s promotion, but it’s done simply and tastefully. These banners have received praise from some of the merchants who own businesses on the streets and boulevards where they’re installed.

I have seen these banners in various sections of our Media City and find them to be a pleasant addition. So the banners get a thumbs-up from me.

    Miss Fronnie,
IF the messages were TRUE, there would still be the question of whether they are in fact “Government sanctioned Billboards”.
“Come out and play”, is a real “play” on words–isn’t it?

  2. Fronnie Says:

    Dixie,

Recently, I was told by a member of the Burbank Boulevard Merchants Association that the light pole banners were put up by the city (which has been my understanding as well). He is thrilled with the banners.

Frankly, I have not heard much grumbling about the banners. I would think if merchants and business owners were not in favor of them, we would have heard a lot of complaining by now.

  3. Ryan Says:

Most of the time the truth bites and here is a good example. Great, Burbank Blvd merchants like the banners. I bet they like the repaved street they got to. So why is it that they got a repaved street and banners while many other streets in Burbank are filled with pot holes ?
Cut the banners and put that money into fixing all the streets. Or maybe the idea is if your looking at the festive banners you might not notice the pot holes everyplace. Thumbs down to the banners from me.

  4. Fronnie Says:

    Ryan,

I think we’re talking about two difference city budgets here. I believe the banners are part of specific redevelopment projects. The street maintenance and repair —that’s something the city should have been doing regularly all over town.

Yeah, I agree with about the potholes and weather battered streets. In my opinion, City Officials have spend way too much on high-priced lawyers and not enough on city streets and roads.

  5. DixieFlyer Says:

Here we go. That is NOT a Redevelopment Area.

  6. Fronnie Says:

    Dixie,

Wait–wait. Hold your guns. My mistake. Revitalization projects not redevelopment.

  7. Ryan Says:

hold your guns I think it’s business improvement districts and that’s a complete failure. Take a look at it this way they have been business improvement districts for a while. That means taxes paid and money spent and even in good times they didn’t thrive.

Fix the streets! And stop wraping banners around poles people!

  8. Steve Says:

I agree with Dixie Flyer. There is nothing cool about that area so why say more cool than ever ? It’s false advertising if you ask me. Boo to the banners.

  9. Steve Says:

They could play IMMA BE and have dancers instead of the banners, that would be an improvement.

  10. ECIO Says:

What aren’t you fools going to complain about? You always bitch and complain about something. f its so horrible then just leave. I was born and raised here. Burbank is unique and always been ever changing. There are a hell of a lot of things I dont like but I dont bitch about every little single thing. So continue your crying!

  11. Ryan Says:

Hey ecio so long as they tax us to pay for what they want we get the right to complain. When your council bud’s start spending their own money I won’t say a word but when it’s my money I will say what I think and sorry bud I don’t want to pay for banners.

  12. ECIO Says:

Well, get your facts straight before you start shooting your mouth off. I do not support any of the council members and i havent for a while. Judging from what i heard from you, you would probably complain just to complain.

  13. Ryan Says:

    Nice try ecio.

Reading on this blog you complain about everything Obama does. Your complaints are never about how he spends your money, they are about more personal things he does. The guy has a right to have a life!

My complaints are about how my money is spent. I don’t appreciate being taxed to pay for banners that sway in the wind.

When it comes to my money I will exert my right to express my opinion on how it is wasted. Driving down streets that need repair while I look at banners doesn’t cut it. I repeat my original statement FIX THE STREETS!

  14. ECIO Says:

Absolutely, I will complain about Obama. He hasn’t done a damn thing, he is like a bunch of you. All talk and no action. Keep up the good work, Cryin’ Ryan.

  15. Fronnie Says:

    ECIO,

Ryan and others have a right to complain about Burbank — just as you have a right to complain about President Obama. A right you have exercised here, on this blog, frequently.

    Ryan,

I agree with you, money needs to be spent to fix our battered Burbank streets, pronto!

  16. Ryan Says:

If I had to weigh what the Burbank City Council has done against what Obama has done Obama wins hands down.

The Burbak City Council gets the talking about toilets award for 2010. Maybe they can spend more time on the toilets and pick what color our toilets should be. They can do that right after they pick moe beautiful banners to hang over cracked up streets full of pot holes.

  17. DixieFlyer Says:

How could we ever imagine ANY group could talk about toilets that long??
They should have shown a repeat of Mike Nolan explaining how the sewer backed-up in that poor couple’s yard!!!

  18. Ryan Says:

Oh, what is the deal really with the sewer flooding that ladies yard anyway? People talk about that every week so why doesn’t the city pay to clean it up? I laughed so hard when Nolan held up that pipe and told the mayor he could see him through it lol like mayor in a pipe.

Toilet style and color and all that is really none of their business anyway. They spend all this time on this stuff and they don’t clean up the sewer mess in peoples yards or fix the cracks and holes in the streets. What’s next ? More banners in pretty colors or maybe they can pick the colors of our cars next ?
