Medal of Honor awarded to a brave soldier

A rare ceremony at the White house today. President Barack Obama presented U.S. Army Staff Sergeant, Salvatore Giunta, with the nation’s highest military award — the Medal of Honor.  Sgt. Giunta is the first living service member from either the Iraq or Afghanistan wars to receive this award.

The Medal of Honor is awarded for “conspicuous gallantry” way beyond the call of duty. Sgt. Giunta doesn’t think he did anything special. President Obama says Giunta comrades’ report of his heroism tell a different story.

President Obama:

“Staff Sergeant Giunta, repeatedly and without hesitation, you charged forward through extreme enemy fire, embodying the warrior ethos that says, “I will never leave a fallen comrade.” Your actions disrupted a devastating ambush before it could claim more lives. Your courage prevented the capture of an American soldier and brought that soldier back to his family. You may believe that you don’t deserve this honor, but it was your fellow soldiers who recommended you for it. In fact, your commander specifically said in his recommendation that you lived up to the standards of the most decorated American soldier of World War II, Audie Murphy, who famously repelled an overwhelming enemy attack by himself for one simple reason: ‘ They were killing my friends.’ ”

President Obama remarks, including some of the harrowing details of Sgt. Guinta’s actions on October 25, 2007, and more on the White House Blog.

An emotional and awe-inspiring ceremony at the White House yesterday. In the Oval Office, President Barack Obama signed legislation granting a collective Congressional Gold Medal to the 100th Infantry Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team,  for their dedicated service during World War II.

Many of those veterans are second generation Japanese Americans. Some of them were confined in internment camps before joining the military. The 442nd Regimental Team is one of the most decorated units in U.S. military history, among the awards: 21 Medals of Honor, 4,000 Bronze stars, and over 4,000 Purple Hearts.

Several Southlanders, including World War II veteran, Osamu “Sam” Fujikawa, attended the White House affair.  More on the ceremony and the bravery of the soldiers in those units on the White House blog here.

 Hot Hollywood Movie Deal

book cover Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter

I thought it was a bizarre combination when the novel came out last spring: President Abraham Lincoln and vampires. No matter. Hollywood is hot to take this property to the big screen. Several studios were bidding on the project, but over the weekend, 20th Century Fox came out the victor, according to Nikki Finke & Mike Fleming over at Deadline.com.

Los Angeles Author Seth Grahame-Smith’s novel, “Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter” has our 14th President taking out the blood suckers and their slave-owning allies, in revenge for a vampire killing his mother. Oh, it’s going to be made in 3D. Wow! More on the deal at Deadline.com

WGA announces awards for New Media writing

photo of person writing on a computer kepyboard

The Writers Guild of America awards ceremony next February will include two new categories: Writing Original New Media and Writing Derivative New Media.  WGA-West President John Wells explained the need for the additions in a news release: ““New media writers play an essential role in entertaining, educating, and engaging audiences in the digital arena. These new awards pay tribute to their talents and to the diversity of work being done under Writers Guild contracts.”

The WGA will be accepting submissions through November 23, 2010. Details on eligibility and the new awards on the WGA -West website.

More on the Facebook movie

“The Social Network,” the new movie about Facebook, is the number one flick in the nation. Also, now there’s growing Oscar buzz surrounding the movie. Deadline has that as well as a tidbit about how the screenwriter of the film, Aaron Sorkin, collected a cool $3 million for his work. Who says screenwriting doesn’t pay the bills?

Catching up on …

Some good obits and remembrances of some recently departed celebs over on the  Los Angeles Times website – among them, Actor/Artist Tony Curtis and  TV Producer/Author Stephen J. Cannell.  Cannell was not only a great talent, but a generous writer who was willing to share his knowledge and experiences with other scribes.  I heard Cannell speak to writers’ groups a couple of times — and each time he was terrific.

Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger’s incredible story is going to be a movie. Captain Sully became a hero on January 15, 2009, when he landed a crippled U.S. Airways jetliner, like a glider, on the Hudson River saving the crew and 155 passengers on board.

Captain Sully was the Grand Marshal of the 2010 Tournament of Roses Parade. Also, he wrote his memoir, “Highest Duty: My Search For What Really Matters,” with Jeffrey Zaslow. Hollywood Producers, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall  have teamed up with Flashlight Films to option the memoir and develop it into a movie. More details on The Wrap.

Actor Gene Hackman’s new book

Gene Hackman is going solo for his new novel. The actor has signed a deal with Pocket Books for a western set in 19th century New Mexico, according to GalleyCat. He’s co-authored three other westerns.

Hackman has appeared in nearly 100 films. He won the Best Actor Oscar for the “French Connection” (1971) and Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in “Unforgiven” (1992). Hackman is such a good character actor that it’s said he’s worth watching even in a bad movie.

Hackman  new western, “Jubal’s Bounty,” is due out next July.

Comcast’s Steve Burke replacing Zucker

It didn’t take long for NBC Universal President Jeff Zucker’s replacement to be announced.  No surprise, one of the key players in the Comcast/ NBC Universal deal, Steve Burke, is taking over Zucker’s job. Burke is Comcast’s chief operating officer. Interesting these changes are happening before the Comcast/NBC Universal deal gets final approval from the Feds. Read more on The Wrap.

Reggie Bush and that tarnished Heisman Trophy

Fronnie Lewis
September 15th, 2010

Photo credit: Sports.spreadit.org --Reggie Bush's 2005 Heisman Trophy

Photo credit: Sports.spreadit.org --Reggie Bush's 2005 Heisman Trophy

A lot of chatter on the Internet and in the media about New Orleans Saints Running Back Reggie Bush’s decision to forfeit his 2005 Heisman Trophy. This is a big deal, not just for USC and  Southland football fans. The former USC tailback is the first player to give up the Heisman in its 75 year history. The award is considered one of the top honors in sports.

What happened? In a statement posted yesterday on the Saints’ website, Bush  blamed the media for his decision: ”The persistent media speculation regarding allegations dating back to my years at USC has been both painful and distracting.” Hmm. Even thought he admits “mistakes,” Bush doesn’t really take full responsibility for this awful  situation nor the dishonor he has brought to himself and USC.

Recently, after a lengthy investigation, the NCAA determined Bush took cash and gifts from would-be agents while in college, according to the Los Angeles Times. That’s a clear violation of National Collegiate Athletic Association standards. There’s a good chance Bush would have been stripped of his Heisman, so he gave it up.

Also in that statement, Bush offers to help  ”…establish an educational program which will assist student-athletes and their families avoid some of the mistakes that I made.”  Again, Bush needs to come clean about his mistakes before he can really help others to avoid them or find redemption from them.

Here’s the full statement by Reggie Bush regarding the Heisman Trophy from the Saints website.

One of the greatest honors of my life was winning the Heisman Trophy in 2005. For me, it was a dream come true.

But I know that the Heisman is not mine alone. Far from it. I know that my victory was made possible by the discipline and hard work of  my teammates, the steady guidance of my coaches, the inspiration of the fans, and the unconditional love of my family and friends. And I know that any young man fortunate enough to win the Heisman enters into a family of sorts. Each individual carries the legacy of the award and each one is entrusted with its good name.

It is for these reasons that I have made the difficult decision to forfeit my title as Heisman winner of 2005. The persistent media speculation regarding allegations dating back to my years at USC has been both painful and distracting. In no way should the storm around these allegations reflect in any way on the dignity of this award, nor on any other institutions or individuals. Nor should it distract from outstanding performances and hard-earned achievements either in the past, present or future.

For the rest of my days, I will continue to strive to demonstrate through my actions and words that I was deserving of the confidence placed in me by the Heisman Trophy Trust. I would like to begin in this effort by turning a negative situation into a positive one by working with the Trustees to establish an educational program which will assist student-athletes and their families avoid some of the mistakes that I made. I am determined to view this event as an opportunity to help others and to advance the values and mission of the Heisman Trophy Trust.

I will forever appreciate the honor bestowed upon me as a winner of the Heisman. While this decision is heart-breaking, I find solace in knowing that the award was made possible by the support and love of so many. Those are gifts that can never be taken away.

Lady Gaga wore the most outrageous outfit to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles last night. The 24-year-old singer went on to win 8 awards – a record for the VMAs.  However, the appearances by Kanye West and Taylor Swift probably produced the most drama. Last year, West interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video to declare the award should have gone to Beyoncé.

People has the drama, the performances, the fashion, and more from the VMAs here.

Action flicks dominate weekend Box Office

Movie poster for Resident Evil:Afterlife 3D

George Clooney got drop kicked to the curb and beyond by a female action hero over the weekend.  “Resident Evil:Afterlife 3D” starring Milla Jovovich annihilated the competition with a debut estimated at $27.7 million — to become the new number one film in the country.

In this fourth installment of the “Resident Evil” franchise, Milla Jovovich plays Alice Clones who hooks up with some survivors in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles. The cast includes Ali Larter and Wentworth Miller.

The action drama “Takers” captured second place with around $6 million. Last week’s top film, Clooney’s “The American” managed only third with about $5.8 million, followed by the actioner “Machete” with  $4.2 million and rounding out the top five, the romantic comedy, “Going the Distance” with an estimated $3.8 million.

Actress Eva Longoria Parker joined the star parade on the red carpet for the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony at the Nokia Theater in Downtown Los Angeles this evening.  The “Desperate Housewives” star gets my vote for being very glam in a Robert Rodriquez gown and one of the best dressed celebs on the red carpet.

People magazine website has more photos of the star parade as well as a report on the night’s big winners including “Modern Family” Best Comedy series and Jim Parson, Best Actor in a comedy series for “The Big Bang Theory.”

Entertainment News Bits: Lakers win game 6, White House party crasher gets TV gig, Hollywood studios and agencies convene, Tony Awards recap

Lakers blow out the Celtics in game 6 of NBA Finals

Photo: Robert Gauthier/The Los Angeles Times — Actor and Devoted Laker fan, Jack Nicholson points to the Celtics bench during game 6 of the NBA finals at Staples Center, Downtown Los Angeles 06/15/10

The Los Angeles Lakers came out swinging and slamming in a must win game at Staples Center here in Los Angeles tonight. The Laker defense was awesome. Lakers trounced the Boston Celtics 89 to 67 in front of thousands cheering fans. But it ain’t over yet. The final “do or die” game 7 of this tough series between the two rivals is this Thursday at Staples.

Game notes and more photos on the Los Angeles Times website.

White House party crasher lands TV series job

You might not remember her name, but I bet you remember the face in photos like the one above with Vice President Joe Biden and her husband, Tareq Salahi.  Michaele Salahi and her partner gained notoriety for crashing President Obama’s first State Dinner on November 24, 2009. A very bold duo. They took photos with the likes the veepee and White House Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, and then posted them on Facebook!

Yeah, the White House staff, Secret Service and other authorities got embarrassed and upset by the couple’s antics. But it paid off for them in tons of publicity and now a role on the new TV series “The Real Housewives of D.C” for Michaele Salahi.  Get more details on The Wrap.

Hollywood studios and agencies meet over Box Office gloom

The domestic Box Office was up this past weekend, but the bad vibes produced by the downturn of recent weeks still hangs heavy over Hollywood. So much so, that studio executives  are meeting with top Tinseltown agencies to try ti figure out what moviegoers want to see on the big screen, says Nikki Finke over at Deadline.com/Hollywood. And that may be a good thing for creators of original and fresh scripts. Let’s hope.

Hollywood shines at the Tony Awards

The telecast of the 64th Annual Tony Awards hit a soar note in the Nielsen ratings (down 6 percent from last year) with an average viewership of 7 million, according to TV by the Numbers .  Still, it was a super night at the Tony Awards for Hollywood stars with Catherine Zeta-Jones, Scarlett Johansson, and Denzel Washington winning trophies.

Also, Actor Sean Hayes is getting kudos for his hosting duties.  The Hollywood Reporter has a nice recap of Broadway’s big night, the best lines, the dramas, the musicals, and who won what.

It’s a wrap for Burbank Mayor Gary Bric

Photo: FLLewis/A Writer’s Groove — Burbank Mayor Gary Bric read a statement about the lawsuits and investigations swirling around the Burbank Police Department at the September 29, 2009 city council meeting.

Mayor Gary Bric is off the hook… somewhat. Last night, Bric presided over his last Burbank City Council meeting. Over the past months, Bric has improved in his job. The soon-to-be-ex-mayor still needs work in some areas, like when it comes to handling the public comment sections of the meeting.

The way it’s set up, each person gets five minutes to speak on matters related to Burbank or city business in the first comment section. There were 24 cards from people who wanted to step to the podium last night.  As he has in the past, Bric suggested the speakers be brief and not take all of their allotted time. I think folks who come down to city hall and go before the council with their concerns and issues, should not be discouraged from speaking the entire five minutes. It’s their right. The council members have the responsibility and duty to listen and take those concerns seriously — even if the number of commenters push the meeting to a late hour.

Also, Bric has gained the confidence to stand-up to Councilman/tough guy, Dave Golonski. Last night, Golonski became impatient with Burbank resident Eden Rosen’s explanation of the problems in her apartment building and interrupted her. Golonski claimed Rosen’s complaints did not rise to the level of city business. Rosen insisted it was Burbank business because the building on Olive Avenue was subsidized with taxpayer funds. Bric decided Rosen had a right to speak. Council members Anja Reinke, Jess Talamantes, and Dr. David Gordon refused to get involved — so Bric’s opinion won out.

Over on The Burbank Leader website, there’s a farewell statement from Mayor Gary Bric. The mayor doesn’t mention the Burbank police mess (those lawsuits and investigations), instead focusing on events such as the unveiling of the Dr. David Burbank statue and his trip to South Korea with Vice-Mayor Reinke.

Speaking of Reinke, she has the inside track to become the city’s next mayor. That’s reason to worry. Frequently, Reinke is barely attentive at council meetings and has not shown a lot of sensitivity to the concerns of regular Burbank citizens.

Example, Reinke has been dancing around scheduling a town hall meeting for the Burbank Police Commission to hear citizen concerns. At the Wednesday, April 21 Burbank Police Commission meeting, the Vice-Mayor did a clumsy tap-dance around why she hadn’t made any progress in scheduling the town hall meeting. Reinke seems more intent on getting “answers” and “plans” together to defend the city rather than giving citizens the opportunity to speak their minds.

Last night Reinke, who is the liaison from the council to the police commission, brought up the town hall meeting, hinting she might have something relevant to say about it at the next police commission meeting, Wednesday, May 19, 2010. Reinke is a fast talker. I just wish there was more substance in what she says.

Oh, if Reinke is having trouble figuring out how to organize a town hall meeting, perhaps she should ask those who put together the two city council town hall meetings in 2008, which she attended. Below, are a couple of photos from those town hall gatherings.

Another controversial firing at a top Hollywood agency

Nikki Finke is reporting on her  Deadline.com Hollywood that another talent agency controversy is brewing involving a minority assistant. This time the assistant, Katrina Lopez, was shown the door by United Talent Agency for a writing a blog or blog post called “Confessions of a Hollywood Serial Dater.”  According to Finke’s sources, Lopez did not mention names or where she worked. However, a UTA executive is quoted in Finke’s post as saying the assistant violated a number of company policies (probably some they are busy creating now) as well as she “…chronicled personal details of a UTA employee she was dating.” The UTA executive thinks the firing puts an “…end to the story.”  No way. It’s being talked about on the Internet, and according to Finke, the assistant is considering legal action.

Burbank student wins major scholarship

Burbank High School student Heawon Yang is one of the 2010 Gates Millennium Scholars!  One thousand outstanding minority students were selected from 45 states, Washington, DC, and three U.S. territories. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation shelled out $1.6 billion for the scholarship program, which is administered by the United Negro College Fund.

Gates Millennium Scholars receive financial assistance, academic support, mentoring and leadership training. The program was established in 1999 by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda. Wow, talking about putting your money to work to help others. These scholars, who come from low-income homes, reportedly have an average graduation rate of almost 80 percent — 45 percent higher than the six year rate for all college students.

“By supporting a diverse cadre of students to earn their degrees, we can help develop the next generation of leaders in communities across the country,” according to Senior Program Officer at the Gates Foundation, Margaret Daniels Tyler.

Bees buzzing Burbank and beyond

I spotted some of those eager pollinators in my flower garden during the past few days. Hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees — the most prolific pollinators. Bees are being watched very carefully not just by researchers, but by average gardeners. In 2006, millions of bees died or mysteriously disappeared. Some experts have labeled it “Colony Collapse Disorder.”

The phenomenon could be the result of a virus, predatory mites or even pesticide. Scientists haven’t reached a definitive conclusion.  The bee decline continues, but has slowed down some. The other pollinators such as wasps and butterflies have suffered as well — but none has been as hard hit as the bees.

Bees help plants and flowers flourish our gardens, as well as  pollinate one third of the crops in our food supply. Due to the bee die-off and its ramifications, I appreciate bees more when I see them at work in my yard.

Meanwhile, researchers up north at U.C. Berkeley have been studying the diversity and habits of native bees in the state since 2005. La Canãda Flintridge is a part of that survey, which is an extension of the Urban Bee Project that’s being ongoing since 1987. The other cities in the survey are Ukiah, Sacramento, Berkeley, Santa Cruz, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara.

So far, La Canãda Flintridge has scored the largest number of bees with 94 species. Probably some of those species go hunting for pollen and nectar in the flower beds and landscaped areas of Burbank as well.  Want to learn more? Loads of bees-in-your-garden tips here.

She did it!  Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the best director Oscar at last night’s 82nd Annual Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood. Bigelow’s name was announced by Superstar Entertainer/Filmmaker Barbra Streisand, who was overlooked as a contender for the award back when she directed “Yentl” (1983), “The Prince of Tides” (1991), and “The Mirror Has Two Faces” (1996).

Bigelow’s best director Oscar was one of six wins for “The Hurt Locker,” which included  best original screenplay, picked up by screenwriter/producer Mark Boal, and best picture.

The winners in the other top categories were Sandra Bullock, best actress for her performance in “The Blind Side,” Mo’Nique best supporting actress for her role in  “Precious: Based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” best actor trophy went to Jeff Bridges for his performance in “Crazy Heart,” and best supporting actor award to Christoph Waltz for his role in “Inglourious Basterds.”

Final Oscar voting ballots & update on some producer credits

Fronnie Lewis
February 11th, 2010

“The Hurt Locker” nominated for Best Picture Oscar

Final voting ballots for the 82nd Academy Awards are in the mail. Ballots were carefully sorted, counted, and mailed out yesterday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with an assist from the high-powered accounting firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The ballots should be arriving soon at the mailboxes of the academy’s 5,777 members. The completed ballots must reach PricewaterhouseCoopers no later than 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 2. The votes will be tabulated and the winners announced on Oscar night, Sunday ,March 7 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. ABC will carry the Academy Awards Ceremony, which honors outstanding film achievements in 2009, live beginning at 5 p.m. Pacific Time. According to the academy, the ceremony will be seen live in more than 200 countries around the globe.

Oh, and the matter of the producer credit dilemma on two of the best picture nominees has been cleared up. Last week, the Academy’s Producers Branch Executive Committee announced the credits for “The Blind Side” and “The Hurt Locker.”

“The Blind Side”  Gil Netter, Andrew A. Kosove, and Broderick Johnson, producers.

“The Hurt Locker”  Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal, Nicolas Chartier, and Greg Shapiro, producers.

Normally, the academy only allows three producers to be credited on best picture nominees, however,  under “extraordinary circumstances” an additional producer may be listed. The academy’s committee determined “The Hurt Locker” met the requirements to have four people listed as producers.

And the Academy Award nominees are…?

Fronnie Lewis
February 2nd, 2010

“The Blind Side” nominated for best picture

Some surprises when the nominees for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards were announced in Beverly Hills today. It was pretty much a given that sci-fi epic “Avatar” and the gritty Iraq drama “The Hurt Locker” would be in the best picture category. However, eight other films made the cut as well including the provocative sci-fi thriller, “District 9,” and that heartwarming football drama, “The Blind Side.”  Both surprises and good examples of the kind of variety in the best picture category we like to see.

The other best picture nominees are the animated comedy, “Up,” the Nazi drama “Inglourious Basterds,” the British coming of age drama, “An Education,” the dark comedy, “A Serious Man,”  the teenage mother drama “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” and the comedy/drama, “Up in the Air.”

Already there is controversy and competition underway for the best director and best picture Oscars. Kathryn Bigelow scooped up the best feature film director award from the DGA a few days ago and a number of other accolades, while James Cameron’s “Avatar” has been breaking all kinds of records at the Box Office and making a ton of money. Cameron and Bigelow were once married to each other. That adds an interesting twist to the Oscar race.

Also, Nikki Finke is reporting over on her Deadline.com Hollywood site about the behind-the-scenes drama over producer credits on some of the nominated films. In the past, the jockeying for  the chance to be on stage to pick up a best picture Oscar has turned ugly and in at least one case, ended up in court.

Here are the nominees in the other top categories:

For best director: James Cameron “Avatar,” Kathryn Bigelow “The Hurt Locker,” Quentin Tarantino “Inglourious Basterds,” Lee Daniels “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” and Jason Reitman for “Up in the Air.”

For best actresses the Academy voters selected Sandra Bullock for “The Blind Side,” Helen Mirren “The Last Station,” Carey Mulligan for “An Education” Gabourey Sidibe for “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” and Meryl Streep for “Julie & Julia.”

Best actor nominees:  Jeff Bridges “Crazy Heart,” Colin Firth “A Single Man,”  George Clooney “Up in the Air,” Jeremy Renner “The Hurt Locker,” and Morgan Freeman for “Invictus.”

Best supporting actor: Matt Damon “Invictus,” Woody Harrelson “The Messenger,” Christopher Plummer “The Last Station,” Stanley Tucci “The Lovely Bones,” and Christoph Waltz “Inglourious Basterds.”

Best supporting actress: Penélope Cruz “Nine,” Vera Farmiga “Up in the Air,” Maggie Gyllenhaal “Crazy Heart,” Anna Kendrick “Up in the Air,” and Mo’Nique “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.”

Best adapted screenplay: “District 9″ Neill Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell, “An Education” Nick Hornby, “In the Loop” Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci, Tony Roche, “Precious: Based on The Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” Geoffrey Fletcher, “Up in the Air” Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner.

Best original screenplay: “The Hurt Locker” Mark Boal, “Inglourious Basterds” Quentin Tarantino, “The Messenger” Alessandro Camon and Oren Moverman, “A Serious Man” Joel and Ethan Coen, “Up” Bob Peterson, Pete Docter, and Tom McCarthy.

For a complete list of the nominees click here.

The 82nd Annual Academy Awards ceremony will be Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

Big moments at the 2010 Grammy Awards

The artistry of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, loomed large over the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, Sunday night, January 31. A nice star-studded musical tribute to the late superstar was followed by the appearance of his two oldest children on stage to accept the entertainer’s lifetime achievement award.

During his life, MJ was criticized for just about everything he did — including being a parent. However, those two adorable kids, Paris,11, and Prince Michael,12, would make any parent proud. Prince Michael declared they would carry on with their father’s love crusade. ”We will continue to spread his message and help the world.”

It was a huge night for Beyoncé as well, who won an incredible six Grammys among them:  best female pop vocal performance for “Halo,” best female R&B vocal performance, and song of the year for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it). The song of the year award is for songwriting. Yes, Beyoncé is not only a talented performer, but a skilled writer as well. The singer co-wrote, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it),” a very catchy ditty that folks were humming and singing for months. I dug it, too.

Also, Beyoncé made Grammy history. She’s the first female to take home a half-dozen Grammys in one night.

Rising country star Taylor Swift was not far behind Beyoncé in the Grammy count. Swift took home four Grammys, including the night’s biggest award for album of the year for “Fearless.”  Swift won trophies for best country album, best country song, and best female country vocal performance for ”White Horse.” Swift is multi-talented as well. She co-wrote, “White Horse.”

Fellow “American Idol” alumnus and country star, Carrie Underwood, did not leave the Los Angeles’ Staples Center empty handed. Underwood and Randy Travis won the best country collaboration with vocals award for “I Told You So.” This Grammy goes to the artists who don’t usually perform together. Underwood and Travis were a perfect match for this bittersweet ballad. It’s one of the best duo performances in country, pop, or whatever. The song is one of my favorites from 2009.

Kathryn Bigelow wins the DGA’s best feature film director award!

Fronnie Lewis
January 31st, 2010

Photo from http://www.dga.org

Director James Cameron is king of the Box Office right now, but the Directors Guild of America picked filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow as the best feature film director of 2009. The winner was announced last night at the 62nd Annual DGA Awards dinner in Los Angeles.

The 58-year-old Bigelow won for the highly acclaimed Iraq-war drama, “The Hurt Locker.” She is the first woman to ever win the prestigious award, considered a reliable predictor of who will walk away with the best director Oscar. Bigelow is quoted in the Los Angeles Times as saying: “This is amazing. I’m so deeply stunned, honored and awed.”

Bigelow and the film have won numerous awards, including the Darryl F. Zanuck producer of the year award from the Producers Guild of America, last Sunday in Hollywood. The Academy Award nominations will be announced on Tuesday, February 2, and the big money is on Bigelow’s name being mentioned for best director.

16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards winners celebrated

Fronnie Lewis
January 24th, 2010

Several of the winners at the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony in the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center last night are now serious front runners to collect an Oscar this year. Sandra Bullock took home the Actor statuette for outstanding performance by an actress in a motion picture for her role in the football drama, “The Blind Side.” Jeff Bridges won best actor for his lead role in the film “Crazy Heart.”  Also, Mo’Nique won the most votes from her fellow actors for her supporting performance in the movie drama, “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.” All three won Golden Globes for those roles, too.

Christoph Waltz picked up the award for outstanding male supporting actor for his performance in the Nazi drama, “Inglourious Basterds.” He can sit that award next to the Golden Globe he won for the same performance, last Sunday. Oh, it was a big night for “Inglourious Basterds,” which won the trophy for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture as well.

So I would be very surprised, no, downright shocked, if Bullock, Bridges, Mo’Nique, and Waltz don’t hear their names mentioned on Tuesday, February 2, when the Academy Awards nominees are announced.

Outstanding performance by a male actor in a television movie or miniseries went to Kevin Bacon for his role in “Taking Chance.” Drew Barrymore won the outstanding performance by a female in a television movie or miniseries for “Grey Gardens.” Earlier, Bacon and Barrymore picked up Golden Globes for the same performances.
