Bo (the new First Dog) arrives at the White House

President Barack Obama has fulfilled a campaign promise to his daughters Malia and Sasha; they finally got the dog they had been hoping and wishing for and quickly named him Bo. The six-month-old Portuguese water dog is a gift from Senator Edward M. Kennedy who has several Porties. For a while there, Bo was the best kept secret in Washington, D.C. An official debut was set for Tuesday, but word of the new first pet leaked out, according to The Washington Post.

I gotta gush a bit here. Bo is one cute little dude. The Post describes him as having “… tuxedo-black fur, with a white chest, white paws and a rakish white goatee.”

Events surrounding Bo have been very clandestine over the past few weeks. Recently, the pooch had a secret get acquainted meet with the first family. Apparently the little guy charmed the heck out of the Obamas and quickly won the position of White House pet. These photos are from The White House Blog.

The president’s surprise visit with our troops in Iraq

President Barack Obama paid a surprise visit to Camp Victory in Baghdad, Iraq yesterday, before ending his eight-day foreign trip and returning to the White House early this morning. The president met with U.S. military commanders and Iraqi leaders for an update on the war situation. Then Obama got a wild and enthusiastic greeting from the troops, which included handshakes and even a fist-bump. Also, the president awarded the Purple Heart medal to several brave U.S. soldiers.

The president addressed the troops and said: “Under enormous strain and under enormous sacrifice, through controversy and difficulty and politics, you’ve kept your eyes focused on just doing your job.  And because of that, every mission that’s been assigned — from getting rid of Saddam, to reducing violence, to stabilizing the country, to facilitating elections — you have given Iraq the opportunity to stand on its own as a democratic country.  That is an extraordinary achievement, and for that you have the thanks of the American people.”  The full text and more photos are on The White House Blog.

First Lady Michelle Obama joined the wives of the NATO Summit leaders in a tour of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Strasbourg, France yesterday. Built on the site of a Roman Temple in 1284, the Gothic Roman Catholic church is known for its remarkable architecture and details such as several stained glass windows and distinctive spire.

Mrs. Obama is shown in the photo above listening to an interpreter with Hayrunnisa Gul, the wife of the president of Turkey. Two photos of the NATO Summit wives on tour are on The White House Blog.

President Barack Obama and his wife are on an eight day visit to Europe. Yesterday at the NATO Summit, President Obama won the backing of the leaders in the 28-nation military alliance to send five thousand more troops and personnel to Afghanistan.

G-20 Summit leading delegates gather for group photos 04/02/09    Chuck Kennedy/The White House

At a news conference yesterday President Barack Obama summed up the achievements of the G-20 Summit in London: “…  after weeks of preparation, and two days of careful negotiation, we have agreed on a series of unprecedented steps to restore growth and prevent a crisis like this from happening again.”

The President said some of the major points of the summit agreement are “growth and job creation”, “support of developing countries,” and rejection of “… the protectionism that could deepen this crisis.” The multi-trillion dollar plan will include reform of the international banking system as well.

The White House blog has the president’s full statement as well as Q&A with reporters from that news conference at the ExCel centre in East London.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle enjoyed a private visit with Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip, today at Buckingham Palace. In a gift exchange, the Obamas gave the royals a special video iPod and a rare songbook by American composer Richard Rodgers. The British couple gifted the Obamas with a signed portrait of themselves.

President Obama is in London for a series of meetings and the G-20 Summit set to officially get underway tomorrow. The 20 leaders of the world’s largest economic powers will grapple with the global financial crisis and try to come to some agreement on what to do about it.

President Obama faces the nation in prime-time

Fronnie Lewis
March 25th, 2009

President Barack Obama took to the air waves last night for the second prime-time news conference of his 64-day-old administration. President Obama’s main goal was to rally the country around his proposed new $3.6 trillion budget, which is causing debate in Congress mainly because of its huge dollar commitment.

In his news conference, the president described how his budget: “… will build our economic recovery on a stronger foundation so that we don’t face another crisis like this 10 or 20 years from now. We invest in the renewable sources of energy that will lead to new jobs, new businesses and less dependence on foreign oil. We invest in our schools and our teachers, so that our children have the skills they need to compete with any workers in the world. We invest in reform that will bring down the cost of health care for families, businesses and our government. And in this budget, we have to make the tough choices necessary to cut our deficit in half by the end of my first term…”

The president expressed confidence that: “We’ll recover from this recession, but it will take time…” After his opening statement, Obama took questions from reporters on a variety of subjects including stem cell research, the Mexican drug/border violence problem, and the Israeli & Palestinian conflict. However, most the reporter questions focused on shoring up the weak economy and financial system; providing the president with more chances to push the benefits of his recovery plan.

The president readily admitted our economic crisis is serious, but insisted our country is still stable: “I would just point out that the dollar is extraordinarily strong right now. And the reason the dollar is strong right now is because investors consider the United States the strongest economy in the world with the most stable political system in the world.”

President Obama makes historic appearance on “Tonight Show”

Fronnie Lewis
March 20th, 2009

FLLewis/A Writer’s Groove

President Barack Obama is back in Washington, D.C. today after a whirlwind visit to the Southland. President Obama wrapped up two days of events with a trip to Burbank to tape a guest appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” late yesterday.

This is the first time a  U.S. President has sat down for a chat on the ”Tonight Show.” However, Obama has been on the late night show twice before: December of 2006 and October of 2007. So the president was quite comfortable with the routine of trading quips with Leno in front of a studio audience.

The president joked about the tight security that goes with the highest office in the land, getting a dog for his daughters, and sports. Also, Obama admitted “it’s pretty cool” flying on Air Force One. Nevertheless, he did talk about serious concerns like the struggling economy and those controversial AIG bonuses: “… the immediate bonuses that went to AIG are a problem. But the larger problem is we’ve got to get back to an attitude where people know enough is enough, and people have a sense of responsibility and they understand that their actions are going to have an impact on everybody. And if we can get back to those values that built America, then I think we’re going to be okay.”

The president hit his mark on the important issues, however, he became a little too relaxed during the lighter moments and that resulted in a gaffe. It is well known that the Commander-in-Chief is better at shooting basketball hoops than bowling. While discussing his recent bowling efforts the president said: “…it was like Special Olympics or something.”

The president and the White House realized his misstep pretty quickly. On the flight back to Washington, DC last night, the president reportedly phoned Tim Shriver, the chairman of the Special Olympics, to apologize for the remark and explain he did not intend to disparage those with special needs.

In 1968, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister of U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy, founded Special Olympics to benefit those with intellectual disabilities. Senator Kennedy is one of Obama’s strongest political supporters. The White House released a transcript of the ”Tonight Show” interview of the president by Leno and its on the www.whitehouse.gov website.

Earlier in the day, the president stood before another enthusiastic crowd of more than a thousand people at the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex near Downtown Los Angeles. Just like the day before in OC, during this town hall meeting the president fielded questions on a variety of subjects, most dealing with the weak economy, jobs, and his stimulus plan.

Thursday morning, President Obama went out to Pomona to visit the Edison Electric Vehicle Technical Center. Also, the president met with some Village Academy High School students who made a video about the painful effects the economic crisis has had on their families.

President Obama gets cheers and applause in the OC

Fronnie Lewis
March 19th, 2009

 Luis Sinco/Los Angeles Times

President Barack Obama and his team today are probably doing a quick review of his performance at yesterday’s town hall meeting at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa. It seems to me that the president pretty much rocked the place.

The one thousand or so folks in the auditorium cheered and applauded like so many did during Obama’s presidential campaign. That’s really a surprise in Orange County, the bastion of conservative Republican views, a county the president did not win during the November election. It appears some in the OC have tossed aside political party affiliation and embraced the president as a leader worthy of their respect and confidence.

For an hour, President Obama took questions from the audience on everything from his economic stimulus plan to job losses to immigration to the financial mess. Before the president opened up the floor to questions, he responded to the public outrage about AIG dishing out $165 million in bonuses after accepting $170-plus billion of taxpayers’ money:”It goes against our most basic sense of what’s fair and what’s right. It offends our values.” He vowed to “take responsibility ” as president to fix the “system and the culture” that made those unfair bonuses possible.

When it was over, you got the feeling the president coud have remained on stage for several hours in that packed auditorium doing a lively Q&A with the audience. Later today, President Obama will hold his second town hall meeting in Downtown Los Angeles before heading to Burbank for an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”

Despite spending hours in line just for a chance at a ticket for President Barack Obama’s town hall meeting at the Orange County Fairground and Event Center in Costa Mesa, many folks were in the mood to have a bit of fun by performing the “wave” yesterday.

Those fortunate enough to get tickets returned to the fairgrounds this morning to wait again. Hundreds of people have to go through some very tight security checks before the town hall meeting gets underway around 4 p.m.

President Obama is due to arrive on Air Force One at Long Beach Airport around 3 p.m. and will then go by motorcade or helicopter to the fairgrounds.

According to the Orange County Fairgrounds and Event Center website, the town hall meeting will be carried live by local TV station ABC-7. On the web, the meeting will be live at KCAL/CBS cbs.com and ABC-TV abc7.com

Also, KNX 1070 newsradio will be broadcasting the town hall live on its station as well as on its website.

Hundreds line up for tickets to see President Obama in the OC

March 17th, 2009

Allen J. Schaben/ Los Angeles Times

At the Orange County Fairgrounds today, a long line of hopefuls waited for hours to get tickets to President Barack Obama’s town hall meeting tomorrow. Some media reports say as many as a thousand people were in line. KNX 1070 newsradio reported that some arrived as early as 3 p.m. Monday afternoon, even though the distribution of the first-come first-serve tickets did not begin until today at 10 a.m.

The tickets went fast, but some got lucky like Ralph Hardy, who says he tried to make it to the presidential inauguration of Obama, but his car broke down. Hardy wept when he scored one of the free tickets and was consoled by Adam Ripps. More photos on the Los Angeles Times website.

The town hall meeting with President Obama is set to begin around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

An angry President Obama moves to block AIG bonuses

Fronnie Lewis
March 16th, 2009

President Barack Obama reacted with “outrage” today to news of the insurance giant, AIG, handing out $165 million in bonuses after receiving $173 billion in government bailout funds. At the White House, the president lashed out at AIG: “This is a corporation that finds itself in financial distress due to recklessness and greed.”

The president pointed out that regular folks across the nation are struggling to stay afloat in this weak economy without the benefits of government bailout money or multi-million dollar bonuses. President Obama says his administration will “… pursue every single legal avenue to block these bonuses.”

Right on. If American International Group insists on giving bonuses to the executives that helped wreck the corporation, then it should pay back every dollar, nickle, and dime of bailout money to the government immediately. The fact that AIG officials have the nerve to pay out these bonuses and then justify them, shows the need for more federal regulation of large financial institutions. Also, I continue to believe that AIG is too big to function as a viable corporation and should be broken up into several smaller companies.

President Obama creates White House Council on Women and Girls

Fronnie Lewis
March 12th, 2009

White House photo/Chuck Kennedy

This is Women’s History month. While some look back at the progress made by women, others look ahead at what still needs to be done. Yesterday, President Obama did both at a ceremony for the signing of an executive order creating a White House Council on Women and Girls.

President Obama said the purpose of the council “… is to ensure that American women and girls are treated fairly in all matters of public policy,” Before the president signed the executive order, he paid tribute to the achievements and struggles of women in his family, his wife, his mother, grandmother and their counterparts across the nation.

The president said it is time for a coordinated federal response to the challenges facing females of all ages: ” So now it’s up to us … to ensure that our daughters and granddaughters have no limits on their dreams, no obstacles to their achievements — and that they have opportunities their mothers and grandmothers and great grandmothers never dreamed of. ”

Obama signed the executive order surrounded by some of the high ranking women in his administration and the government, among them House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  Prominent women like California Senator Barbara Boxer and WNBA superstar Lisa Leslie were in the audience as well.

Day 48: President Obama removes federal ban on embryonic stem cell research

Fronnie Lewis
March 9th, 2009

White House photo/Pete Souza

President Barack Obama signed an executive order today lifting the Bush Administration’s ban on using federal funds for controversial embryonic stem cell research. President Obama conceded ”the promise of stem cell research remains unknown,” but sees great opportunities in that promise: “…  scientists believe these tiny cells may have the potential to help us understand, and possibly cure, some of our most devastating diseases and conditions. To regenerate a severed spinal cord and lift someone from a wheelchair. To spur insulin production and spare a child from a lifetime of needles. To treat Parkinson’s, cancer, heart disease and others that affect millions of Americans and the people who love them.”

Also, the president acknowledged the heated debate over this type of research and criticized the Bush administration’s position: ”…..rather than furthering discovery, our government has forced what I believe is a false choice between sound science and moral value … As a person of faith, I believe we are called to care for each other and work to ease human suffering. I believe we have been given the capacity and will to pursue this research – and the humanity and conscience to do so responsibly.”

In his remarks, the president paid tribute to two crusaders of stem cell research, Christopher and Dana Reeve. The paralyzed actor/activist died before research could help him walk again. President Obama noted: ”Christopher did not get that chance. But if we pursue this research, maybe one day – maybe not in our lifetime, or even in our children’s lifetime – but maybe one day, others like him might.”

Meanwhile, former First Lady Nancy Reagan released a statement  praising President Obama for overturning the ban. Mrs. Reagan has been  a supporter of stem cell research for many years. Former President Ronald Reagan died June 5, 2004, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease — an illness scientists hope  embryonic stem cell research will help cure one day.

White House News: Michelle Obama & Stevie Wonder

Fronnie Lewis
February 28th, 2009

White House photo/ Joyce N. Boghosian from www.whitehouse.gov

This is the official portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama. It was released yesterday and yes, continues to fuel the controversy over the first lady’s propensity to go sleeveless. According to the Mrs-O website, this stunning black dress is from Michael Kors’ spring 2009 collection.

In my opinion, this time Michelle scored high marks on three levels: the dress is appropriate and it showcases her personal style and personal preference. Whether you’re a fan or not, you’ve gotta admit the first lady looks sharp and confident in the portrait. And you can’t miss those toned bare arms. How long do you think it will be before the first lady gets a publishing deal to write a book about her exercise routine?

White House photo/ Pete Souza from www.whitehouse.gov

Last Wednesday night, President Obama presented legendary entertainer Stevie Wonder with the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize for Popular Song during an affair at the White House. The Gershwin prize is named for George and Ira Gershwin, the famous American song writing team of such classics as “Someone To Watch Over Me” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.” The award honors lifetime achievement in popular music.

The president and the first lady stressed the importance of Wonder’s music in their personal lives. In fact, the first couple used Wonder’s “You and I” as their wedding song. Also, President Obama noted Wonder’s universal appeal: “Millions of people around the world have found similar comfort and joy in Stevie’s music and its unique capacity to find hope in struggle and humanity in our common hardships.”

Wonder’s career has been prolific. He has released at least 35 albums, which have sold  more than 72 million copies. He has 30 top ten hits, 11 # 1 pop singles, and won 19 Grammys. Wonder is very active in political and charitable causes as well. Locally, Wonder owns urban adult contemporary radio station 102.3 KJLH.

Day 38: President Obama outlines plan to end Iraq war

Fronnie Lewis
February 27th, 2009

White House photo/Pete Souza

”Let me say this as plainly as I can: by August 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end,” that coming from President Barack Obama today during an appearance at Camp Lejeune, a Marine base in North Carolina. The President said. “We sent our troops to Iraq to do away with Saddam Hussein’s regime – and you got the job done. We kept our troops in Iraq to help establish a sovereign government – and you got the job done. And we will leave the Iraqi people with a hard-earned opportunity to live a better life – that is your achievement; that is the prospect that you have made possible.”

The president’s plan calls for 35-to-50,000 of our troops to remain in Iraq and be slowly withdrawn during a period of transition. Nevertheless, by December 31, 2011 all U.S. forces will be out of Iraq — per an agreement made by the Bush administration and the Iraqi government last year.

The president pointed out the future success of the Iraqi nation will be determined by its leaders and its people: “We will complete this transition to Iraqi responsibility, and we will bring our troops home with the honor that they have earned.”

Next month marks the sixth anniversary of the Iraq war.

President Obama speaks to Congress and the nation

Fronnie Lewis
February 25th, 2009

White House photo/ Pete Souza

President Obama’s first speech to a joint session of congress is being analysed and scrutinized today. So I’m having my say. First, I agree with a radio commentator who called last night’s address a “pep talk” to keep Americans inspired and focused on the tough job of rebuilding the nation’s economy and confidence in our financial systems.

A New York Times editorial complimented the president’s speech for being right on target: “He sounded confident — promising that the nation will rebuild and ‘emerge stronger than before’ — without minimizing the grave problems that must first be surmounted.”

Here are some highlights from President Obama’s speech.

“But while our economy may be weakened and our confidence shaken; though we are living through difficult and uncertain times, tonight I want every American to know this: We will rebuild, we will recover, and the United States of America will emerge stronger than before.”

”The fact is, our economy did not fall into decline overnight.  Nor did all of our problems begin when the housing market collapsed or the stock market sank.  We have known for decades that our survival depends on finding new sources of energy.  Yet we import more oil today than ever before.  The cost of health care eats up more and more of our savings each year, yet we keep delaying reform.  Our children will compete for jobs in a global economy that too many of our schools do not prepare them for.  And though all these challenges went unsolved, we still managed to spend more money and pile up more debt, both as individuals and through our government, than ever before.”

”So the recovery plan we passed is the first step in getting our economy back on track.  But it is just the first step.  Because even if we manage this plan flawlessly, there will be no real recovery unless we clean up the credit crisis that has severely weakened our financial system.”

”Second, we have launched a housing plan that will help responsible families facing the threat of foreclosure lower their monthly payments and re-finance their mortgages.  It’s a plan that won’t help speculators or that neighbor down the street who bought a house he could never hope to afford, but it will help millions of Americans who are struggling with declining home values – Americans who will now be able to take advantage of the lower interest rates that this plan has already helped bring about.  In fact, the average family who re-finances today can save nearly $2000 per year on their mortgage. ”

”Third, we will act with the full force of the federal government to ensure that the major banks that Americans depend on have enough confidence and enough money to lend even in more difficult times.  And when we learn that a major bank has serious problems, we will hold accountable those responsible, force the necessary adjustments, provide the support to clean up their balance sheets, and assure the continuity of a strong, viable institution that can serve our people and our economy.”

“But I also know that in a time of crisis, we cannot afford to govern out of anger, or yield to the politics of the moment.  My job – our job – is to solve the problem.  Our job is to govern with a sense of responsibility.  I will not spend a single penny for the purpose of rewarding a single Wall Street executive, but I will do whatever it takes to help the small business that can’t pay its workers or the family that has saved and still can’t get a mortgage. ”

“We are a nation that has seen promise amid peril, and claimed opportunity from ordeal.  Now we must be that nation again.  That is why, even as it cuts back on the programs we don’t need, the budget I submit will invest in the three areas that are absolutely critical to our economic future:  energy, health care, and education.”

“Those of us gathered here tonight have been called to govern in extraordinary times.  It is a tremendous burden, but also a great privilege – one that has been entrusted to few generations of Americans.  For in our hands lies the ability to shape our world for good or for ill. ”

Although his focus was on domestic problems, President Obama did make comments about international issues like the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The full text of the president’s address is on a number of major media outlets; as well as on the official White House Blog in several languages, along with video, and photos.

The day after release, new Spidey-Obama comic still in demand

Fronnie Lewis
February 19th, 2009

FLLewis/A Writer’s Groove — House of Secrets in Burbank

The day after the release of the fifth edition of the Amazing Spider-Man #583 featuring President Barack Obama, it’s still very much in demand. Over the past few days, a lot of folks have been calling House of Secrets on West Olive Avenue in Burbank searching for the comic. New issues usually appear in comic book shops on Wednesday.

Yesterday, House of Secrets got some of its order, but not the fifth edition Spidey-Obama comics. When I was in the shop on Wednesday, manager Erik Warfield was fielding calls asking about the popular issue. Warfield told me the Spidey-Obama issues could arrive by UPS later, well they did, today in fact.

Warfield says they got 150 issues of the fifth edition of the Spidey-Obama comics. First, Warfield filled some pre-orders. A hundred of those comics went to the Skirball Cultural Center on North Sepulveda Boulevard in Los Angeles. Today a special exhibit, “Zap! Pow! Bam! The Superhero: The Golden Age of Comic Books, 1938-1950” opened at the Skirball Cultural Center. The comic book exhibit runs through August 9, 2009.

By the time I spoke with Warfield around 4 :30 p.m. this afternoon, he had only “30 or so” of the fifth edition Spidey-Obama comics left. If this fifth edition is a hot seller at other shops and websites, then Marvel Comics will probably come up with another interesting way to team-up the president and the web slinging superhero.

Hot Spidey-Obama comic fifth edition released today

Fronnie Lewis
February 18th, 2009

President Barack Obama is not only making news on the economic front, but in the comic book world as well. Today Marvel Comics  released a fifth edition of its now famous Amazing Spider-Man # 583 featuring President Obama: “After numerous sold out printings, Marvel is going back to press with a record fifth printing arriving in stores February 18. Now’s your chance to experience the story uniting President Barack Obama with the character that, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he named his favorite super hero!”

The first Spidey-Obama comic hit stores on January 14, 2009. Even when the original price of $3.99 jumped to $40 in some places, the issue sold out in a flash! Marvel quickly went back to press for a second, third, fourth, and now a fifth edition with the Lincoln Memorial on the cover.

I dropped by the House of Secrets on Olive Avenue In Burbank around 11:30 this morning hoping to pick up a copy of the new Spidey-Obama comic. Well, I got disappointed like many others who called or came into this comic book shop today. New comics are released on Wednesdays, but House of Secrets Manager Erik Warfield says for some unknown reason their order of the new Spidey-Obama comic did not come in.

So I took a drive to Legacy Comics and Cards on Wilson Avenue in Glendale and got lucky. Legacy had the new fifth edition of the Spidey-Obama comic, along with copies of the second, third, and fourth editions. The price was $3.99 each, except for the second edition, which was $9.99.  Assistant Manager Aaron Eaton says the second edition cost more because its yellow background has attracted a lot of interest from collectors.

The Spidey-Obama comics are on sale at speciality & novelty shops, as well as online at websites including  Amazon.

Day 28: President Obama signs $787 billion stimulus bill into law

Fronnie Lewis
February 17th, 2009

It’s a done deal. Less than a month into his new administration, President Barack Obama signed that massive and much fought-over $787 billion economic stimulus bill in Denver, Colorado today. President Obama reportedly used as many as 10 different pens to sign the measure.

Earlier, the media event was on the verge of becoming bogged down in speeches, when President Obama finally stepped to the mike. Perhaps, the White House should have stuck with a reported original plan of having the president sign the bill yesterday, Presidents Day; and then go on the road today and the rest of the week promoting it in various cities across the nation.

President Obama says the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is the most sweeping piece of legislation of its kind in our history: “What makes this recovery plan so important is not just that it will create or save 3½ million jobs over the next two years, including nearly 60,000 in Colorado. It’s that we are putting Americans to work doing the work that America needs done in critical areas that have been neglected for too long, work that will bring real and lasting change for generations to come.”

Again, the president spoke about the accountability of the bill: “With a recovery package of this scale comes a responsibility to assure every taxpayer that we are being careful with the money they work so hard to earn. That’s why I am assigning a team of managers to ensure that the precious dollars we have invested are being spent wisely and well. We will hold the governors and local officials who receive money to the same high standards. And we expect you, the American people, to hold us accountable for the results. That is why we have created Recovery.gov, so every American can go online and see how their money is being spent.”

That website is up and running today.
