New York Times bestselling author dishes on the dramatic changes in  the publishing industry

I always considered myself to be the walking, talking success story of American publishing.  I’m a lawyer, and at age 40, I had two babies back to back.  Suddenly, I was a stay-at-home mom and trying to figure out how to replace the income I relinquished due to this life change.

I decided to start writing novels.  I didn’t know anything about writing books or about the publishing industry.  I simply forged ahead, armed with a steely determination that I would figure it out and prosper in a big way.

After four years of trying, and seven finished manuscripts, I finally sold my first novel.  Over the next decade, I went on to write 28 books for four major New York publishing houses.  Along the way, I became a Waldenbooks, USA Today, and New York Times bestselling author.

But it came at a price.  I wore out my wrists and neck.  I now suffer from several stress-related conditions, and I nearly bankrupted by family by suffering through the financial ups and downs that come with an artistic career.  It was almost a relief when, at the end of 2009, my last publisher dropped me, and I decided to quit writing.

For almost a year and a half, I shut down my webpage and turned off my email.  I didn’t think I would miss writing, but such an intense artistic enterprise has a way of embedding itself into your DNA.

A friend began nagging at me to try again, and after months of listening to his harangue, I finally relented and agreed to start over one more time.  However, during my hiatus, the industry I knew and understood, where I had once worked so intensely, had vanished.

Books are an impulse purchase, made when people have extra money to spend.  With the crash of the economy in 2008, the publishing industry began to implode.  People stopped buying books.  At the publishing companies, there were massive layoffs, more mergers and consolidations, and it was a virtual bloodbath for authors.

The big book chains—that used to order 8 weeks of stock—began to order 2 weeks instead.  In response, the companies slashed their print runs, so even if an author had a book published, its shelf life flitted by in the blink of an eye.  Reprints of old titles became the norm; it’s much cheaper to republish an old book than to lay out the expense for a new one.

The “star” authors continued to write for the big companies, but many of the mid-list and low-list authors were dumped.  Borders finally filed for bankruptcy and will liquidate.  Barnes and Noble stores—if you’re lucky enough to still have one in your town—have shelves that look empty.

The authors who lost their spots with the NY publishing houses turned to e-books.  Their decisions to self-publish were made easier by the advent of functional e-book devices such as Kindle and Nook.

As I jumped into these turbulent waters, I quickly saw that there was no way for me to sell a manuscript to a NY print publisher.  There are only a handful of companies that publish paperbacks, and I had written for 4 of them.  The others had never been interested in signing me.  So NY was off the table.  What was I to do?  And how was I to do it?

Even though I didn’t want to begin self-publishing, I decided to try e-books.  I had been suffering from the opinion shared by many readers that e-books aren’t “real” books.  But I eventually realized that I was fussing like an old dinosaur.  I didn’t want to learn “new” things.  I didn’t want to start over in a new and scary world where all the rules had changed.

But I forged ahead and figured it out.  My first two e-books were posted on-line in June, and with their release, I sent out an announcement to my email fan list.

In reply, I received many happy letters from fans who already own e-readers and who were excited to read the new books. But I was surprised and saddened to receive dozens of really angry letters from avid readers who were upset about my switch to e-books. Many people said that I had “sold out” as a writer.

The division seemed to be age-based.  Younger readers told me they loved their electronic readers and were excited to see me embrace the new technology.  Older readers, who love their print books, were incensed and offended by the entire notion of e-books.  One reader asked, “If we continue down this road, what will happen to libraries?”

What indeed?

I didn’t have any satisfying answers for the angry people who wrote to me.  The book industry has changed—as has the author’s place in it.  As readers and writers, we can’t fix the economic factors driving all this chaos.  Authors are not flocking to e-books because they prefer them over print books.  They’re making the move out of necessity.  If you hear that your favorite author has published an e-book, the chance is great that she has lost her spot with her NY publisher.

More and more authors will be making this move, which will begin a burgeoning cycle of change.  More authors will be dropped by their publishers, so more authors will write e-books, so more devices will be invented, which will lower the price of e-readers and push even more readers into e-books.  In a few years, it’s likely that very few paperbacks will be published.  If a reader wants to find a book, an e-reader and on-line publisher may be the only way to do it.

For those of us who love books, it’s a daunting and scary thought.

Prince William and Kate Middleton left Los Angeles for home this afternoon, after an events packed three day visit to SoCal, which included a polo match in Santa Barbara, mingling with Hollywood stars at a gala, and chatting with inner-city kids on L.A.’s  Skid Row. People Magazine has complete coverage of the Royals’ visit on the last leg of their North American tour.  Also, check out People’s photo gallery of William and Kate doing the Southland here.

Dodgers: New security measures for games and a fundraiser for beating victim

Fronnie Lewis
April 8th, 2011

Los Angeles Dodgers owner, Frank McCourt, joined Los Angeles Mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa, and Los Angeles Police Chief, Charlie Beck, at a news conference today to unveil a new hard-line policy against disruptive fans. Mayor Villaraigosa said,” violence will not be tolerated” and that “public safety is number one.”

Police Chief Beck praised the Dodger organization eagerness to embrace all of a series of new security recommendations, among them,” increased LAPD presence” at all Dodger games, no drinking in the parking lots, improved lighting, and close security TV.

Dodger owner Frank McCourt announced the new security measures would be in place for the next home game, Thursday, April 14. McCourt called the recent attack on San Francisco Giant fan, Bryan Stow, at Dodger Stadium “criminal behavior” and not the actions of true Dodger fans.

Stow was viciously beaten after the season opening game between the Giants and Dodgers on Thursday, March 31. The paramedic and father of two suffered a brain injury and is in a coma. A $100,000 reward is being offered in the case involving two male suspects. The Los Angeles Times website has sketches of the suspects, along with more details on the new crackdown on unruly fans and troublemakers.

Also, the Dodgers put out a press release today about a fundraiser for Bryan Stow and his children, on Monday, April 11. Several organizations will be on hand to help collect donations at a “drive-through” event for a Bryan Stow trust fund. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in parking lot 1 of Dodger Stadium.

The Bryan Stow Fund is accepting donations at www.sfpcu.org as well.

California Lottery Mega Millions logo

A lot of money on the line in the Mega Millions lottery draw tonight. The jackpot is hovering at around $44 million. In last Tuesday’s game no one picked all of the winning numbers — but one Southland player got all but the Mega Ball correct. Tuesday’s numbers: 1, 19, 20, 31, 36 and the Mega Ball 9.

That lucky SoCal Mega Millions ticket was bought at the Valero Fuel Station 1285 East Vernon Avenue in Los Angeles. The ticket is worth $598, 206.

Tonight’s Mega Millions draw is at 8 p.m.

Crime Alert: Crackdown on distracted drivers

Fronnie Lewis
April 4th, 2011

Texting behind the wheel or driving and talking on a hand-held cell phone are not just dangerous habits, they violate the law. California is sponsoring its first Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April.

Starting today, Burbank Police will be joining law enforcement agencies throughout the Los Angeles area in cracking down on texting and illegal cell phone use by motorists.

“We take the issue of distracted driving very seriously,” said Burbank  police Chief Scott LaChasse in a press release. “Cell phone use and texting while driving is such a serious concern that we are putting officers on the road with a zero tolerance approach to these violations. Is that text message of cell phone call really worth $159?”

That’s right, the first ticket will cost you $159 and as much as $279 for repeat offenses. It’s a smarter move to pull over to the side of the road and stop, before texting or picking up that cell phone.

Pioneer journalist Belva Davis brings book tour to Southland

Fronnie Lewis
February 26th, 2011

Book cover for "Never in my Wildest Dreams A Black Woman's Life in Journalism

Award-winning journalist/author, Belva Davis, is in the Southland this weekend for a number of meet-and-greet-and-book signing events. As Black History month draws to a close, this is an incredible opportunity to meet a trailblazer, Davis, the first African American female reporter/anchor in the West, who covered some of the most significant news stories of the past few decades while fighting racism and sexism.

In her memoir, “Never in My Wildest Dreams: A Black Woman’s Life in Journalism,” Davis describes her fascinating journey, from a difficult childhood to a broken first marriage to becoming one of the top TV journalists in the country. It’s an excellent read without rancor or bitterness. Entertaining, insightful, humorous at times, and engaging from the first to the very last page.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I have to say I am a long-time fan of Davis. Growing up in the Bay Area, I watched Davis with awe and admiration on the small screen as she reported the news and co-anchored a newscast at KPIX-TV in San Francisco.  The relationship became both personal and professional, when later I got my first real broadcast news job in the KPIX newsroom.

“Never in My Wildest Dreams” is an important book. It should be read by all who enjoy the against-the-odds triumph of determination and talent over adversity. Here’s a list of upcoming Southland appearances by Davis.

Sunday, February 27, 2011 — 7 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Monday, February 28, 2011 — 7 p.m.

Blake Griffin how did ya get so fly? The Clipper power forward stunned the crowd at Staples Center last night, and gained all kind of props and kudos, when he leaped over a car during an amazing slam dunk.

Griffin won the NBA’s 26th Annual Slam Dunk Contest. The NBA all-star pumped up his own celebrity and add some magic to the struggling Los Angeles Clippers with that incredible dunk. Oh, and Griffin donated his trophy to the family of a friend who recently died.  What a guy!

The Los Angeles Times website has more photos and a terrific column by Bill Plaschke on Griffin’s mind-blowing dunk.

The Grammys rock Staples Center

The Staples Center in L.A. got turned out by some entertainers who came to blow the roof off the place at the 53rd Grammy Awards ceremony. First time Grammy performer, Rolling Stones lead singer, Mick Jagger, was one of the veteran who took to the stage, along with the young stars like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Eminem.

Rihanna and Eminem’s duet, “Love the Way You Lie” is on his disc “Recovery,” which won for best rap album. The country group, Lady Antebellum, won record and song of the year for the tearjerker, “Need You Now.” It’s an emotional song– but not a great one. However, country music –particularly — pop/country — has become the new rock-n-roll.

Los Angeles times has more on the shocking winners of the top awards, the performances, the red carpet fashions, and how the TV censors were kept busy during the broadcast. And a ton of photos, too!

Lakers lose some magic

Fronnie Lewis
October 19th, 2010

the logo for the Los Angeles Lakers

Former Laker Superstar, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, is no longer part owner of the NBA champion Lakers.  Sad, but true. Yesterday, the team announced Johnson had sold his ownership share to Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, a 25-year season-ticket holder, local businessman, and philanthropist.

Johnson reportedly bought his share for $10 million in 1994. No official word on what it sold for, but according to the Los Angeles Times, Johnson’s stake was about 4.5 percent. Last December, Forbes magazine listed the Lakers as the NBA’s most valuable franchise at $607 million. So that means Magic’s share would be worth around $28 million.

Magic apparently wants to join a group of investors onterested buying the Detroit Pistons. Magic has strong ties to Michigan; he grew up in Lansing and  played for Michigan State.

No matter, Magic is forever linked to the purple and gold. In a press released posted on the team website, Magic emphasized his commitment to the Lakers: ”I am truly humbled to have been a Lakers player for 13 years and an owner for over 10 years. I thank Dr. Buss from the deepest part of my heart and soul for allowing me such an incredible opportunity. I will continue to work alongside Dr. Buss, Jeanie Buss and Mitch Kupchak in their efforts to continually build and maintain the best NBA franchise in the league. This was a bittersweet business decision made on behalf of my family and myself, and I want to assure all the wonderful and loyal Lakers fans that my decision will in no way affect my dedication and support for the Los Angeles Lakers. I am and will always be a Laker for life.”

Follow the Lakers on this blog. Check the middle column for updates on the players and the franchise.

Lady Gaga wore the most outrageous outfit to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles last night. The 24-year-old singer went on to win 8 awards – a record for the VMAs.  However, the appearances by Kanye West and Taylor Swift probably produced the most drama. Last year, West interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video to declare the award should have gone to Beyoncé.

People has the drama, the performances, the fashion, and more from the VMAs here.

Action flicks dominate weekend Box Office

Movie poster for Resident Evil:Afterlife 3D

George Clooney got drop kicked to the curb and beyond by a female action hero over the weekend.  “Resident Evil:Afterlife 3D” starring Milla Jovovich annihilated the competition with a debut estimated at $27.7 million — to become the new number one film in the country.

In this fourth installment of the “Resident Evil” franchise, Milla Jovovich plays Alice Clones who hooks up with some survivors in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles. The cast includes Ali Larter and Wentworth Miller.

The action drama “Takers” captured second place with around $6 million. Last week’s top film, Clooney’s “The American” managed only third with about $5.8 million, followed by the actioner “Machete” with  $4.2 million and rounding out the top five, the romantic comedy, “Going the Distance” with an estimated $3.8 million.

Lottery officials waiting for two Southland Mega Millions winners to claim their prizes

Fronnie Lewis
September 4th, 2010

Two lucky lottery winners could have a whole lot more green in their bank accounts  and wallets to celebrate the Labor Day Holiday. If only they had cashed in those winning lottery tickets.

California Lottery officials say there’s a Mega Millions ticket purchased about a month ago at the Lorena Market, 3360 East Olympic Boulevard in L.A. that has all but the winning Mega Ball number. That ticket is worth $197,117.

Another lottery ticket bought for the May 4 draw at the El Mexicano Market, 6625 South Avalon Boulevard in L.A., also matched all the numbers except the Mega Ball. That one has a value of $179,428. Now time is running out for the owner or owners of that ticket. Winners have 180 days from the date of the draw to claim their prizes. This ticket will expire on December first.

By the way, the Mega Millions jackpot is growing again. It stands at $25 million for next Tuesday’s game.

Fronnie Lewis
August 30th, 2010

It’s been a really hot summer for Los Angeles and I’m not referring to the weather. The largest online dating site, Match.com, reports its figures show more singles than ever used its dating services to find love this summer, according to a PR Newswire press release. A pioneer in online dating, Match.com launched in 1995 and now has dating sites in 25 countries.

Match.com says the number of its clients actively involved, from June -August,  in the dating scene was up 33.5% over 2009. Also, the company released its top 10  hottest U.S. cities for online dating this summer and L.A. was number three!

  1. Miami, FL
  2. New York, NY
  3. Los Angeles, CA
  4. Chicago, IL
  5. Washington, DC
  6. Dallas, TX
  7. San Diego, CA
  8. Phoenix, AZ
  9. Boston, MA
  10. Houston, TX

Additional cities where Match.com says singles are actively turning to the Internet for help in finding a date are Providence RI, Philadelphia, PA, Minneapolis, MN, Pittsburgh, PA, and San Jose, CA.

Oh, if you having found the right hook-up yet, Match.com suggests you take advantage of Labor Day, which it says is historically one of the most active online dating days.

News Bits: President Obama’s visit, Casting for “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” & Box Office numbers

Fronnie Lewis
August 16th, 2010

President Obama raises $1 million & snarls traffic in Southland

It happens almost every time a U.S. President visits the Southland. The bad traffic situation gets worse. That’s what occurred today, when President Barack Obama dropped in for one of those high-ticket priced Hollywood -type fundraisers.

Obama reportedly raised $1 million dollars for the Democrats and the ire of some Southlanders over the traffic problems caused by his visit. Nice report and photo on the Los Angeles Times website.

Actress Rooney Mara has won one of the most sought after roles in Hollywood. Columbia Pictures announced today that Mara has been selected to star in the film version of  Stieg Larsson’s mystery blockbuster, “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” and the other two adaptations in The Millennium Trilogy. David Fincher will direct.

Since being published in the U.S., “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” has sold over 5 million copies. The Millennium Trilogy has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, according to a PR Newswire press release.

All three books, including “The Girl Who Played With Fire” and “THe Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest” currently are at the top of the New York Times Best Sellers List.  The  Millennium Triology is considered a literary phenomenon.

Also, Actor Daniel Craig is set to star in “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.” Deadline.com has more on the casting and the upcoming productions.

Sylvester Stallone king of the Box Office

Actor and Filmmaker, Sylvester Stallone, is hot again. Stallone co-wrote, directed, and starred in the number one film in country right now, “The Expendables.” The action flick about a group of mercenaries out to take down a South American dictator, debuted over the weekend with a winning $34.8 million.  The cast includes Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, and Jet Li as well.

“Eat Pray Love,” the move version of Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling memoir about her adventures traveling the world, opened in second place with $23 million. Julia Roberts stars, but that was not enough for this chick flick to win the race to number one.

The action-comedy, “The Other Guys” grabbed third with  $17.4 million, the sci-fi thriller, “Inception” earned $11.4 million for fourth and rounding out the top five, the new action-comedy, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World ” with $10.6 million. Based on a graphic novel, “Scott Pilgrim”  is about a 20-something musician who’s life chances dramatically when he falls for a mysterious woman. Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead star.

Mega Millions jackpot climbs to $53 million

Fronnie Lewis
August 4th, 2010

More greenbacks got stuffed into the Mega Millions jackpot, after no one matched all of the winning numbers in Tuesday’s drawing.  The lucky numbers were 4, 13, 20, 22, 56, and the Mega Ball 32. However, there’s still a ticket from last night’s game that’s got a lot of dollar signs hanging on it.

One ticket sold at the Lorena Market, 3360 East Olympic Boulevard in Los Angeles, matched all but the Mega Ball. That ticket is worth $197, 117. Meanwhile, the jackpot has grown to $53 million. The next drawing is this Friday, August 6, at 8 p.m.

Big moments at the 2010 Grammy Awards

The artistry of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, loomed large over the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, Sunday night, January 31. A nice star-studded musical tribute to the late superstar was followed by the appearance of his two oldest children on stage to accept the entertainer’s lifetime achievement award.

During his life, MJ was criticized for just about everything he did — including being a parent. However, those two adorable kids, Paris,11, and Prince Michael,12, would make any parent proud. Prince Michael declared they would carry on with their father’s love crusade. ”We will continue to spread his message and help the world.”

It was a huge night for Beyoncé as well, who won an incredible six Grammys among them:  best female pop vocal performance for “Halo,” best female R&B vocal performance, and song of the year for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it). The song of the year award is for songwriting. Yes, Beyoncé is not only a talented performer, but a skilled writer as well. The singer co-wrote, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it),” a very catchy ditty that folks were humming and singing for months. I dug it, too.

Also, Beyoncé made Grammy history. She’s the first female to take home a half-dozen Grammys in one night.

Rising country star Taylor Swift was not far behind Beyoncé in the Grammy count. Swift took home four Grammys, including the night’s biggest award for album of the year for “Fearless.”  Swift won trophies for best country album, best country song, and best female country vocal performance for ”White Horse.” Swift is multi-talented as well. She co-wrote, “White Horse.”

Fellow “American Idol” alumnus and country star, Carrie Underwood, did not leave the Los Angeles’ Staples Center empty handed. Underwood and Randy Travis won the best country collaboration with vocals award for “I Told You So.” This Grammy goes to the artists who don’t usually perform together. Underwood and Travis were a perfect match for this bittersweet ballad. It’s one of the best duo performances in country, pop, or whatever. The song is one of my favorites from 2009.

16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards winners celebrated

Fronnie Lewis
January 24th, 2010

Several of the winners at the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony in the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center last night are now serious front runners to collect an Oscar this year. Sandra Bullock took home the Actor statuette for outstanding performance by an actress in a motion picture for her role in the football drama, “The Blind Side.” Jeff Bridges won best actor for his lead role in the film “Crazy Heart.”  Also, Mo’Nique won the most votes from her fellow actors for her supporting performance in the movie drama, “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.” All three won Golden Globes for those roles, too.

Christoph Waltz picked up the award for outstanding male supporting actor for his performance in the Nazi drama, “Inglourious Basterds.” He can sit that award next to the Golden Globe he won for the same performance, last Sunday. Oh, it was a big night for “Inglourious Basterds,” which won the trophy for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture as well.

So I would be very surprised, no, downright shocked, if Bullock, Bridges, Mo’Nique, and Waltz don’t hear their names mentioned on Tuesday, February 2, when the Academy Awards nominees are announced.

Outstanding performance by a male actor in a television movie or miniseries went to Kevin Bacon for his role in “Taking Chance.” Drew Barrymore won the outstanding performance by a female in a television movie or miniseries for “Grey Gardens.” Earlier, Bacon and Barrymore picked up Golden Globes for the same performances.

Best selling author E.Lynn Harris dies suddenly at 54

Fronnie Lewis
July 27th, 2009

Everette “E” Lynn Harris (June 20, 1955 – July 23, 2009)

Over the weekend, a number of tributes and obituaries for the late writer E. Lynn Harris, a pioneer in popular black fiction.

Last week during a book tour for his latest novel, “Basketball Jones,” the bestselling author became ill at a Beverly Hills hotel. Harris died last Thursday night, July 23, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Harris self-published his first novel, “Invisible Life” and sold it out of the trunk of car, until he got a deal with big time publisher Doubleday in 1994. Harris created rich plots about the glamorous and complex lives of African-American professionals, both straight and gay. Harris is credited with being one of the first writers of mainstream fiction to portray male black characters living on the “down low,” in relationships with women, but secretively dating men.

Nine of Harris’ novels have hit the New York Times bestseller list, including “Just as I am: A Novel” (1994), “And This Too Shall Pass” (1996), “If This World Were Mine” (1997), and “I Say A Little Prayer” (2006). More than four million of Harris’ books are in print.

Harris was 54. So far, the cause of death has not been released.

A fantastic send-off for superstar Michael Jackson !

Fronnie Lewis
July 8th, 2009

This is the cover of the program for the public Michael Jackson memorial service held at Staples Center in Los Angeles yesterday. A ton of photos of the event and the fans are on the Los Angeles Times website . Thousands of lucky ticket holders joined MJ’s friends, celebrities, and family members for the emotional and musically charged memorial inside Staples, while millions of other folks watched or listened to a live broadcast.

Performances by Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, Brooke Shields, Jennifer Hudson, and Usher made it an event to remember. However, Michael Jackson’s tearful 11-year-old daughter, Paris, probably paid the icon the best tribute when she said: “Ever since I was born, daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. And I just want to say that I love him so much.”
