Photo Gallery: What a catch!

A billboard creates an interesting effect as Los Angeles Dodgers Andre Ethier makes the catch at Dodger Stadium last Thursday, April 2. Also, the right fielder hit a run-scoring triple and homered in the eighth inning to help the Dodgers dust the Angels 6-to-2 in that exhibition game.

Spring is here: more sunny skies and warmer temps ahead

Two walkers chat and keep up a brisk pace on Olive Avenue in Burbank recently. I’m seeing more and more exercisers pounding the street pavement and sidewalks as the temperatures rise. For the next few days, the highs are expected to be in the mid-70s to the 80s here. So I’ll probably be seeing even more folks outside, reviving up their sluggish or dormant exercise programs. Just like I’m doing.

The calendar says winter, but the weather feels like spring already. A jogger and her canine companion enjoy a run along Kenneth Road in a Burbank hillside neighborhood recently.

Working off those holiday pounds in sunny California

Fronnie Lewis
January 10th, 2009

FLLewis/A Writer’s Groove — Burbank

Now is definitely the time to kick that sluggish or dormant workout plan into high gear. The holiday noshing is over; the business of working off those extra pounds is well underway for a lot of folks. I was out this week, huffing and puffing my way through the Burbank foothills along with other walkers and joggers.

This morning, when I stepped outside it was around 45 in Burbank. I thought that was a bit chilly. Still, today’s weather forecast is for sunny clear skies and temperatures in the mid-70s. Tomorrow, we may be up into the 80s in Burbank. Oh, yeah! This is my idea of winter. Quite a difference from Orr, Minnesota, the coldest spot in the nation this morning with a low of 31 below zero. The high there today is only expected to rise to 6-11 degrees above zero. Burrr!

Living in the Southland has its disadvantages like earthquakes, wildfires, and crazy freeway drivers, but on a January day like today — the negatives don’t seem to be that big of a deal to me.

A picture perfect day for the 2009 Rose Parade

Fronnie Lewis
January 1st, 2009

Gary Friedman/Los Angeles Times

Today under clear sunny skies around a million people lined Pasadena streets to see the 120th annual Tournament of Roses Parade roll by. Millions more watched the floral spectacular on television.

“Hats Off To Entertainment,” was the theme of this year’s parade. ”Bollywood Dreams,” a salute to the booming film Industry in India, won the Lathrop K. Leishman Trophy for most beautiful float from a non-commercial sponsor. So three cheers for the folks living in nearby Sierra Madre and the Sierra Madre Float Association.

The Grand Marshal of the parade was actress and popular “Dancing With the Stars” contestant, 82-year-old Cloris Leachman.

Christmas time!

Fronnie Lewis
December 24th, 2008

FLLewis/A Writer’s Groove — Burbank

 SOMEDAY AT CHRISTMAS

Someday at Christmas men won’t be boys
Playing with bombs like kids play with toys
One warm December our hearts will see
A world where men are free

Someday at Christmas there’ll be no wars
When we have learned what Christmas is for
When we have found what life’s really worth
There’ll be peace on earth

Someday all our dreams will come to be
Someday in a world where men are free
Maybe not in time for you and me
But someday at Christmastime

Lyrics by Ronald N. Miller and Bryan Wells. The song was first performed by Stevie Wonder on his album “Someday at Christmas” (1967).  It has become a holiday classic.

UPDATE: December 25th, 2008

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”  Luke 2:8-11 NIV Bible

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!  Philippians 4:4 NIV Bible

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.  John 3:16-17 NIV Bible
