Heated debate over Writers Guild tentative contract agreement

Fronnie Lewis
March 21st, 2011

The debate is heating up over the new Writers Guild tentative agreement with producers. Yesterday the negotiators for the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers reached the tentative agreement after only about two and a half weeks of talking. The producers must have offered a juicy deal with plenty of perks and money for the writers to jump so quick at an offer. That’s not what the critics are saying about this contract deal.

Today the Writers Guild West posted an announcement about the tentative agreement on its website.  However, the debate over the agreement began yesterday — and Nikki Finke over on deadline.com has an interesting post on the contract negotiations, the players involved, and the e-mail sent out yesterday by the WGAW. Also, that post has nearly 100 comments about the tentative agreement.  Check it out here.

“Battle: LA” wins shootout at box office

Fronnie Lewis
March 13th, 2011

Battle:Los Angeles movie poster

The new gritty sci-fi action flick, “Battle: Los Angeles,” fought its way to the top of the box office this weekend.  “Battled: LA” debuted with an estimated $36 million to become the number one movie in the country.

Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriquez, and pop singer Ne-Yo are in the cast of  ”Battle: LA,” which is about a marine platoon that goes up against invading aliens in the City of Angels.

Last week’s top film, Johnny Depp’s computer-animated western-comedy, ”Rango,” slipped to second place with around $23 million. ‘ The new take on folk tale classic, “Red Riding Hood,” did not generate the kind of opening expected — by landing in third with an estimated $14.1 million. The dark fantasy stars Amanda Seyfried as a woman living in a town terrorized by a werewolf.

The thriller, “The Adjustment Bureau,” claimed fourth with just about $11.4 million, and rounding out the top five, the new Disney animation, “Mars Needs Moms,” with an estimated $6.8 million. Produced on a budget reported to be at least $150 million, the film is considered a box office bomb. “Mars Needs Moms” stars Seth Green and Joan Cusack, in a story of a young boy who is out to save his mother from Martians. It is based on a book by cartoonist, Berkeley Breathed.

Hollywood spec script market heats up

Fronnie Lewis
March 12th, 2011

A screenplay

The spec script market appears to be catching fire and that’s a good thing for all of Hollywood. More scripts that sell, more production, and more jobs.  Last night, Sony Pictures came out the victor in a lively auction for the spec script, “Agent OX,” by Daniel Kunka, according to deadline.com

Neal Moritz’s Original Pictures will produce “Agent OX.” Moritz is the prolific producer behind “The Green Hornet,” “I Am Legend,” and “Battle: Los Angeles” — opening this weekend.

Several major studios and production companies were involved in the bidding. The sci-fi action screenplay revolves around a human spy living on another planet who must go into action to save Earth from an invasion by the aliens. The script sold for mid-six figures.  Deadline has more on the auction, the script, and some interesting comments from some of the folks in town who say they’ve read this hot property.

Some of the other spec screenplays that got snatched up this week include “The Last Witness” by Stefan Jaworski, “The Nameless” by Chris Bullett, and “Monsters of the Midway” by Jeff Lowell.

ShowBiz Bits: Charlie Sheen files $100 million lawsuit, book deal for Bill Cosby, and Hollywood script news

Fronnie Lewis
March 10th, 2011

Another twist in the Charlie Sheen saga

logo for TV show "Two and a Half Men"

There are more strange twists in the real-life saga of troubled-outspoken actor, Charlie Sheen, than most TV shows. This morning, Sheen’s attorney filed a $100 million lawsuit against Warner Bros. and “Two and a Half Men” co-creator/executive producer, Chuck Lorre.

The suit comes days after Warner Bros. fired Sheen from the highly rated TV sitcom. The Wrap has the termination letter, a copy of Sheen’s complaint, and more here.

Book deal for actor/comedian/author, Bill Cosby

Entertainer Bill Cosby has a new book coming out later this year, in November. “I Didn’t Ask To Be Born, But I’m Glad I Was,” touches on Cosby’s dating experience, misbehaving grandkids, and his views on God and the Bible, according to the publishing site, Galleycat.

Cosby has written several books including, “Fatherhood” and “Cosbyology.”

Script news: screenwriter selected for reboot of “Robocop”

Deadline.com is reporting that Josh Zetumer has been hired by MGM to script a new version of the 1987 sci-fi action hit, “Robocop.” There were two sequels in 1990 and 1993, but none did as well as the first movie at the box office. Zetumer is a hot screenwriter right now. He got his big break with the spy thriller screenplay, “Infiltrator.”  More here.

The Oscars: Winners, awards, and those fabulous celebrity gowns

Fronnie Lewis

Photo: Liz O. Baylen/Los Angeles Times -- Actress Halle Berry posed on the Oscar red carpet at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood February 27, 2011

As expected, “The King’s Speech” captured the best picture Oscar at the 83rd Academy Awards ceremony at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood tonight. The surprise, the historic British drama was nominated for a record 12 awards, but only won four. Along with best picture, Colin Firth grabbed best actor, Tom Hooper best director, and David Seidler walked off with the best original screenplay trophy.

Aaron Sorkin took home the best adapted screenplay statuette for the Facebook movie, ”The Social Network.” Best actress went to Natalie Portman for the dance thriller, “Black Swan,” best supporting actress to Melissa Leo for her role in the sports drama, “The Fighter,” and Christian Bale got the best supporting actor for “The Fighter” as well.  A full list of the winners is on the Academy of  Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Oscars website.

The Los Angeles Times has more on the winners, the awards, and photos — including some nice snapshots of the fashions on the red carpet. I admit it: I checked out   the celebrity fashions at the glittery affair. The temperature in Hollywood during the red carpet parade of stars was in the 50s — still springtime colors and skin-baring designs were the norm. My favorite: Actress Halle Berry’s stunning champagne-colored sparkly gown with ruffled train by Marchesa.  Hollywood glamour definitely on display at the Oscars.

Pioneer journalist Belva Davis brings book tour to Southland

Fronnie Lewis
February 26th, 2011

Book cover for "Never in my Wildest Dreams A Black Woman's Life in Journalism

Award-winning journalist/author, Belva Davis, is in the Southland this weekend for a number of meet-and-greet-and-book signing events. As Black History month draws to a close, this is an incredible opportunity to meet a trailblazer, Davis, the first African American female reporter/anchor in the West, who covered some of the most significant news stories of the past few decades while fighting racism and sexism.

In her memoir, “Never in My Wildest Dreams: A Black Woman’s Life in Journalism,” Davis describes her fascinating journey, from a difficult childhood to a broken first marriage to becoming one of the top TV journalists in the country. It’s an excellent read without rancor or bitterness. Entertaining, insightful, humorous at times, and engaging from the first to the very last page.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I have to say I am a long-time fan of Davis. Growing up in the Bay Area, I watched Davis with awe and admiration on the small screen as she reported the news and co-anchored a newscast at KPIX-TV in San Francisco.  The relationship became both personal and professional, when later I got my first real broadcast news job in the KPIX newsroom.

“Never in My Wildest Dreams” is an important book. It should be read by all who enjoy the against-the-odds triumph of determination and talent over adversity. Here’s a list of upcoming Southland appearances by Davis.

New book out today by television trailblazer Belva Davis

Fronnie Lewis
February 1st, 2011
Book cover for "Never in my Wildest Dreams A Black Woman's Life in Journalism

It’s not easy being the first to break through social and professional barriers, especially back in the turbulent sixties. Nevertheless, someone has to step up, take the risks, suffer the insults and the rejections, and Belva Davis did that to become the first black female television journalist/anchor in the western United States. Davis tells her incredible story of rising from the projects of Oakland to become an award winning television reporter, known around the world, in her new book out today.

“Never in My Wildest Dreams: A Black Woman’s Life in Journalism,” was written with Bay Area journalist, Vicki Haddock. In this memoir, Davis looks back on her incredible career, which includes covering such important stories as the 1964 Republican Convention, where she was verbally and physically assaulted, to the murders of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, to the outbreak of the AIDS epidemic to the 9-11 terrorist attacks and to the historic election of Barack Obama as President of the United States in 2008.

Davis continues to observe and cover some of the major stories of the day for one of the nation’s top PBS stations, KQED.

Along her journey, Davis has traveled the world and met cultural and political icons like Frank Sinatra, Malcolm X, Alex Haley, Black Panther leader Huey Newton, and Cuba’s Fidel Castro. Entertainer Bill Cosby says this about the pioneer journalist: “Belva Davis was someone who sustained us, who made us proud …  She was the first woman of color that many viewers came to know and trust, and she met that challenge with integrity and dignity and grace.”

I went from a proud fan watching Davis on television to a young journalist inspired and mentored by her. In fact, a co-worker at a station in San Jose, my first job after college, recommended me to Davis and that led to my first real television newsroom job at KPIX in San Francisco. I moved up quickly from production assistant to writer and to producer of the noon news, where one of my co-anchors was the legendary Belva Davis. In a short time, I was off to Southern California for a position as a newswriter/occasional field producer at KNBC-TV. I never forgot the lessons learned working with Davis at KPIX.

That talk- show- diva- now- network-mogul, Oprah Winfrey, launched her own cable television network on New Year’s Day. One million viewers turned in, according to deadline.com

You can get an idea of the kind of programming Oprah is offering by visiting her OWN website. This is a terrific looking site, packed with all sorts of stuff — including hundreds of comments from viewers and Oprah fans about the new network. Check it out here.

New Year’s weekend Box Office

A container of popcorn and a movie reel.

New Year’s weekend Box Office turned out to be very much like Christmas weekend –  slow and very unexciting. Attendance was done at movie theaters during those two weekends not because of the bad weather, but most liekly due to the weak slate of films — not one in the top five is a real “gotta see” type film or blockbuster.

The comedy sequel, “Little Fockers,” held onto the number spot with a weekend tally of $25.7 million. The western-remake with awards buzz, “True Grit,” held remained in second place with $24.4 million.

The fantasy,”Tron:Legacy,” landed in third again with $18.7 million, followed by the animation, “Yogi Bear,” in fourth with $12.3 million, and fifth earning $10.2 million, “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.”

Holiday Highlights: “Twas the Night Before Christmas”

Photo: Pete Souza/White House -- First Lady Michelle Obama reads "Twas the Night Before Christmas" to children at the National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony in Washington DC on December 9, 2010

”Twas the Night Before Christmas,” also called “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” has become a holiday tradition for young and old. There is some debate over – was it Clement Clarke Moore or Henry Livingston, Jr. who originally wrote the poem back in the 1800s. No matter, the wonderful words are timeless and conjure up the magic and hope of Christmas Eve.

There are many variations of the famous poem. Here’s one version:

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

“Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!

Showbiz bits: Blogger/tweeter gets TV deal, Golden Globe nominations, Box Office update, & List of hot screenplays in Hollywood

Blogger/tweeter gets TV project gig

showbiz clapper board clip art

Blogger/tweeter and mother of three, Kelly Oxford, has been writing for years — but now it’s really paying off for her. Oxford’s witty tweets and interesting blog posts, got her a deal to write a sitcom series pilot called, “Mother of All Something.”

Now CBS has picked up the project for development with actress Jessica Alba and Jhoni Marchinko, a former-writer for the TV series, “Will & Grace” attached. The CBS comedy, “$#*! My Dad Says,” is based on a Twitter feed. The Network reportedly has several other Internet-based projects in the works.  More about Oxford and this deal here.

2010 Golden Globe nominations

Golden Globe Awards graphic

The Hollywood awards season is in full swing. Yesterday, the period film, “The King’s Speech,” received seven Golden Globe nominations, the most of any motion picture. It’s about Briain’s King George VI  and his struggle to overcome a stuttering problem.

Two other movie dramas, “The Fighter,” and “The Social Network,” got six nominations. The sci-fi actioner, “Inception,” the psychological thriller, ” Black Swan,” and the comedy, “The Kids are All Right,” each were handed four nominations by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Even though the Golden Globes get a lot of flak for being more about the glitter than real talent — it frequently selects Academy Awards contenders and sometimes even picks Oscar winners.

The 68th Annual Golden Globes Awards ceremony is set for January 16, 2011 on NBC.

The third installment of  “The Chronicles of Narnia” is still king at the domestic Box Office, after earning the crown over the weekend with a haul of $24 million. “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” rolled right over another newbie, “The Tourist.”

“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” is based on the third book in the classic children’s book series by C.S. Lewis. In this version, the King of Narnia and his brave team must rescue seven lords in order to save his country from an evil mist. The 3D flick earned $1.6 million on Monday and $1.7 million on Tuesday to remain the number one film in the country.

Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp are in second place. Over the weekend their romantic/thriller, “The Tourist,” managed only $16.4 million.  On Monday, it made $1.3 million and did a little better on Tuesday, $1.6 million.  In “The Tourist” Depp plays an American visiting Italy who meets a mysterious woman, Jolie.  “The Tourist” is a remake of the French action/thriller “Anthony Zimmer” (2005).

The animated movie, “Tangled,” landed in third with $14.3 million, followed by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1″ in fourth  with $8.4 million and rounding out the top five, “Unstoppable” with $3.7 million.

Author Charlotte Carter is a mother of two and grandmother of five, but you’d never say she’s over the hill. Not with the activities Carter is involved in. The talented SoCal writer and ardent volunteer, has had more than 50 romance, mystery, and inspirational novels published.

A few years back, I was the moderator for a writers/authors group in Burbank and Carter was a guest speaker a couple of times. An experienced workshop facilitator, Carter has  participated in writers’ events at the Burbank library as well.

Carter’s newest book, “Montana Hearts,” hits store shelves today. It’s an inspirational romance about a transplant recipient who meets and falls in love with a rancher whose late wife donated the heart that saved her life.

Controversy over Amazon’s new big bucks contest for filmmakers and screenwriters

Fronnie Lewis
November 24th, 2010

A screenplay

A new online contest is offering more than two million in prizes to wannabe screenwriters and filmmakers. Launched last week Amazon Studios , is backed by online retailer, Amazon.com, which has a first look deal with Warner Bros. The Amazon Studios’ website claims it,”… will award  a combined $2.7 million in our first year’s worth of monthly and annual contests for the best scripts and movies. There is no charge to participate.”

If you are eager to break into Hollywood, this sounds like a terrific deal. But is it really? A lot of debate on the Internet — specifically–over on Deadline.com, where there’s a post about some Hollywood screenwriters warning newbies to beware of this project. Also, more than 100 comments on this post — some from writers who are desperate to get a deal and are willing to give up important rights to get it. This will be a dilemma for some writers and filmmakers — a no brainer for others.

Former President George W. Bush back in the spotlight

Fronnie Lewis
November 10th, 2010

cover of George W. Bush's new book

Even if you disagree with his politics or hold him accountable for leaving the country with two wars, a huge deficit, and in a financial/economical meltdown, Ex-President, George W. Bush, is still an intriguing study. The 43rd president is on the talk show circuit promoting his new book, “Decision Points.” Apparently the president is doing a bang up job.

Today “Decision Points,” Bush’s look back at some critical decisions in his life and presidency, is number one on the Barnes&Noble and Amazon.com websites. Bush’s book is getting some pretty good ratings and comments from readers and reviewers on both sites. Also, the Los Angeles Times has an insightful review  on “Decision Points” here.

In his book, Bush sums up his presidency this way: “History can debate the decisions I made, the policies I chose, and the tools I left behind. But there can be no debate about one fact: After the nightmare of September 11, America went seven and a half years without another successful terrorist attack on our soil. If I had to summarize my most meaningful accomplishment as president in one sentence, that would be it.”

Ultimately, history will determine the success or failure of the George W. Bush years. Until then, the debate is further stimulated by the ex-president’s vocal assessment of his administration and his memoir, “Decision Points.”

Best selling author looking for a few good co-authors

Book Cover of "One for the Money Book" by Janet Evanovich

Publishing superstar, Janet Evanovich, has made a bundle off  of her popular Stephanie Plum mysteries, and is now out to  hook up with some fresh talented co-authors.

Number 17 in the Plum series titled, “Smokin’ Seventeen,” is due out next year. The wacky world of former lingerie buyer turned bounty hunter, Stephanie Plum, is headed to the big screen as well. Katherine Heigl reportedly has signed on to play Stephanie in the movie version of the first book, “One for the Money.”

Evanovich has written more than 40 books. Recently, she landed a huge multi-million dollar deal with Random House. So Evanovich is not hurting for money, nevertheless, she is eager to revive a co-author program she established several years ago.

In a recent interview with  Media Bistro, Evanovich described the program this way: “We would like to have, maybe three or four co-authors that we’re working with and bringing them out in hard cover. It’s one of those situations that if you find the right person, everybody wins. There are tons of really good writers out there, but for one reason or another, they just have not had the support that allowed them to build audiences. So, for these writers out there, it gives them an opportunity to get a much larger market. If somebody’s interested in being part of our co-author program, they should contact my son, Peter Evanovich or they can send me a letter. My post office box is on all my book covers.”

Maybe the New Jersey born writer has not forgotten her own struggle. It took her 10 years to get published.  When asked in a Barnes & Noble interview for advice for writers looking for that big break, Evanovich said: “Don’t give up, continue to grow, eat some Cheez Doodles and drink some beer.” Hmm, I would of course throw in some chocolate, either way, it  sounds like a good plan.

Write a novel in a month — thousands are trying to do it in November!

Fronnie Lewis
November 1st, 2010

National Novel Writing Month logo

Writers around the world are pounding computer keys or scribbling as fast as they can in notebooks — as part of the annual Write A Novel in a Month project. It kicked off today and writers have until November 30 to produce 50,000 words — that’s a short novel of 175 pages. Last year, 165,000 writers reportedly took the challenge and 30,000 were victorious.

This popular creative writing venture is run by a non-profit, which has a host of sponsors this year including Amazon.com. The word count of 50,000 words is a lot, but I know writers who have taken this challenge and achieved that goal.

Organizers admit the project  emphasizes persistence and output, rather than the details of the novel writing craft. However, for those who have been procrastinating about writing “that novel” this is consider a good “kick-in-the-pants” to get cranking.

More details and a ton of support and encouragement here.  By the way, you have to be patient, the  National Novel Writing Month website is getting heavy traffic today so it’s a bit sluggish.
