This is the cover of the program for the public Michael Jackson memorial service held at Staples Center in Los Angeles yesterday. A ton of photos of the event and the fans are on the Los Angeles Times website . Thousands of lucky ticket holders joined MJ’s friends, celebrities, and family members for the emotional and musically charged memorial inside Staples, while millions of other folks watched or listened to a live broadcast.

Performances by Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, Brooke Shields, Jennifer Hudson, and Usher made it an event to remember. However, Michael Jackson’s tearful 11-year-old daughter, Paris, probably paid the icon the best tribute when she said: “Ever since I was born, daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. And I just want to say that I love him so much.”

One of the most poignant moments for me was the opening of the service. While a choral group sang, “Soon, very soon, we are going to see the king,” Michael’s brothers rolled in his gold casket covered with a mass of red flowers.

The minute they were seen, the crowd rose silently in respect for the King of Pop.

I’m at an age where you wouldn’t expect me to have loved Jackson’s music, but one evening I happened on a televised Motown show and saw him sing and do the moon walk. Ever after, that creative genius had a piece of my admiring, musical heart.

    Dee Ann,

The Michael Jackson memorial service had so many great moments. I had lunch with a friend today who said only in Hollywood could such a magical event be pulled together in such a short period of time.

Yes, on the “Motown 25” TV special Michael Jackson made it very clear he was indeed the King of Pop. His performance was electrifying. MJ sang and danced, and moonwalked, with the kind of style and pop that no one else had ever demonstrated. It was amazing. He was an original.

I agree Dee, the memorial service was wonderful. I was moved to hear Jennifer Hudson sing “Hold Me Like the River Jordan…” What a beautiful song! “Will You Be There” is my favoriate Michael Jackson song.

My favoriate music video is “Smooth Criminal.”

I thought Jennifer Hudson gave a fabulous performance as well. I love so many of Michael Jackson’s songs. If I had to pick the one that is most special to me that would be “Remember The Time.”

And the top Michael Jackson video for me is “Thriller.”
