“Star Trek Into Darkness” opened in the number one spot last weekend and has made a ton of money at the box office. The sci-fi flick will rack up millions more during the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend. Yet, the sequel to “Star Trek” (2009) has disappointed. It’s opening weekend take of $70 million fell far short of “Iron Man 3”  opener of $174 Million!

Perhaps “Star Trek Into Darkness” fall victim to a packed May movie release schedule, as suggested by Box Office Mojo. More on “Star Trek Into Darkness” and its stumble at the box office here.

Meanwhile, the “Fast & Furious” franchise hits the big screen tomorrow with number 6. It will be interesting to see if this long in the tooth concept can still pull in big audiences. Universal Pictures is hoping the actioner will mow down the raunchy comedy “The Hangover Part 111,” and the animation “Epic,”  and then zip by “Star Trek Into Darkness” to claim the top dog crown for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
