Major movies opening this weekend
Debuting on the big screen this weekend, the comedy sequel “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2,” the animal documentary ” Monkey Kingdom,” and the low-budget, R-rated, horror flick, “Unfriended .” “Mall Cop 2” and “Unfriended” will probably do well this weekend. Nevertheless, neither is expected to match the draw of the juggernaut, “Furious 7,” which will most likely hold onto to first place at the box office for a third consecutive week. More here.
Emmy-winning local filmmaker’s two documentaries to air on PBS station
Burbank city employee/documentary filmmaker, Peter Musurlian, has a major achievement coming up. Two of his documentaries will air ,back to back, on the local PBS station KLCS, Sunday, April 19 at 5 p.m. and Tuesday, April 21 at 8 p.m. “Historic Armenia” and “The 100-Year-Old Survivor” both focus attention on the Armenian Genocide. “Words by Ira Gershwin” opens tonight at The Colony
“Words by Ira Gershwin” is a musical play about one of the legendary Gershwin brothers. Collaborating with his brother George, the duo worked on more than 20 Broadway musicals and motion pictures. Also, the brothers won acclaim for their folk opera “Porgy and Bess” (1935).
Ira Gershwin is the lyricist behind such classic songs as “I got Rhythm” (1930), “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” (1937) “Long Ago And Far Away “(1944), and “The Man That Got Away”, (1954) . The play provides “insights and tales about his legendary collaborations,” according to a news release.
“The Aubree Sweeney Variety Show” a sellout at Big Victory Theatre
Last Saturday, “The Aubree Sweeney Variety Show” took over the Big Victory Theatre in Burbank. A sellout crowd showed up to be entertained by a talented lineup of performers. Producer Aubree Sweeney says it was huge success and another one is in the works.
