Jean Youn: Finding joy in routine tasks

Everybody has their own routine work to do. At the same time, everyone has their own special things to do. Perhaps, an ordinary person usually has routine work more than special things. What are your routine tasks? What are your special things to do today or this week?

As a cleaner, my daily routine is the repetition of almost the same things. What I do daily is more like the continuance of the same work as a wheel goes round and round. However, I have many things so special at the same time. That’s people — my customers.

Though what I do at the cleaners is humdrum work such as cleaning and pressing my customers’ clothes, however, the appearance of the clothes and their owners are very distinctive and special.

I try to become a cleaner who prays for a special and blessed day for each and every customer of mine, instead of regarding them simply as customers who drop off and pick up clothes.

Everybody leads a life while doing routine work. But I don’t think that everybody likes to do all of those routine tasks. However, we may get new strength if those routines change and if we can find special things from the routines. There’s nothing better than meeting people.

I hope that each everyday encounter continues to be special like meeting people with a bright smile.

This summer is almost over. I wish that you’ll have a very special day every day.
