“Lone Survivor” fought its way to the top of the box office over the weekend. The military action/drama debuted with $37.8 million  becoming the number one film in the U.S. That’s the second largest January opening ever. “Lone Survivor” is based on the real-life story of four Navy Seals on a covert mission in Afghanistan who must make some tough decisions when it goes wrong and they’re ambushed by the Taliban. “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and “Frozen” break records and win box office gold

  The malls and shopping centers were not the only places attracting big crowds over the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend.  A lot of folks bought tickets at movie theaters — allowing the two top films to break records and collect a ton of money. As expected, the debut of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”   exploded at the box office.The final numbers are out today and the sci-fi adventure raked in $158. 1 million, to become the number one movie in the country this week. The historical drama and Oscar contender, “Lee Daniels’ ‘The Butler,” scored domestic box office gold again this weekend. The drama, starring Oprah Winfrey and Forest Whitaker, held onto the number one spot for the second week in a row, despite challenges from a group of new films. “The Butler” appears to be expanding its audience from mostly older African Americans to younger and more diverse moviegoers. “The Butler” wins the weekend box office derby

Box office battle: Who’ll be number one this weekend?

Several new films are gunning to bump the action flick, “2 Guns,” from the number spot at the domestic box office this weekend. The sci-fi thriller, “Elysium” appears to be the front runner  to take down the Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg buddy pix. Disney takes a hit from “The Lone Ranger” flop

“The Lone Ranger” seriously under-performed movie theaters and that is going to cost Disney dearly. Since opening in the U.S. on July third, the western has made only $87 million, added to the global take — the total is $175 million. Box Office Mojo puts the production cost at $215 million and then there are those extra millions spent on promotion. Yes, in movie terms, “The Lone Ranger” is an expensive dud. How expensive? Why “Pacific Rim” was defeated by “Despicable Me 2” at the box office

As the final numbers for the weekend show, “Despicable Me 2” is still king of the domestic box office. The new big budget sci-fic actioner, “Pacific Rim” had a fan base and good reviews, but still lost steam before the weekend was over. ‘Pacific Rim”had to settle for third, behind the poorly reviewed “Grown Ups 2.” What happened? “Grown Ups 2” opens with poor reviews and better than expected performance

“Grown Ups 2” is apparently not for the mature nor anyone looking for anything but a weak story filled with bad jokes. The film is getting slammed by many reviewers including Claudia Puig over on USA Today. The first “Grown Ups” earned $162 million at the box office back in 2010. Despite the bad reviews, apparently a lot of moviegoers still want to see the sequel. Another big budget box office flop for Disney?

It looks like the executives at Disney have another supersized dud at the box office to explain. Universal’s “Despicable Me 2” owned the 4th of July weekend and scooped up an amazing $83.5 million in its debut, while Disney’s “The Lone Ranger” opened far behind with only $29.2 million. There’s chatter around town that Disney may have another big budget flop the size of its last summer bomb, “John Carter.” More on that here and here.

“Despicable Me 2” shines at theaters, “The Lone Ranger” struggles

The long Fourth of July holiday weekend is shaping up to be a biggie at the box office. Two new films are in the spotlight. Moviegoers appear to be storming the theaters to see Universal Pictures’ animated sequel “Despicable Me 2” while Disney’s stylized western “The Lone Ranger” is struggling to find an audience. Both flicks have great promotion and movie trailers. Both have received mixed reviews. The final decision will come from the ticket buying movie fans. More here.

“Monsters” win box office derby, but “The Heat” is the big story

  The colorful creatures of Disney’s “Monster University” rule the domestic box office for the second straight week. The final box offices numbers released today show “MU” pulled in $45.6 million over the weekend to hold onto first place. The two week total for the film, $170.4 million. The second place winner stole much of the spotlight from the monsters. The female cop buddy pic, “The Heat” over performed and grabbed $39 million in its debut.   The weekend box office is all about the monsters and the zombies. The battle is between the new Disney animation, “Monsters University” and Brad Pitt’s new zombie action flick, “World War Z.” And the monsters are winning.   “Man of Steel” may not have thrilled a lot of the reviewers, but the new superhero flick is getting a lot of love from movie fans. Moviegoers are still hot for the fast cars and action of “Fast & Furious 6.” The sequel held onto the number spot at the domestic box office over the weekend leaving two new films eating its dust. “Fast & Furious 6” earned an estimated $34.5 million pushing its two week domestic total to around $170 million. Box office bonanza “Fast & Furious 6 ” burned rubber all over the competition Memorial Day weekend. Not a whole lot of new moves in this sequel, but moviegoers did not care. They love this franchise. “Fast &  Furious 6”  took in $120 million for its debut in the U.S. The top six films helped generate more than $300 million at the domestic box office, beating the previous record for a Memorial Day weekend. “Star Trek Into Darkness” opened in the number one spot last weekend and has made a ton of money at the box office. “The Dark Knight Rises” doesn’t open until after midnight, but this superhero flick has already racked up an a huge $25 million in advanced ticket sales as of yesterday. This is supposed to be the final installment of a Batman trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan. It started with “Batman Begins” (2005) and then followed with The Dark Knight” (2008).
