Movie ticket sales soar during the recession

While other industries are being slammed by the recession, the Hollywood Box Office is being stoked by it. “Monsters vs. Aliens” rumble to number one at the Box Office

 “Monsters vs. Aliens” had a smashing debut earning a gigantic $58 million to easily crush the competition and grab the top spot at the Box Office this weekend. Science fiction wins out over romance at the Box Office

Weekend filmgoers were in the mood for a science fiction thriller and that pushed the new movie, “Knowing” to the top of the Box Office. The Nicolas Cage supernatural doomsday flick debuted at number one with a haul of $24.8 million. The new bromance, “I Love You, Man,” with its crude humor and “R” rating swaggered into second with around $18.4 million. “Race to Witch Mountain” beats the competition at the Box Office

DC Comics launches new Watchmen website

“Watchmen” the movie stormed the Box Office over the weekend, grabbing the number one ranking and making around $55 million. Even though fans have not gushed and cheered the way they did for “The Dark Knight,” the “Watchmen” flick is still making barrels of money. Superheroes ruled the Box Office over the weekend. The long awaited movie version of “Watchmen” debuted Friday and has been packing the theaters. So it’s no surprise the doomsday thriller killed the competition and racked up an estimated $55 million to become the number one film in the country. No doubt, a sequel is in the works. “Watchmen” is based on a popular comic book series first released in the mid-1980s. The comic-book-to-movie trend in Hollywood continues to be pretty much a win-win situation with plenty of dollar signs. Two more Tyler Perry movie projects on the fast track

Super successful filmmaker Tyler Perry ‘s latest film is on top of the Box Office, but that’s not slowing his pace. Today distributor Lionsgate announced it has acquired the rights to two more Perry movies, according to Variety. One film, “I Can Do Bad All By Myself,” is based on a Perry play and stars Oscar-nominated actress, Taraji P. “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail” still tops at the Box Office

“Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail” held onto the number one spot at the Box Office for a second week, despite being challenged by the teen heartthrobs the Jonas Brothers. The broad comedy earned an estimated $16.5 million to bring its two week total to a huge $64.8 million in the U.S.  Disney’s rock documentary,  “Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience,” debuted in second with around $12.7 million. Tyler Perry’s “Madea” kills the competition at the Box Office

Critics slammed it, but movie fans packed the theaters this weekend to see, “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail.”  The new over-the-top comedy racked up a huge $41 million to easily become the number one film in the country.  Variety reports that this is the seventh Perry film distributed by Lionsgate. So far those films have grossed $300 million at the domestic Box Office. Horror trumps romance at the holiday Box Office

On this Valentine’s Day weekend most of the moviegoers were not looking for hearts, flowers, and romance. Surprisingly, the biggest crowds opted for a good fright by packing the theaters to see the new version of  “Friday the 13th.” This horror re-make of the bloody adventures of the machete wielding killer, Jason Voorhees, pulled in an estimated $42 million over the weekend to become the number one film in the country. “Taken” grabs the number one spot at the Box Office

Movie fans got hooked on the action/adventure/thriller “Taken” this Super Bowl weekend. “Taken” debuted number one with an estimated haul of $24.6 million. Comedy is still king at the Box Office

“Paul Blart: Mall Cop” is number one for a second straight week at the Box Office. The slapstick comedy about a  security guard who has to face down a bunch of bad guys in a New Jersey mall earned an estimated $21.5 million at theaters across the nation. Clint Eastwood producer/star/director of “Gran Torino.”   The New Year is off to a great start for 78-year-old mega-star Clint Eastwood.
