Obama winning presidential cookie poll

Illinois Senator Barack Obama is not only the front runner in the major political polls, but he’s also          outselling his opponent, Arizona Senator John McCain, in a local presidential cookie poll. Super popular Porto’s Bakery & Cafe At Magnolia Boulevard and Hollywood Way in Burbank has been offering John McCain and Barack Obama cookies for several weeks. I dropped by the Cuban-style bakery on Thursday, October 23 and discovered the presidential cookie poll was well underway. Friendly counter staff members “Robert” and “Jasmine ” told me they were delighted with the... Read More →

Political yard signs; the good and the bad

FLLewis/A Writer’s Groove – Burbank The closer it gets to Election Day the more political yard signs I see in my Burbank neighborhood. The most popular are those for the presidential candidates. Barack Obama signs started popping up first, more than a month ago. Lately, the folks backing the John McCain/Sarah Palin ticket have put out yard signs to show their support. Now, that’s all good. Janet Reynolds speaks to a gathering on August 28, 2008; the night Senator Barack Obama accepted the Democratic... Read More →

Seriously, Joe the Plumber digs the spotlight

“I’m a plumber… just a plumber,” that’s how Joe Wurzelbacher described himself when he lashed out at the media for scrutinizing his opinions and personal life, last weekend. Yeah, Joe is that guy.  Joe the Plumber. The Joe that Republican presidential candidate John McCain mentioned repeatedly in the third and final presidential debate. In fact, McCain referred to Wurzelbacher as “my buddy, Joe.” Wurzelbacher was thrust into the public arena after having a brief chat with Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama back on October 12. During the encounter, Wurzelbacher complained about Obama’s tax plan, which he... Barack Obama, his grandmother, and Las Vegas

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is taking a break from the hectic campaign trail to visit his gravely ill grandmother, Madelyn Dunham. She still lives in the same Honolulu, Hawaii apartment where she helped raise a teenage Obama. Recently, 85-year-old Dunham reportedly broke her hip and apparently her health worsened last week. Late yesterday, Obama flew to her bedside and will spend today with the woman he says helped shape his values and his character. When Obama’s campaign announced his intentions to take a break from campaigning to visit Dunham, some asked how could he... Read More →

Sarah Palin’s fashion controversy

Sarah Palin shows off her fashion style at the Republican National Convention last month. I’ve never been impressed with the political babble of Republican V.P. candidate, Sarah Palin. I don’t buy into the Alaska governor’s boast that one of her qualifications for the second most powerful position in the nation is that she’s “a hockey mom.”  However, Palin gets the props and kudos from me for her campaign fashion style. I love the tailored jackets and skirts with just the right amount of flair; and the cool eyewear. Now, it turns out that while Palin... Read More →

Nearly 20,000 new voters beat the deadline to register in Los Angeles County

FLLewis/A Writer’s Groove Voters at a Burbank polling place during last February’s Presidential Primary Election. The get out the vote campaign in Los Angeles County turned out to be a super success. Last weekend, the number of voters registered in the county hit a record-breaking 4,195,016. The last time the registration rolls leaped the 4 million mark was back in 2002. Monday was the deadline to register to cast a ballot in the historic November 4 Presidential General Election. On Tuesday, the number of registered voters in the county had jumped 18,756 to 4,213,772. Some... Read More →

Obama campaign keeps the pedal to the metal

Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama is on a roll with the destination being the White House. Yet, his campaign is not letting up, despite leading in the polls, getting impressive endorsements, and raising mega-bucks. I think that shows Obama is running not only an inspiring campaign, but also a smart campaign. Yesterday, I got another one of those Obama campaign e-mails, which included a thank you for your support, an update on fundraising along with a report on the latest campaign developments. In the e-mail, campaign manager David Plouffe said, “…... Read More →

The final Obama/McCain showdown packs a punch

The formal greetings were barely over at the third presidential debate, before Republican candidate Senator John McCain went on the attack, throwing verbal punches, jabs, and a few low blows at his front-running opponent, Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama. The final presidential debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York had the most drama and the most clashes between the candidates. McCain was aggressive, sarcastic, and determined. Again, Obama remained calm, focused, and articulate to the finish. Moderator Bob Schieffer asked questions about domestic issues and made a serious effort to keep the candidates on topic.... Obama heads into the final debate as the front runner

Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama has a sizable lead in two major polls over his Republican challenger Senator John McCain. The Obama camp is probably cheering that good news, but it would be unwise for them to throttle back on their efforts. Clearly Senator McCain is the underdog, but I’ve seen too many come from behind victories to count him out. Nevertheless, the poll numbers are impressive. In the latest Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll, Obama has increased his lead over McCain, 50 percent to 41 percent, among voters likely to cast... Read More →

Obama campaign plans big time TV ads

FLLewis/A Writer’s Groove Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s campaign is gearing up for a multi-million dollar TV ad blitz just days before the general election. The Hollywood Reporter says the Obama campaign has brokered a deal with CBS, NBC, and is negotiating with the other networks as well. The CBS deal is for a half-hour of primetime reportedly at a cost $961,000. NBC is selling the Obama campaign a half-hour for close to a million dollars as well. No word yet on the content of this 30 minute mega-Obama ad. Also, there are rumblings that the... Read More →

Did McCain make a gaffe in 2nd debate?

Google image It is no secret that Republican presidential Senator John McCain needed to make a strong showing at last Tuesday’s debate in Nashville. During the town-hall style gathering, McCain worked hard to get his views across and to try to cast doubt on Senator Barack Obama’s ability to lead. In pursuit of those goals, did McCain trip himself up? Yesterday, a reader left a comment on my post, “Who won the 2nd debate?” suggesting McCain did indeed make a blunder. The reader points to McCain’s response to a question from moderator Tom... Read More →

Who won the 2nd presidential debate?

Did Republican nominee Senator John McCain score a game changing win at the town-hall style debate in Nashville last night?  Or did Democratic hopeful Senator Barack Obama out shine McCain again in the second debate as many felt he did in the first?  For the next few days these questions will be debated in the media and among voters. I expected McCain to do better in Nashville, because he considers the town-hall meeting his strength. This time, McCain’s responses and attacks did not have the nasty bite or condescending tone of the first... Read More →

The V.P. candidates trade jabs in their only debate

Th spin is on today as each presidential campaign is touting the good points of its V.P. candidate’s performance last night. In their first and only debate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and Delaware Senator Joe Biden came out swinging in St. Louis.  As in the first presidential debate, there was no knockout, but each candidate landed some pretty good shots. And more importantly, no big blunders by either candidate, especially the less experienced Palin who has stumbled in recent interviews. Some are saying Biden won the debate, but Palin... Read More →

How many watched the first Obama & McCain debate?

Google image Millions of people tuned in to watch last Friday’s presidential debate between Senators Barack Obama and John McCain. How many? The debate at the University of Mississippi drew 54.4 million viewers, according to the Nielsen ratings. That’s about 16 percent less than the first debate between President George Bush and Senator John Kerry in 2004. Still, the most watched presidential debate remains the 1980 face-off between President Jimmy Carter and Republican contender/California Governor Ronald Reagan. That showdown pulled in 80.6 million viewers. Tomorrow, the vice-presidential candidates, Senator Joe Biden and Alaska... Read More →

Who won the first presidential debate: Obama or McCain?

Presidential candidates and Senators Barack Obama and John McCain are back on the campaign trail today after verbally duking it out at the University of Mississippi last Friday. When the 90 minute debate was over, both candidates were still standing and neither had suffered any major bruising  or gaffes. Many observers were disappointed by this. I was not. Over the weekend, another debate followed. Who won?  A new national  Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll taken right after the debate and through Sunday, showed Obama beating McCain ,49 percent to 44 percent, among 448 registered voters. According to a... Read More →

Book authors rally for Barack

Some published authors are not sitting on the sidelines waiting for Election Day, they’re taking action on the Internet. Novelist Ayelet Waldman is a long-time supporter of Barack Obama and she has come up with a fundraising hook that is really catching on. Waldman is the author of “Love and Other Impossible Pursuits,” “Daughter’s Keeper,” and the Mommy Track mysteries. Waldman launched the website www.Books4Barack.com on September 3, 2008 and has raised $120,000 since then, according to Publishers Weekly. Waldman asked writer friends to donated signed copies of... Barbra Streisand makes a case against McCain

Google file photo Last Tuesday, superstar and activist Barbra Streisand performed at a special concert in Beverly Hills to help raise millions for the Barack Obama for President campaign. In case anyone had any doubts about where the singer stands in the 2008 presidential race, Streisand is speaking out publicly against Republican Presidential hopeful John McCain. The strongly worded piece is called, “The Country Can’t Afford to Elect John McCain.”  It appears on Streisand’s website and as a blog on The Huffington Post.  Streisand views McCain as part of the... The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s website lavote.net has a ton of information on voting and the elections. According to data on that website, there are 4,021,954 registered voters in the county as of September 8, 2008.  At the time of the California Presidential Primary... Huge anti-Sarah Palin rally in Alaska

Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin is back on the campaign trail now after taking a break to spend some time in her home state of Alaska. Palin and her husband were cheered by a large crowd of supporters when they arrived in Fairbanks on September 10. For the next few days, Palin would sit down with ABC’s Charles Gibson for her first TV interview, speak at the deployment to Iraq ceremony for her son Track’s Army unit, and then wrap up her stay with a rally of 1,500 in Anchorage.  Palin flew out of... A very different Sarah Palin book

Another publisher is rushing to print and ship thousands of copies of a Sarah Palin book. On August 29, Republican presidential candidate John McCain picked little-known Alaska Governor Sarah Palin for his running mate. Since then, books about Palin have been in big demand. First to hit the bookstores, “Sarah: How A Hockey Mom Turned Alaska’s Political Establishment Upside Down” by Kaylene Johnson. Coming in the next two to three weeks, “Sarah Palin: A New Kind of Leader,” by Joe Hilley. The third book headed to the marketplace takes a different approach. “101 Things You –and... Read More →
