New movie poster for Disney's "Maleficent"

Disney’s “Maleficent” new movie poster

You gotta love the wicked new poster for Disney’s “Maleficent.” Angelina Jolie looks devilishly fabulous as the movie’s antagonist. The fantasy adventure tells the dark side of Disney’s version of “Sleeping Beauty.” Maleficent is the villainess and the movie focuses on what turned her into such an evil, ah, witch who would curse the young fairytale princess, Aurora. “Maleficent” opens in a few weeks on May 28. New comic — Disney Kingdoms: “Seekers of The Weird”

Disney branched out into the comic book world this month with the debut of its own comic brand, Disney Kingdoms. The launch is in conjunction with comic book giant, Marvel, which Disney now owns.  The first comic, “Seekers of the Weird,” is based on Walt Disney’s idea for a “Museum of The Weird” attraction that was never built. Another big budget box office flop for Disney?

It looks like the executives at Disney have another supersized dud at the box office to explain. Universal’s “Despicable Me 2” owned the 4th of July weekend and scooped up an amazing $83.5 million in its debut, while Disney’s “The Lone Ranger” opened far behind with only $29.2 million. There’s chatter around town that Disney may have another big budget flop the size of its last summer bomb, “John Carter.” More on that here and here.

“Despicable Me 2” shines at theaters, “The Lone Ranger” struggles

The long Fourth of July holiday weekend is shaping up to be a biggie at the box office. Two new films are in the spotlight. Moviegoers appear to be storming the theaters to see Universal Pictures’ animated sequel “Despicable Me 2” while Disney’s stylized western “The Lone Ranger” is struggling to find an audience. Both flicks have great promotion and movie trailers. Both have received mixed reviews. The final decision will come from the ticket buying movie fans. More here.

Weekend box office: Monsters are beating the Zombies

  The weekend box office is all about the monsters and the zombies. The battle is between the new Disney animation, “Monsters University” and Brad Pitt’s new zombie action flick, “World War Z.” And the monsters are winning. The weekend numbers are estimates today, but “Monsters University” appears to be headed to the top spot with around $82 million verses “World War Z” debut of $66 million. Disney signs multi-million dollar deal with Netflix

Disney is reportedly shelling out big bucks for a new deal with Netflix, the online streaming video and by mail DVD service.  The Los Angeles Times says the agreement is worth $200 million and will give Netflix access to a trove of popular television shows from ABC network, Disney Channel, and ABC Family. Disney made the deal with NetFlix, even though, it’s a part owner in rival Internet streaming video provider, Hulu. “Show Me the Polyester” If you look great in polyester and dig rock singer/songwriter, Jackson Browne, here’s a contest for you. Browne is touring the U.S. right now with musician David Lindley. Apparently, Browne and Lindley are sporting flashy polyester shirts on stage during their performances this summer. Entertainment: Disney finally sells Miramax, Record breaking ratings for “The View” thanks to Obama, and another milestone for the “Black Eyed Peas”

 Actor Rob Lowe reportedly part of the group that bought Miramax Miramax, a hot commodity in Hollywood, has been sold to a group of investors led by Billionaire/Construction Magnate, Ronald Tutor. The price tag — somewhere between $600-$675 million. The announcement came out yesterday. Late today, The Wrap reported that Actor Rob Lowe is among the investors.
