Food Groove: New vegan restaurant opens in Silver Lake

I went to “by CHLOE.” vegan restaurant in Silver Lake because of Chef Chloe. She is a vegan celebrity who is known for her amazing vegan recipes and dishes at her New York City restaurant “by CHLOE.” For months, there’s been a lot buzz about this chain coming to the Southland. I wanted to be one of the first vegans to check it out and give my feedback! So, I was there for the grand opening last Tuesday, May 31, when the doors opened at 11 a.m. The restaurant is... National Donut Day Friday June 3, 2016

Not only is it Friday, but also it’s National Donut Day. The celebration of the sweet treat goes back to World War I  and II when the Salvation Army offered free donuts to our troops. The soldiers returned home longing for the donuts they had during wartime and that sparked a new industry. No matter how you spell it, Donut or Doughnut, Americans love them. Some places are offering a free donut with a purchase, however, at Krispy Kreme you get a freebie of your choice... Read More →

A lot of holiday cheer and great food at the festive Toluca Lake Holiday Open House , “Let There Be Light,” last night. Pink’s free hot dogs was one of the major attractions. Hundreds lined up for the famous dogs. Pink’s main location is at La Brea and Melrose Avenues in Hollywood, where they have been selling their prized hot dogs since 1939. Lately, the family run company has branched out to other locations as well as into the catering business. The Pink’s tent began serving free... Read More →

Pizza Studio open for business in Burbank

The Pizza Studio is open for business in Burbank. Earlier in the week, the fast food restaurant announced its arrival at 3619 West Magnolia Boulevard by giving away free pizza! The pizza joint officially opened its doors yesterday in Magnolia Park, in the old Quiznos location, across the street from Porto’s Bakery and Cafe. Today, I dropped by around noon. There were friendly staffers in front and behind the counter.  Customers were either in line or chowing down on pizza at the tables. I asked one... Read More →

Review: Good eats at Big Mama’s and Papa’s Pizzeria in Burbank

To my surprise, we got some pretty good eats at Big Mama’s and Papa’s Pizzeria in Burbank. It’s hard to live up to the hype from the 2014 Academy Awards pizza delivery stunt and all that attention from the Ellen Degeneres Show. Nevertheless, we left this pizza joint full and satisfied after a quick-lunch last week. However, it almost did not happen. I saw a help wanted sign for a cook on the door and just about turned around to head somewhere else. If... Read More →

Review: The Canyon Grille better than former Clubhouse Grill

The big reopening bash for the Canyon Grille restaurant at the DeBell Golf Club on East Walnut in Burbank is this evening. The Canyon Grille has been open only a few months and is already a vast improvement over its predecessor, the very marginal Clubhouse Grill. The Canyon Grille has the potential to be a notable eatery in the Media City, but there are still some bumps and rough spots that need attention. Last Sunday, my husband and I had lunch at the C-G. The prices are reasonable... Read More →

Lunch at DeBell Clubhouse Grill gets thumbs down review

I joined friends for lunch on the patio of the Clubhouse Grill at the DeBell Golf Club in Burbank yesterday, and it was a big disappointment. The views of the hillsides and golf greens were terrific, but the food and the service were totally sub par. First, our table was dirty and we had to ask the waitress to clean it off. She gave it a quick wipe — leaving behind food stuck to the table surface. After we ordered, it took 20 minutes or so for our food to... Read More →

Landmark Burbank restaurant re-opens

A Burbank landmark, Frank’s Coffee Shop and Restaurant, 916 West Olive Avenue, is back in business, after falling on hard times and having to close its doors several weeks ago. Today during the pre-opening,  manager and former owner, Jose Lopez, and his staff were serving customers just like old times at Frank’s. One customer, chowing down on a hot turkey sandwich, told me the food was even” better than before!” Frank’s first opened its doors back in the 1950s. It quickly gained a reputation as a friendly neighborhood eatery with... Read More →

Guest Blogger: The tomato debate

Is a tomato a fruit or vegetable? This was a question that was on a test I took in elementary school. Regardless of its correct label, everyone knows that tomatoes are good for you. Times magazine listed tomatoes as one of the 10 foods that prevent cancer. There are many different ways to prepare tomatoes to eat. I however, simply enjoy cutting up slices of tomatoes to eat raw while dipping them in sugar. I have two different tomato stories to tell you. Tomatoes were first... Read More →

Handy Market cooks grilling to the max at a recent July BBQ. Bargain prices at popular Burbank submarine sandwich shop

The American flags were out at this neighborhood eatery during the long 4th of July weekend. Many local businesses closed up shop during the long holiday weekend: not Giamela’s in Burbank. When I asked the owner, Edward Giamela, if he ever takes off. “We’re never closed.” He declared with a straight face and then smiled. “That’s a lie. We’re closed four days: Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s.” Giamela continue to laugh and joke as he worked making sandwiches behind the counter with three male employees on the...
