Labor Day stroll through a Burbank neighborhood

Clouds, sunshine, and mild temperatures on this Labor Day.  Not the rocking, sunny, sizzling hot Labor Day we have come to expect in Burbank and the rest of the Southland. Not really beach weather, but great for kicking back at home or taking a casual stroll through a Burbank neighborhood. The high today only in the mid-to-upper 70s. The patchy clouds and early morning fog expected to hang around for at least one more day.  Daytime temperatures expected to rise into the 80s and possibly the 90s during the rest... Read More →

Stay cool on Father’s Day

It’s not going to be easy to stay cool on Father’s Day. The Southland is going to sizzle today. The thermometer hit 80 before 9 a.m. in Burbank this morning. A good indicator it’s going to be scorcher. Weather watchers say the Media City will be one of many  SoCal places, which will fry in triple digits before the sun goes down. The heat wave will continue through Tuesday. Some relief predicted on Wednesday. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning through Monday at... Read More →

National Donut Day Friday June 3, 2016

Not only is it Friday, but also it’s National Donut Day. The celebration of the sweet treat goes back to World War I  and II when the Salvation Army offered free donuts to our troops. The soldiers returned home longing for the donuts they had during wartime and that sparked a new industry. No matter how you spell it, Donut or Doughnut, Americans love them. Some places are offering a free donut with a purchase, however, at Krispy Kreme you get a freebie of your choice... Read More →

President Obama on Memorial Day and our fallen heroes

President Obama on Memorial Day and our fallen heroes. This weekend, Obama offered up praise to active-duty troops and veterans, while he stressed Memorial Day is for those brave warriors who never came home. For many of us, the holiday is a great time to gather for BBQs and parties, shop, or just relax and enjoy our freedoms. We can do more. In his weekly address, the president asked Americans to take part in an act of remembrance from hiring a veteran, reaching out to a grieving military family or... Read More →

Shout out to a Burbank mom on Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, especially working mothers like Burbank resident, Kaili Larssen.  Yesterday, Larssen was sitting out in the chilly morning under threatening skies in front of Handy Market 2514 West Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank. While some moms were being honored with pampering treatments like a trip to the day spa, or preparing for special engagements with family and friends, or just taking it easy, Larssen was trying to raise funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Burbank & Greater East Valley. Larssen didn’t mind the... Read More →

Candidate for State Senate District 25 Phlunte Riddle on Mother's Day

Mother’s Day: Phlunte Riddle candidate for State Senate

I wanted to take a quick break from knocking on doors to wish all the moms out there Happy Mother’s Day for tomorrow. Even after passing, my mother continues to be an inspiration to me. She had a fire for justice within her that led her to leave the South at the age of 17 and then went on to raise three daughters while working two jobs. She should be a saint because we were a handful. I still take her lessons of kindness, hard work, and helping... Read More →

Presidents’ Day: Wisdom from Washington and Lincoln

If the heated and sometimes rowdy Republican presidential debates are making you a little nauseous and nervous about who will lead this country, just think back to some words of wisdom from  the two famous past presidents we honor today, George Washington (February 22, 1732 – December 14, 1799) and Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865).   “The basis of our political system is the right of the people to make and to alter their constitutions of government.” George Washington (Farewell address,...
