What’s Behind Skyrocketing Egg Prices? Egg prices are skyrocketing everywhere. In Burbank, the average price is between $5 and $6 for a dozen of white eggs. This week, I got lucky and bought a carton of 12 white eggs at the Trader Joe’s on East Alameda Avenue for $2.99! A bargain. Going out of business sales at Sports Authority

Going out of business sales at Sports Authority stores expected to begin the middle of this week, just as the long Memorial Day weekend kicks off. One of the 450 stores closing is at the Empire Center in Burbank. Sports Authority was once the largest sporting goods retailer in the country. Heavily in debt,  the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy back in March. It had hope to restructure and shutter only some of its stores. Warner Bros. CEO admits layoffs are coming

Apparently no one’s job is safe at Warner Bros. A lot of tension and frayed nerves there as the employees wait to see who will get the axe.  In an office memo yesterday, CEO Kevin Tsujihara confirmed reports that layoffs are coming. Tsujihara did not say how many jobs would be cut, but said the axe will fall  “across the Studio. ” Warner, based in Burbank,  has somewhere around 8, 000 employees globally. Web Buzz: Buyouts and layoffs at Warner Bros.

  There’s chatter on the Internet about buyouts and layoffs at Warner Bros. First reported on Bloomberg  yesterday, buyouts have already begun in the division that includes CNN and TBS. Variety says “500 to 600” employees have received those offers.  However, more are coming for other parts of the Burbank-based company and top brass “may fire staff if too few employees take the offer,” according to the Bloomberg sources. Layoffs at NBC and Paramount

As the fall season kicks in, several major entertainment companies are trimming their staffs. Some members of the NBC digital team reportedly got the axe yesterday. Here’s more on Deadline. Also, more than a hundred people lost their jobs at Paramount on Tuesday. The job cutbacks hit a number of departments including finance, human resources, and even legal. Disney-ABC Television Group to layoff 175

The Disney-ABC Television Group is reorganizing and laying off 175 workers. The cutbacks reportedly will start  today, mostly at the unit’s eight owned and operated stations in New York, Southern California, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Houston, Raleigh Durham and Fresno. The SoCal station is located nearby in Glendale. The firings will reduce the 7,600 staff by 2 per cent. The reason: new technologies forcing the hiring of workers with skills for the digital age. Award Season: Oscar maker layoffs, Writers Guild and Grammy nominations

Oscar maker to axe  a lot of workers It’s not going to be a ho, ho, jolly holiday season for some employees of the company that makes Oscar. The Wrap is reporting today that R.S. Owens, a Chicago-based company, will be laying off almost 100 workers by December 17. That’s more than a third of the staff. R.S. NBC Universal: More cutbacks and layoffs

NBC Universal is showing signs of rising from the ratings cellar, but that has not stopped the cutbacks and layoffs by parent company, Comcast. (Disclosure: I am a former NBC employee). The Internet is buzzing with the latest reports of 500 employees getting the axe throughout the entertainment, news, and cable units. Talk of the town: Yahoo begins layoffs of 2,000 employees

  Some of those hard working employees at the Internet giant Yahoo are getting shown the door today. Two thousand employees are being sacrificed”…as part of an overall plan to reshape the Company for the future,” Yahoo says in an SEC filing, according to deadline.com.
