Laker coach Mike D’Antoni resigns

Another major story rocks the Southland sports scene. Laker coach, Mike D’Antoni, resigns. D’Antoni made the announcement last night, but it did not come as a surprise. D’Antoni is not a favorite of the fans nor some long-time Laker supporters like, Magic Johnson. D’Antoni’s  two-season record with the Lakers has been poor at best. This year ,the Lakers ended the season with the worst record in the franchise’s history. D’Antoni shouldn’t get all the blame, the players and management have to share in that failure as... After one season of less than dazzling play center, Dwight Howard, is saying bye-bye to the Lakers and its fans. For weeks, there has been a lot of chatter about Howard and what he might do once he became a free agent on July first. Would he re-sign with the Lakers or go elsewhere? Last night, it became official:  Howard was blowing off some heavy recruitment by Kobe and the Laker management and headed to another NBA Team. Apparently, the Lakers were outmaneuvered by the... Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss dies

A lot of sadness in Laker land tonight, as folks come to terms with the passing, earlier today, of team owner, Dr. Jerry Buss. At the age of 80 and reportedly after a long battle with cancer, Buss died this morning at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. He was the majority owner of the Lakers and is given credit for being the architect of the basketball franchise’s showtime success. He had a Ph.D in physical chemistry and keen business sense. Lakers lose some magic

Former Laker Superstar, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, is no longer part owner of the NBA champion Lakers.  Sad, but true. Yesterday, the team announced Johnson had sold his ownership share to Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, a 25-year season-ticket holder, local businessman, and philanthropist.   Johnson reportedly bought his share for $10 million in 1994. No official word on what it sold for, but according to the Los Angeles Times, Johnson’s stake was about 4.5 percent. Last December, Forbes magazine listed the Lakers as the NBA’s most valuable franchise at $607... Read More →

L.A. Lakers win the 2009 NBA championship

Photo: Robert Gauthier/Los Angeles Times Victory is sweet. I don’t think anyone needs to tell hard charging, hoop shooting, Kobe Bryant that tonight. Bryant scored 30 points, six rebounds, and five assists in the title clincher. Along with the title, Bryant won the MVP trophy for the NBA Finals. This is the 15th NBA championship for the Lakers.
