Burbank Walmart set to open soon – hiring underway

The converting of the old Great Indoors site into a new Walmart Supercenter is nearly complete in Burbank’s Empire Center. “We currently project opening in June,” according to Delia Garcia, Director of Communications for Walmart. After months of controversy, the remodeling has been steady and uneventful. Burbank is getting a serious dose of April showers. It started last Thursday afternoon with showers steady enough to force many Burbankers to bring out the umbrellas and cold weather gear. Yesterday began with some cloudy threatening skies in the morning, which soon opened up to deliver rain off and on most of the day. Suspect who allegedly targeted Burbank arrested

A serial burglary suspect who allegedly struck several times in Magnolia Park and Burbank Village sections of the Media City is behind bars tonight. Burbank Police announced late today the arrest of 28 year-old Hakob Torosyan of Glendale. Torosyan is being held without bail and is due to appear in a Burbank court Tuesday, March 15, on 14 counts of commercial burglary, according to a Burbank Police news release. The future is looking brighter for the Haggen grocery store at 3830 West Verdugo Avenue in Burbank. This is one of the around 100 stores Haggen is selling off in an effort to right its struggling company, which filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in early September. After blistering hot weekend, cooler temps on the way

A lot of record-breaking heat in Burbank over the past few days, but a cooling trend, ever so slight, is expected to kick in today. Yesterday, the temperature soared to 100 in B-town — tied the previous record set on October 11 in 1971.  Also, a record high temperature of 104 set in Burbank on Friday — broke an old record of 101 set in 1976. Summer-like temperatures returned with a vengeance today. At 2 p.m. it was 102 in the Media City. Some weather watchers are saying it could get even hotter — before the day is done. Victim fights back in attempted purse snatching in Burbank

Burbank Police arrested a man today for allegedly attempting to snatch the purse of a young woman. It happened this morning around 11:30 a.m. in the 300 block of Olive Avenue in downtown Burbank. BPD spokesman, Sergeant Claudio Losacco, says: “The woman reported that she was walking when the man, who is identified as 24 year-old Manuel Martinez of Los Angeles, approached her and tried to take her purse.  The woman told officers she held onto her purse and punched the man two times, knocking him to the ground.” The unidentified... New heat record in Burbank

A new heat record in Burbank. Yesterday the temperature shot up to 104 in the Media City, beating the old record of 103 set back on that date in 1943, according to the National Weather Service. The temperature in B-town today should be lower than the record breaker on Sunday, but it’s still hot. The high temperature expected to soar into the upper 80s perhaps even into the 90s. A slight chance of rain today, that grows to 30 percent tonight through Tuesday.

Sizzling heat in Burbank today

Some serious sunshine in Burbank today. Along with a sizzling blast from the sun, weather watchers are saying the high will reach the upper 90s even possibly triple digits in the Media City. Also, some tropical moisture could bring a threat of rain through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. So take precautions in the heat and be on the look out for those unexpected thunderstorms.

Burbank DUI checkpoint nets 3 arrests and 11 citations

A DUI checkpoint in Burbank resulted in three arrests as well as several citations and warnings. The Burbank PD Traffic Bureau set up the checkpoint at Olive Avenue and Lake Street last night.
