Shout out to a Burbank mom on Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, especially working mothers like Burbank resident, Kaili Larssen.  Yesterday, Larssen was sitting out in the chilly morning under threatening skies in front of Handy Market 2514 West Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank. While some moms were being honored with pampering treatments like a trip to the day spa, or preparing for special engagements with family and friends, or just taking it easy, Larssen was trying to raise funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Burbank & Greater East Valley. Larssen didn’t mind the... Read More →

Shout out to Porto’s in Burbank

Shout out to Burbank’s Porto’s for topping one of the most prestigious lists around. The wonderfully tasty desserts and other food items on the menu got Porto’s ranked number one on Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in the US for 2016. These “businesses that rank so highly in the Yelp community’s opinion that they have earned the status of must try within this lifetime, ” according to the Yelp blog. A well deserved honor for our Porto’s — only negative — with this new-found fame theRead More →

A shout out to Burbank Unified School District officials

Quick action by some officials in the Burbank Unified School District have turned a call out into a shout out for some watering issues at David Starr Jordan Middle School, 420 South Mariposa Street. Burbank school officials got called out on  Media City Groove for watering the front lawn at Jordan on a hot Labor Day, two weeks ago. Not only were the sprinklers going full force, but the watering occurred on Monday. Burbank allows outside irrigation only on Tuesdays and Saturdays.... Read More →

Call-out : A Burbank school waters on Monday in the heat

Outdoor watering restrictions are in effect in Burbank, but apparently at David Starr Jordan Middle School on South Mariposa Street they’re not following city rules. As I walked by the school campus at around 11 a.m. today, I noticed some sprinklers spraying steady streams of water on a lawn section dotted with some young trees. The temperature at the time was 80 and climbing on a hot Labor Day. This is wrong for a number of reasons. First, outdoor watering in the Media City has been restricted to two... Read More →

Shout-out to two Burbank parents — homework crusaders

It’s perfectly normal for kids to complain about homework. However, homework assignments have become a pain for many parents as well. A  survey sent out by the John Burroughs High School PTA got a lot of complaints from parents about the stress and disruption to family life caused by  heavy loads of homework. Here are some quotes from parents collected in the survey: Parents react to homework load: “Weekends have become so unpleasant because a HUGE chunk of it is used to catch up or get slightly ahead on homework.”... Remembering the King of Pop Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009 at the age of 50.  His memory and his music live on. I want to give a shout- out to the music genius with one of my favorite MJ tunes and videos, “Remember the Time” (released January 14, 1992). The cast includes entertainer, Eddie Murphy, supermodel, Iman, Laker legend, Magic Johnson, and stars, the King of Pop.

Mother’s Day shout-outs to NBA’s Kevin Durant and his mother

On this Mother’s Day, Oklahoma Thunder superstar, Kevin Durant, gets a shout-out for the praise he heaped on his mother this week. While accepting this season’s NBA MVP award last Tuesday, Durant gave an emotional speech thanking his mama for her sacrifices and faith in him. Choking back tears the NBA power forward called Wanda Pratt the “real MVP” for being the single mother who raised him and his brother on a shoestring. Pratt deserves a couple of shout-outs this Mother’s Day for raising a... Read More →

Shout-out to Ben & Jerry’s. It’s Free Cone Day!

A shout-out to Ben & Jerry’s for celebrating its anniversary, April 8, with Free Cone Day. The free scoops were offered up by the ice cream company on its first anniversary back in 1979. “We’ve kept it up every year since, spreading the peace, love & ice cream around the globe,” according to a statement on the company’s website. This is the kind of celebration you would expect from a company that makes imaginative flavors like “Hazed & Confused,” “Salted Caramel Blondie,” “Chunky Monkey,” and or... Read More →

News rack for The Burbank Leader

Call-out: The Burbank Leader to remove all city news racks

Outside news racks for The Burbank Leader have been disappearing from the city streets for some time. I have been critical of that fact in the past. Now the word from the editor, Dan Evans, is that all the Burbank Leader news racks will be history soon. Bad news. Terrible idea. The reason, Evans says, it’s “theft.” In a recent column about changes to the Leader and the Glendale News-Press, editor, Dan Evans, explained it this way: “Have you wondered why you were unable to... A shout out to the Tallyrand !

I dropped by the Tallyrand restaurant at 1700 West Olive Avenue around 4:30 p.m. yesterday for an early dinner. This is usually a slow time for eateries , but to my surprise, the Rand was bustling with activity. The reason: a fundraiser for senior services in Burbank. If a customer requested it, the restaurant management donated 20 per cent of the bill to that cause. While I enjoyed my super tuna melt with tomatoes and a side of juicy fruit, I watched the customers come in and... Read More →

Shout-outs and Call-outs: Who got noticed

Shout-outs   Some praise is deserved for the extremely popular and apparently very customer service savvy Porto’s Bakery at Magnolia Boulevard and Hollywood Way in Burbank. As I was leaving the bakery/eatery last Thursday night at closing time, I noticed an employee handing out bags of something at the door. I asked the young lady with the bright smile about the bags. She told me her name is Alejandrina and that  she was explaining to the late comers that the bakery was closed and offering each one a... Read More →
