Brrr! Cold and windy in the Southland

Some weather reports say it’s “breezy” outside. I call it “windy.”  In Burbank, the palm trees are being whipped around by the strong winds. Some of the gusts in Media City are over 30 miles per hour. And temperatures have dropped down into the 50s. Brrr! I know back East, they would break out the shorts and tee shirts in this kind of weather. Hey, this is Southern California where we put on coats and double sweaters when it gets this cold. This chilly weather is expected to hang around until the... Read More →

A stormy Saturday in the Southland

Surprise, we’re getting dumped on by another winter storm. The cloudy skies let loose with a prelude of thunder and drizzle, which soon erupted into a steady rain in Burbank shortly after 10 a.m. This is a cold rainstorm. The high might reach 60 in Media City, but I doubt it. The rain is expected to hang around through tonight. The prediction is for cloudy skies and a 20 percent chance of rain tomorrow. Hopefully, it will not rain on Sunday’s Oscar festivities.

Another storm rains on the Southland

Some scattered showers in the Southland tonight. In Burbank, sprinkles began around 10 p.m. In a matter of minutes, those sprinkles had turned into a steady rain. Forecasters are predicting this storm will be a lightweight and will blow out of here by mid-morning. However, more rain is headed our way in a day or so.  Hopefully, Los Angeles County Officials and residents in the burn areas of the local foothills are prepared for tonight’s rain and whatever storm rolls in over the weekend.

Southland gets drenched by another storm

Rain is falling in Burbank this morning as a serious storm moves through the Southland today. Already the burn areas in the nearby foothills have received 1-2 inches of rain and that has caused mud and debris to start to flow. Around 243 homes in the risky areas of La Cañada Flintridge and La Crescenta were ordered evacuated and some roads closed by late yesterday as the storm approached. Despite the danger, some of those residents refused to leave and decided to stay hunkered down in their homes. The first band of rain... Read More →

Good and bad news for Burbank

Burbank has not escaped the bumps and bruises of the brutal recession, but yesterday it got some good news from one of the top financial agencies. Standard and Poor’s upgraded Burbank’s credit rating to “AAA,” the highest grade possible.   S&P credited the Media City with a strong local economy, steady tax base, low debt, high reserve balance, and attractive location in the Southland as reasons for the rate hike, according to a press release on the city’s website. Sprinkles and cloudy skies in the Southland

The umbrella is becoming almost a daily necessity in the Southland these days. There are reports of sprinkles from cloudy skies in various places and cities this morning and later today, that light rain could turn into showers. Even if we don’t get a measurable amount of rain from this storm, a second is on the way for Friday and it’s packing more of a punch. In Burbank, the skies are overcast and the chance of rain is 20 percent today and 50 percent tonight!

Stormy weather for the weekend

New Update: Saturday night 02/20/10 Light rain, here and there, in Burbank tonight.   UPDATED: Saturday 02/20/10                                                                                                              Mandatory evacuations were lifted this morning at 8 a.m. for about 200 residents living in the burn region and storm-threatened neighborhoods of La Cañada Flintridge and La Crescenta. Los Angeles County officials warn that only residents with “valid identification” will be allowed into those foothill communities. However the folks there should not unpack, because another storm is on track to sweep through the Southland later this weekend and more evacuations could be ordered. Meanwhile, County Department of Public... Read More →

Valentine’s Day weekend weather — gorgeous!

The birds are singing and with good reason on this gorgeous Southland Saturday. There’s not a hint of all those vicious storms that wreaked havoc on SoCal for days, forcing the locals to hunker down in their homes with the windows shut tight and the heater blasting. Earlier this week, while shivering on a corner in Burbank waiting for the light to turn green, a co-worker next to me asked, “Is this not the coldest winter ever?” I didn’t know the answer, but it sure felt like it at the time.  A short while ago, I... The East Coast is getting walloped by the second major snowstorm in a week. The storm is expected to drop upwards of 14 inches on the nation’s capital today. The snowy weather has shutdown government agencies, grounded airlines, closed schools, and even halted the delivery of the U.S. mail in some places. For White House first dog Bo, the blizzard meant playtime in a... Read More →

More rain & more evacuations!

UPDATE  4:07 p.m.  The mandatory evacuation of 300 homes ordered in nearby Sierra Madre due to the heavy downpour and what officials there call a “red flag mud alert.” Reports of hail and thunderstorms in the Southland as well.   UPDATE 12:30 p.m. Right on schedule, thunder and heavy rain in Burbank. This is a cooold system! I was outside a short while ago and you need a coat and umbrella to deal with the weather conditions. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get some hail soon. The first band of a... Devastating Southland storm triggers mud flows & evacuations

Photo: Anne Cusack/Los Angeles Times — a runaway mud flow sweeps away trees and rocks and races down a street in La Cañada Flintridge today. Check out the L.A. Times storm photo gallery here. A vicious storm sucker punched the Southland early this morning, unleashing landslides, swift mud flows, causing power outages, damaging around 43 homes, and forcing evacuations. Some areas got as much as four inches of rain from this latest series of stormy weather. Here in Burbank, I was awakened by loud, rumbling thunder followed by some intense pounding rain on the roof before... Read More →

Showers in the Southland

The Southland is getting pelted by more rain showers again. The rain rolled in overnight and by morning, there were reports of flooding and snarled traffic on local highways and roads. Weather watchers are predicting this storm will come through in three waves — the first is dumping on the region now — light showers to heavy rain — depending on where you are. The second wave is due this afternoon and then, the third arrives sometime on Saturday. A light rain falling in Burbank this morning, but it will become heavier later on in... Read More →

Sunshine in the Southland

Hello, sunshine!! The rain is gone and the sun is out in the Southland. Here in Media City this afternoon, the temperature is around 66, but feels warmer. The weather is expected to be sunny with comfy temps in the 60s and even low 70s in the Southland for the next few days.

Here we go again, rain!!!

Burbank and the Southland are getting dumped on by another winter storm this afternoon. Weather watchers are saying it’s not going to be as bad as expected. We are getting a “glancing blow” rather than a full punch from this storm.   It should roll out of here by tomorrow, after dropping about a quarter of an inch or half-inch  or so of rain. Then our weather should be sunny and mild through next week. As much as we need the rain, I’m looking forward to a longer stretch of sunshine and warmer temps.

Sunshine, cloudy skies, cold temps, and a chance of rain

We will probably get through the rest of the weekend without the need for umbrellas, but keep them handy. After a cold night with temperatures in Burbank and other parts of the Southland dropping down into the low 40s and some 30s, it should be sunny with patchy clouds on Sunday. Temps will warm up only into the 50s here in Media City, according to the weatherforyou.com website. Other weather reports predict we’ll get up into the 60s. Those cloudy skies will linger through the beginning of the week and by... Read More →

More thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail coming!!!

We’ve had so much rain, the flowers and plants in my yard are drooping from it all.  This evening, I discovered clusters of white pebbles in the puddles in the flower beds. The pebbles — small ice chips — hail. I got caught in a hail/rainstorm around 6 p.m. while out running some quick errands in Burbank. One cloudburst dropped so much rain, I had trouble seeing through the windshield even though the wipers were whipping back and forth like crazy. Many areas of the Southland, were battered by rain, hail, and wind today. Also,... Read More →

Southland slammed by wind, rain, hail, and tornadoes!

Photo: Gina Ferazzi/Los Angeles Times — A man watches mud, water, and debris wash down a street in front of his Sierra Madre home yesterday. Two powerful storms pounded the Southland over the past couple of days, and weather watchers are predicting a third truly monstrous system will roll through before we get a chance to dry out. When I got out this morning, it was chilly and the skies overcast. Soon the showers arrived with rumbling thunder, flashes of lightning, and heavy downpours. As I drove along a street... Read More →

Stormy weather in the Southland

Burbank and the rest of the Southland are in for a serious drenching, according to weather watchers. A storm swooped down on “Media City” this afternoon and it has been raining off and on here since then. The light patter of rain falling on the roof is rather soothing, but the weather situation is expected to get pretty rough later in the week. The temps will dip down into the 50s, perhaps even the 40s tonight with the high only reaching near 60 tomorrow, MLK Jr. Day. This storm is reportedly... Read More →

News Bytes: A very stormy weekend, new pay restrictions for bailed out firms & more trouble for Tiger Woods

Rain, rain, and more rain  Who says it doesn’t really rain in Southern California?  The storms that have rolled through the region so far have packed quite a punch, and another big one is set to hit tonight.  Some areas are getting pretty soggy, so the threat of mudslides, especially in the neighborhoods ravaged by wildfires, remains high. A steady rain has been falling most of the day in Burbank, but that’s not stopping exercisers, wearing slick jogging suits and carrying colorful umbrellas, from getting out. Also, there are still knuckleheads speeding... Read More →
