Record heat in the Southland

How hot is it? So hot that the sun loving flowers in my Burbank yard are wilting. Yesterday, the temperature climbed  to 109 degrees in the Media City. Even at 8 p.m. last night is was still 100. More triple digit heat is headed our way today. Other parts of the Southland are suffering in this heat wave, too.  UPDATED: 3:40 p.m.  At 1 p.m., it was 106 in the Media City. At 3:30 p.m. 109!!  This afternoon the city of Burbank announced the designation of three cooling centers for today and tomorrow: Joslyn Adult Center, Buena Vista and Central Libraries. Joslyn Adult Center at 1301 West Olive Avenue, will be opened 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.  Burbankers over 55 are encouraged to visit the center for some relief from the heat. Eight arrested in Bell city hall corruption scandal. Is Burbank next?

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is cracking down on corruption in the city of Bell. Yesterday the mayor, Oscar Hernandez, and seven other current and former Bell officials were arrested by police and D.A. investigators. Paris Hilton’s guilty plea in Vegas  Hotel Heiress Paris Hilton pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor cocaine charges in a Las Vegas court today.  Hilton got a plea deal: one year probation, $2,000 fine, 200 hours of community service, and she must complete a drug abuse program.  Also, if  Hilton violates her probation she risks going to jail for a year!  A bad turn of events for Actor Randy Quaid and his wife. Both were arrested Saturday evening  for allegedly squatting in a guest home, on a property they once owned, in the upscale community of Montecito, in Santa Barbara County.    Two suspects. Both accused of sexually victimizing a child.  The Burbank Police Department chose to release the mug shot of one suspect — while refusing to do so in the second case.
