Flash mob car crowds expected to invade Burbank today

A flash mob car crowd gathers near the Krispy Kreme donut outlet, 1521 North Victory Place, in Burbank’s Empire Center. That invasion has happened before and despite warnings from the Burbank Police Department and threats of legal action from Burbank City Attorney, Amy Albano, the custom car enthusiasts are apparently planning on returning to the Media City this evening. A few thousand people at an unofficial  event and gridlock on surrounding streets makes the Burbank PD nervous. Burbank Police have sent out news alerts about the... Read More →

Talk of the Town: Burbank City Attorney on the hot seat

The controversy surrounding the dismissal of the Omar Rodriguez cases has put the Burbank City Attorney, Amy Albano, on the hot seat.  At the city council meeting on August 14,  Albano, was asked to explain how the Omar Rodriguez cases ended. You might remember, Albano took over as city attorney last October. Albano reportedly has nearly twenty years of experience in municipal government and was previously the city attorney for Thousand Oaks. Albano beat out 27 other candidates for the Burbank city attorney job. So one would think... Read More →

The official announcement of the new Burbank City Attorney

It has been rumored about for weeks now.  Then, late today the official announcement came from Burbank City Hall in the form of a news release — naming the replacement for retiring Burbank City Attorney, Dennis Barlow. She is Amy Albano who is now the city attorney out in Thousand Oaks. Next Tuesday, the city council will consider appointing Albano to the position — but at this point, that’s merely a formality.  It’s a done deal. Here’s the news release from Public Information Officer, Keith Sterling: Burbank... Read More →

Invite for Dennis Barlow retirement parties

Talk of the Town: Burbank City Attorney’s retirement party e-mail

Quite a bit of talk in B-town about the fairytale-like e-mail announcement sent out to all Burbank City employees yesterday. The e-mail invited folks to save two upcoming dates, September 29 and October 28, for bashes honoring the retirement of controversial Burbank City Attorney, Dennis Barlow. While the invite probably got chuckles from some — it got scorn from others who feel Barlow, a major player in the police mess and scandal, is not quite the lovable, smiling Disney type character portrayed in the e-mail. Hmm, maybe that’s the backhanded... Read More →

The Leader sues the city of Burbank This is a big weekend for the Burbank Leader. If you check its website — you’ll quickly realize why. Two major developments. The new Sunday edition of the Burbank leader/Glendale News- Press comes out today. The other actually happened last Friday. The lawyers for the Los Angeles Times, the Burbank Leader’s parent company, sued the city of Burbank for the release of those individual employee merit-pay amounts. On December, 20, 2010, I delivered a letter to the Burbank... Read More →

Burbank City Attorney Dennis Barlow stepping down

One of the major players at Burbank City Hall is going to be riding off into the sunset — but he’s not saddling up his horse right away. A press release from Burbank Public Information Officer, Keith Sterling, was sent out just before noon today.  It announced the upcoming retirement of Burbank City Attorney, Dennis Barlow.  Burbank’s merit pay for city employees controversy Some new developments in the growing controversy about merit pay for Burbank city employees — who gets them — how much per individual — what is the real criteria for who pockets those extra bucks — are the main questions yet to be answered fully by city officials. Late last Friday, city officials made an effort at damage control over the merit pay issue by sending an extensive e-mail to all employees on the issue. These officials are trying to put out a fire lit by... Read More →

First, over the weekend, an inmate reportedly was found hanging in his jail cell. It was reported on Jim Carlile’s blog and then on The Burbank Leader website that 60-year-old John Alfred Flores’ body was discovered on Easter. Flores, a domestic violence suspect, was jailed after an incident Sunday morning. Early reports are calling it a suicide. The Los Angeles Coroner will release the official cause of death after... Burbank City Council begins new year with more controversy

Photo:Councilman Dave Golonski from Burbank City website. I was at last Tuesday’s Burbank City Council meeting and it was truly a disappointment. A couple of actions by  the council are still bugging me. Yeah, there’s some other stuff that I thought was kind of whacked as well, but two decisions at the January 5 meeting stick out the most and are of great concern. I can’t help wondered about the ramifications of those decisions. First, Councilman Dave Golonski’s attack on two members of the  Burbank Civil Service Board is really disturbing. Golonski... Burbank Police Commissioners get fired up!

Photo: FLLewis/A Writer’s Groove — Burbank Police and Fire Headquarters at Third Street & Orange Grove Avenue. Burbank Police Commission meetings at police headquarters are getting more and more interesting. Last night’s meeting brimmed with drama including verbal fireworks and one commissioner abruptly walking out in a huff. The way I see it, these are the growing pains of commissioners who are struggling to break out of an old sedentary model and leave a “do nothing” reputation behind, or as new Commissioner Ray Adams put it,”… beef up our strength…be more valuable to the community.” To this I say, right... A Burbank official goes on the attack over those police lawsuits

Photo: FLLewis/A Writer’s Groove —Burbank Police and Fire Headquarters. In a recent Los Angeles Times story about the FBI probe and those lawsuits filed by former and current members of the Burbank Police Force, Burbank City Attorney Dennis Barlow had very little to say. City Attorney Barlow is quoted as saying he “… was unable to comment on the FBI investigation or the lawsuits against the city and Police Department, citing pending litigation.” Barlow may be mum, but another major player in the Burbank City Attorney’s Office has had...
