City Buzz: Voters have spoken, change comes to Burbank

2013 election results 2013 will be remembered as the year Burbank residents got fed up with the status quo, opened up those mail-in ballot packets from the City Clerk’s Office, and voted by the thousands for change in the Media City. Historic. Decisive. Profound. The meaning of the voters’ decision in both the primary and general elections will be felt throughout B-town for a long, long time. In case anyone thought the election of newcomer Bob Frutos in last February’s primary, with more than 50% of the vote, over three... Read More →

City Buzz: Turmoil at Burbank City Hall

I don’t know a delicate way to put this so I’ll just bottom line it and ask, “… what the blank is going on at Burbank City Hall?” Lately,  a lot of the decisions and actions by city officials have been very confusing or down right weird. Let’s start with City Manager Mike Flad. On his way out the door, Flad slammed the brakes on what appeared to be a hasty decision to search for a permanent police chief. Flad is making the dash to South Gate to fill... Read More →

Outgoing Burbank City Manager Mike Flad has put the brakes on the search for a permanent police chief. A news release about the decision was sent out late this afternoon from Public Information Officer Drew Sugars. A lot of changes at City Hall lately and many of them strange and confusing, however, this move makes plenty of sense. Here’s the news release: City Suspends Search for Permanent Police Chief Recruitment process on hold pending the hiring of a new city manager BURBANK, Calif. (September 27, 2012) – Burbank City Manager... Read More →

More surprises from Burbank City Hall today. City Manager, Mike Flad, is one step out the door. This is no rumor  — it ‘s the official word. Late this afternoon a news release came out announcing Flad has “tentatively accepted the position” as city manager of South Gate. You gotta  wonder about Flad’s move coming at a time when he’s handling the all-important recruitment and hiring of a permanent Burbank Police Chief. Here’s the official release from Public Information Officer, Drew Sugars.   Burbank City Manager Accepts Position with City... Read More →

Burbank General Election winners: Measure U by a wide margin and Gabel-Luddy by less than 100 votes

Burbank’s General Election 2011 is history, but it will be talked about for some time. I joined a small group of election watchers in the lobby of City Hall last night, to wait for the returns to come in. It was a long wait! The deadline for turning in those controversial mail-in ballots was 7 p.m. Despite this early deadline the first return numbers were not posted until after 9 p.m.  Measure U sailed to an easy victory with 5, 264 Yes votes against 2, 555 No votes. A City Hall... Read More →
