Hazmat situation at Disney Studios Burbank

Burbank Fire units and Hazmat team were spotted rushing through the Buena Vista Street entrance of the Walt Disney Studios today. It happened just before 9 a.m. this morning. ABC-7 reported the problem was acid leaking from an overheated battery on one of the sound stages. Fire personnel contained the spill and treated “eight employees complaining of minor symptoms,” according to a news release from Simone McFarland, Burbank public information officer.  Apparently the fumes from the leak caused some distress, but no one was transported to the hospital. September 11 tribute in Burbank on Sunday

Tribute to the victims and heroes of the September 11 attacks is set to take place at 6:45 a.m., tomorrow morning, on the steps of the headquarters of the Burbank Police and Fire Departments, 200 North 3rd Street. Meanwhile, USA Today has interesting article on “Ten things you may have forgotten  about 9/11” including the ties the hijackers had to Saudi Arabia.  Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia.

Huge house fire in Burbank under investigation

A huge house fire on East Angeleno Avenue in Burbank is under investigation today. Yesterday morning, a fierce battle was waged to try to save the two-story structure.  Fire crews from the surrounding area were involved in the fight. The first to arrive on the scene at around 9:40 a.m. were from Burbank and Glendale. Burbank Costco reopens today after hazmat incident

Burbank’s Costco is back in business today after shutting down yesterday afternoon due to a hazmat incident. Shortly after 4 p.m. yesterday a refrigerant line apparently ruptured. “The 911 call reported a possible Freon leak after a loud bang. Any report of a gas or chemical involved in an incident initiates a Hazardous Materials response,”  said Captain Peter Hendrickson, Burbank Fire spokesman, in an email. Armed robbery and fire at Burbank market under investigation

An armed robbery and fire at the Sevan Mini Market is under investigation today by both the Burbank Police and Fire Departments. The market at 1516 North San Fernando Boulevard was on fire when police officers arrived on the scene last night at around 8:50 p.m. “The officers made contact with the victim, who reported he’d been robbed by at least three suspects, with one or more being armed with a firearm,” said Sergeant Claudio Losacco in a news release. Big doings in Downtown Burbank today.  Kicking things off, the 51st annual Burbank Community YMCA Pancake Breakfast. A plume of smoke from a fire burning in the 300 block of West Spazier Avenue in Burbank could be seen for miles today. At one point, the column of smoke was so tall and so dark that some spectators thought there might be a brush fire on the rampage. That turned out not to be the case. Burbank Police and Fire investigators today are working to determine the cause of an apartment fire which apparently killed a woman. It happened in the 200 block of East Alameda Avenue yesterday. A cold snap has held the Southland in a frigid grip for several days with night temps in near or below freezing in many places. Tonight, the temperature is expected to dip down into the chilly zone in many places. Burbank, which has had lows in the 30s this week, will see the temperature drop into the low 40s tonight. Burbank police officer who rescued fire victim identified

The Burbank police officer, who probably saved the life of an elderly man in that dramatic fire rescue yesterday, has been identified. Officer Brent Fekety arrived on the scene shortly after 9 a.m. with several other members of the Burbank PD. The home at 326 South Griffith Park Drive was on fire. An elderly Burbank resident is recovering in the hospital today after being pulled from his burning home at 326 South Griffith Park Drive. The fire was called into the Burbank Fire Department at around 9:10 a.m. Neighbor, Linda Rosen, was one of those who called 9-1-1. Burbank Fire Chief Tom Lenahan takes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

        Burbank Vice-Mayor, Bob Frutos, issued the now famous  ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to Burbank Fire Chief Tom Lenahan who accepted! Chief Lenahan embraced the challenge to help in the fight against  Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which attacks the nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. It’s also known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.” Chief Lenahan took the ice buckets up in Wildwood Canyon Park last Monday, August 25, while drawing attention to the drought. See it here.

Burbank PD investigating stabbing of two victims

Two stabbing victims reportedly are in serious condition tonight after an apparent attack in the Burbank hill area. Burbank Police officers and Burbank Fire paramedics responded to a 9-1-1 call and discovered the victims, two males in their early 20s, near  the 1000 block of East Angeleno Avenue this afternoon, according to a news release from the BPD. Burbank Fire helps battle blaze in Glendora, also seeking new recruits

    Several  hundred firefighters are battling the Colby fire in Glendora for a second day.  Three Burbank Fire engines and 12 personnel reportedly are involved in that fire fight. The flames broke out in the hills there yesterday and were fueled by those strong Santa Ana winds. Fire crews were on the line overnight putting out hot spots. Federal agency investigates suspicious fire in Burbank

Federal agents are now investigating that huge fire, which gutted the Wholesale Giant, Inc., a large tobacco and cigarette business at 4410 West Victory Boulevard, between Manning and Dymond Streets, early yesterday. The fire alarm sounded at 3:30 a.m. as flames raced through the structure which was packed with merchandise including flammable butane containers used to refill cigarette lighters. Fire Service Day was celebrated in Downtown Burbank today with demonstrations, exhibits, displays, and special treats for the kids. In years past, a number of other agencies and groups have participated. This time around, the Burbank Fire Department partnered with only the Burbank Police Department and the California Highway Patrol — in conjunction with National Police Week.
