Music of the civil rights movement topic at Burbank event

Music that inspired the civil rights movement will be the topic of an event in Burbank tonight. Bob Santelli, executive director of the Grammy Museum, will lead the discussion. Santelli is a well-known blues and rock historian. Burbank City Council candidates’ forum tomorrow night

The four city council candidates in the April 14, 2015 Burbank General Municipal will face-off at a forum tomorrow night. The candidates will appear on a panel at the Buena Vista Library 300 North Buena Vista Street in Burbank at 7:30 p.m. The contenders are incumbent Emily Gabel-Luddy, Will Rogers, Juan Guillen, and Chris Rizzotti. Long lost brother of notorious mob boss Al Capone

Jeff McArthur has written a book about the long lost brother of infamous 1920s mob boss, Al Capone. The older brother, Vincenzo Capone, changed his name to Richard Hart and worked on the side of law and order. McArthur’s book is “Two Gun Hart” and he will be speaking about it and signing copies at the Burbank Central Library. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

“Mother Rabbit” a memoir set in the Playboy empire

“Mother Rabbit” is based on the real-life adventure of a Bunny Mother at a Playboy Club back in the 1960’s, during the struggle between the old school mores and the new feminist views of women. The memoir is a collaborative effort between two sisters. Alyce Bonura who lived the adventure, then used it as a stepping stone to an MBA and a career as a Southland financial and tax expert. And Bonura’s  younger sibling author, Tekla Dennison Miller, who is a former prison warden.

Dewey the dragon new mascot for Burbank libraries

Catching up: New mascot for Burbank library feted

The studious and very green new mascot for the Burbank library was unveiled at a ceremony last Wednesday. Dewey the Dragon is the creation of Burbank artist Chris Runco. Last March, the community development and leadership organization, Burbank Neighborhood Leadership Program, launched a contest to find a “creative mascot” to promote the city’s three library branches. They got more than a hundred entries. The unveiling of Dewey took place at the Buena Vista branch of the Burbank library.

Put your thinking caps on? A contest is underway to find a creative mascot for the Burbank libraries. They are looking for a colorful costumed character who will “… champion reading and literacy in the community,” according to a news release. Cool out in Burbank during the heat wave

Looking for a cool place to chill out for a while on this sizzling hot weekend? Check out a couple of the libraries in the Media City– which have been designated as cooling centers by Burbank officials. Hours of operation have been extended at the Buena Vista Library located at 300 North Buena Vista Street.. Burbank Northwest Library: Officially open for business today

    Back in business! The Northwest Branch of the Burbank Library officially reopened to the public today. As reported here earlier here, the branch at 3323 West Victory Boulevard was closed last August for earthquake retrofitting, up grades, and general renovations. Burbank Northwest Library reopening ceremony this weekend

A reopening ceremony is on tap tomorrow for the nearly 41-year-old Northwest Branch of the Burbank Library. Since August first of last year, the library branch at 3323 West Victory Boulevard has been closed for upgrades and renovations. The festivities on Saturday begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. followed by an open house until noon. The public is invited to come out and tour the new Northwest branch. The library officially reopens on Monday, July 22. Normal hours are Monday-Friday noon-6 p.m.

Two Burbank libraries designated cooling centers during heat wave

Starting today, folks in Burbank will get some relief from the heat wave. Two of the city’s libraries will have longer hours through Sunday, providing cool places to escape hot temperatures in the 90s and even triple digits. Burbank city council candidates pleaded their case for votes at a forum hosted by the Burbank Association of Realtors yesterday. The candidates: Dr. David Gordon, Jess Talamantes, Mayor Dave Golonski, and David Nos. The forum, at the Burbank Central Library, drew only about 35-50 people, but it was very insightful and at times disturbing. More on it coming.

Burbank Central Library open for business

After being closed for more than a week due to water damage, the Central Library in Burbank reopened today. Burbank public information officer Keith Sterling says, “..first time this length of closure in recent memory.” The library at 110 North Glenoaks Boulevard was shutdown on Saturday, April 9, after a water pipe ruptured in one of the book sections. The pipe was in the ceiling. The damage included carpets and books — one-to-two thousand were destroyed in the accident.
