Media City Buzz: Big changes ahead for Burbank as a second councilmember bows out of the 2022 election

Mayor Jess Talamantes’ decision not to run for re-election opens the door for big changes in Burbank. Over the years, many residents have burned my ears with complaints about the city council and how it handles major issues and controversies. It’s a fact; City Council votes affect the quality of life of the 100-thousand plus people who call the Media City home. Most residents rarely think about the five elected officials on the city council. That is, until they are directly impacted by street parking battles, development expansion, or perhaps... National Night Out a big success in Burbank

A big turnout for the Burbank Police sponsored National Night Out 2022.  The event began at 5:30 p.m. last Tuesday, Aug. 2, when the temperature was still above 80 degrees.  Despite the heat they came, some pushing strollers with dogs on leashes and kids in tow.  Burbank PD estimates the crowd at around 750. City Buzz: Mayor’s health episode and city election candidates

Burbank Mayor, Jess Talamantes, suffered a health episode over the weekend. After attending the Mayor’s Tree Lighting ceremony on the steps of Burbank City Hall last Saturday night, December 3,  the councilman reportedly went to dinner at Don Cuco restaurant on East Orange Avenue. It is there that the mayor started feeling some discomfort, went to the men’s room, and collapsed! At 8:30 p.m. paramedics reportedly transported Talamantes to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center over at Buena Vista Street and Alameda Avenue. It was determined the mayor had a syncopal... Who’s running for Burbank City Council?

It’s hard to turn away from national politics with the erratic and over the top Donald Trump trying to bully his way into the White House. Especially now that Trump has launched into an all out feud with the Republican establishment. Drama, drama, and more drama! Nevertheless, back here in Burbank, campaigns are quietly gearing up for the battle for three seats on the city council, where very important local issues are decided, such as growth and development in the city. I have heard rumblings that certain... Read More →

Talk of the town: Burbank City Council’s controversial vote on Walmart

During the past week, I’ve discovered the Walmart vote by the Burbank City Council last month is still on the minds of a lot of folks. Monday at the Burbank Coordinating Council meeting, keynote speaker, Mayor Jess Talamantes, cheerfully reminded the audience of the 4-to-1 council vote in favor of allowing Walmart to move forward without restrictions or delays in its plans for The Great Indoors site at the Empire Center. Mayor Talamantes said, “They’re going to be issued permits to do what they need to do… to the interior.”... Read More →

Photo Gallery: Burbank Coordinating Council celebrates big birthday

The Burbank Coordinating Council is one hard working organization. As it celebrates birthday number 79 — the council, led by President Janet Diel, shows no sign of slowing down. The BCC’s Holiday Basket Program reportedly provided food and gifts for over 500 needy families during the Christmas season last year. Now the attention turns to summer and fundraising for its campership program, which has been in operation since 1936. The program provides one week of summer camp for underprivileged kids, ages 8-18. Diel says the BCC receives 100-to-200 applications a year. In... Read More →

A letter from Burbank Mayor Jess Talamantes

Today one of Burbank’s classroom warriors got some high marks, kudos, and acknowledgement from Mayor Jess Talamantes in a letter released to the media. Here’s the full text. As Mayor of the City of Burbank I am writing this letter in support of one of Burbank’s middle school teachers, Ms. Rebecca Mieliwocki, who was named the 2012 California Teacher of the Year, and is one of the four finalists nationwide for the 2012 National Teacher of the Year award.
