Burbank float wins major award at 2023 Rose Parade

Wow! Burbank did it again. The City of Burbank won the Queen Trophy for the most outstanding presentation of roses in the 134th Rose Parade today. The Burbank Tournament of Roses Association submitted, “Adventure Awaits.” This year’s parade theme, “Turning the Corner.” Former Arizona Congressmember, Gabby Gifford, did the honors as Grand Marshal. Utility scammers target residents and business owners

Utility scammers target Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena

As the holidays near, utility scammers are ramping up their schemes to get money out of residents and business owners in Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena. Recently during a two-week period, Burbank Water and Power reportedly received more than 40 calls from customers complaining about phony utility workers trying to squeeze them for money. Updated: Reality TV show producer gunned down in Pasadena

Updated: 11:50 p.m. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s  Department is reporting a suspect in the shooting death of TV producer Joe McMahon has been located. The unidentified suspect was discovered in his vehicle, dead from an apparent “self-inflicted gunshot wound,” at around 4 p.m. in the West Los Angeles area, according to a news release. The suspect is believed to be in his early twenties. Armenian Genocide Centennial 100km hike/cycle/ride

The first Armenian Genocide Centennial 100km tribute hike/cycle/ride kicks off on Thanksgiving Day. The event is in honor  the Armenians in the Turkish Empire who were forced to march to their death in World War 1. The tribute involves a hike 100km ( 62 miles ) for the 100 years, spread over four days,Thanksgiving Day through Sunday.

The hike in the San Gabriel Mountains for the first three days. Participants will camp out at night. On the last day, the hikers will exit on Lake Avenue in Pasadena and walk all the way to  the Montebello Armenian Genocide Memorial in Montebello where they  will be joined by the cyclists and motorcycle riders.

Armenian Hikers Association, AHA!, Armenian Hiking Society, Armenian Cycling Association, and Hye Riders MC Club are sponsoring the event. Participants are raising funds, which will be donated to Research on Armenian Architecture.

“Fashion meets Phil” Burbank Philharmonic Orchestra

A spectacular evening of music and fashion is planned for the opening night gala of the Burbank Philharmonic Orchestra’s 24th concert season. Several Burbank Philharmonic musicians will be wearing gowns created for this special evening by the talented fashion designers at Woodbury University.  Soloist, Heidi Hatch, will be performing Glazunov’s “Violin Concerto” and wearing one of the designer creations. This is the second year of the partnership between the university and the orchestra.

The free concert will be held at the Ambassador Auditorium. The Burbank Philharmonic music director, Steven Kerstein, conducts the program. Street parking is limited. Parking in the structure is $10. More information at http://burbankphilharmonic.com/bpo/2014/09/21/fall-concert

Check out a winner up close. The Burbank float, “Deep Sea Adventures,” grabbed the judges attention and won the fantasy trophy at the 124th Rose Parade yesterday. “Deep Sea Adventures” will be on display in the Burbank Central Library parking lot, Glenoaks Boulevard and Olive Avenue, starting tomorrow January 3 at 9 a.m. Food trucks on site at lunch time. Tournament of Roses 2013 Queen announced today

Big announcement in Pasadena today. The Tournament of Roses selected Vanessa Natalie Manjarrez as the 2013 Rose Queen. Manjarrez beat out more than 900 hopefuls. The 17-year-old Pasadena resident was named to the Royal Rose Court on October 8. Manjarrez and six princesses will reign over the 2013 Tournament of Roses festivities including the 124th Rose Parade and 99th Rose Bowl game. Manjarrez will be crowned during an official coronation ceremony in the Pasadena Convention Center a week from this Thursday, October 25.

Another hot one in Burbank and the rest of the Southland today. The temperatures are expected to soar into the mid-90s — even the triple digits by this afternoon in B-town.
