Strong winds down tree in Burbank

The gusting Santa Ana winds claimed a victim in Burbank this morning. Strong winds knocked down a sweet gum tree on Oak Street near Beachwood Drive shortly after 8 a.m. Only minutes before,  students swarmed through the intersection to get to nearby David Starr Jordan Middle School on Mariposa Street. An Oak Street resident says she heard “a crack and then a bang!” The tree toppled across Oak Street, striking a parked white Saturn. Damage appeared to be minor. Also, the sweet gum tree took down a utility line.... Read More →

Watch out for that fake earthquake warning

Earthquakes are serious business in the Southland. The shaking has continued almost non-stop since that 5.1 sizeable quake struck near La Habra last Friday night causing some damage. The U.S. Geological Survey says there have been hundreds of aftershocks. This morning, there were a couple of 2.5 tremors and a 3.0 shaker in the area of Friday’s moderate quake. Understandably, some folks are a little jittery and some nerves a bit frayed.  And someone is trying to make that situation worse. There’s a fake letter reportedly... Read More →

Earthquakes shake up the Southland and movie screenings of “Noah”

A lot of rocking and rolling in SoCal Friday evening as dozens of earthquakes rumble through the region.  A 3.6 magnitude quake near La Habra at 8:03 p.m.last night kicked off a swarm of shakers centered in Orange County. That was apparently a foreshock to a moderate 5.1 quake, which rolled and swayed through our area at around 9:09 p.m.. It  was felt in seven counties — from Ventura to the Mexican border.  We definitely felt that one here in Burbank! There have been more than 30... Read More →

Earthquake rocks the Southland today!

UPDATE: 8:12 a.m. The quake was felt as far north as Santa Barbara and south to Fullerton in Orange County. Seismologist, Robert W. Graves, says the quake was felt by so many people because the epicenter was so close to a population center. Graves, speaking at a news conference at Caltech in Pasadena,  also said “it is possible” the shaker could be a “foreshock” to an even larger quake. So far, no reports of serious injury or damage.   The Southland rocked this morning by an earthquake.... Read More →

“Looking for love” contest: Win book contract, $10,000, and maybe get movie deal

There are tons of talented writers in the Southland, especially here in the Media City, with all kinds of stories to tell. One of them could have just what Quirk Books is searching for through its “Looking for love” contest. Quirk is not on the prowl for the typical love story. This company likes to publish offbeat books like “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,” which became a New York Times bestseller and is in development to become a movie. Another Quirk book, “Miss Peregrine’s Home... Read More →

Some sun today — but more rain coming

After morning showers, the sun came out in Burbank today. Don’t get fooled and ditch that umbrella, the vicious storm system that beat the heck out of the Southland yesterday — is not done yet. There’s a 20 percent chance of  more rain today — and thunderstorms that could produce hail! It will be breezy, but not like the strong winds we got yesterday. Freaky weather: sunshine, rain, and hail in Burbank

A brief period of sunshine gave way to more dark clouds, then rain, and just before noon, hail in Burbank!  The hard pebbles pounded the roof of my house and created white patches of quickly melting ice on the ground in the hillside area. The weather is freaky out there today. Don’t get faked out by a little sunshine —  keep that umbrella handy.

Sun comes out after storm barrels through Southland

The still soggy Southland got dumped on by another storm system.
