“Jurassic World” stomps competition and breaks records

As predicted, Universal’s “Jurassic World” was a monster at the box office  over the weekend. The dino-pix stomped the competition and now owns the record for the biggest weekend debut in the U.S. with a haul of $208.8 million. The previous record holder “Marvel’s The Avengers” (2012) slipped down into second place with $207.4 million. Art festival returns to Downtown Burbank this weekend

Downtown Burbank will be alive this weekend with the creative vibe and works of more than 100 artists from traditional painters, photographers, sculptors to special effects wizards and hip urban street painters. The art festival will once again take over several blocks of San Fernando Boulevard, between  Angeleno Avenue and Magnolia Boulevard. Christmas is coming and so are those holiday movies. The poster for Disney’s “Into the Woods” is out. This is the first poster for the Stephen Sondheim musical, according to The Disney Blog. Warner Bros. CEO admits layoffs are coming

Apparently no one’s job is safe at Warner Bros. A lot of tension and frayed nerves there as the employees wait to see who will get the axe.  In an office memo yesterday, CEO Kevin Tsujihara confirmed reports that layoffs are coming. Tsujihara did not say how many jobs would be cut, but said the axe will fall  “across the Studio. ” Warner, based in Burbank,  has somewhere around 8, 000 employees globally. Disney expansion project clears major hurdle

Another major studio expansion project is working its way through the political process. Disney’s Golden Oak Ranch revamp was approved by the Los Angeles Regional Planning Commission yesterday. Last April, NBCUniversal got the go ahead from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for its  $1.6 billion 25-year Evolution Plan, which the studio says will generate 30,000 jobs. Disney’s Golden Oak Ranch expansion now goes to the Sups for their approval. Golden Oak Ranch is in Santa Clarita and Disney wants to develop 58 acres off Placerita Canyon... Read More →

Another big search for new talent. Entertainment heavyweight DreamWorks is holding an open casting call for a lead role in its upcoming film, “Welcome To People,” starring Elizabeth Banks and Chris Pine.  Actor Rob Lowe reportedly part of the group that bought Miramax Miramax, a hot commodity in Hollywood, has been sold to a group of investors led by Billionaire/Construction Magnate, Ronald Tutor. The price tag — somewhere between $600-$675 million. The announcement came out yesterday. Late today, The Wrap reported that Actor Rob Lowe is among the investors.
