Devastating Southland storm triggers mud flows & evacuations

Photo: Anne Cusack/Los Angeles Times — a runaway mud flow sweeps away trees and rocks and races down a street in La Cañada Flintridge today. Check out the L.A. Times storm photo gallery here. A vicious storm sucker punched the Southland early this morning, unleashing landslides, swift mud flows, causing power outages, damaging around 43 homes, and forcing evacuations. Some areas got as much as four inches of rain from this latest series of stormy weather. Here in Burbank, I was awakened by loud, rumbling thunder followed by some intense pounding rain on the roof before... Read More →

Showers in the Southland

The Southland is getting pelted by more rain showers again. The rain rolled in overnight and by morning, there were reports of flooding and snarled traffic on local highways and roads. Weather watchers are predicting this storm will come through in three waves — the first is dumping on the region now — light showers to heavy rain — depending on where you are. The second wave is due this afternoon and then, the third arrives sometime on Saturday. A light rain falling in Burbank this morning, but it will become heavier later on in... Read More →

Official White House photo by Pete Souza — A beautiful shot of the White House this morning after a night of snow from The White House Blog. East Coast vs the West Coast. They’re shoveling snow in Washington, DC, while we’re basking in the bright sunshine here in the Southland. This morning, they woke up to a snow day at the White House after a snowy night in the nation’s capital. Sunshine in the Southland

Hello, sunshine!! The rain is gone and the sun is out in the Southland. Here in Media City this afternoon, the temperature is around 66, but feels warmer. The weather is expected to be sunny with comfy temps in the 60s and even low 70s in the Southland for the next few days.

Here we go again, rain!!!

Burbank and the Southland are getting dumped on by another winter storm this afternoon. Weather watchers are saying it’s not going to be as bad as expected. We are getting a “glancing blow” rather than a full punch from this storm.   It should roll out of here by tomorrow, after dropping about a quarter of an inch or half-inch  or so of rain. Then our weather should be sunny and mild through next week. As much as we need the rain, I’m looking forward to a longer stretch of sunshine and warmer temps.

Sunshine, cloudy skies, cold temps, and a chance of rain

We will probably get through the rest of the weekend without the need for umbrellas, but keep them handy. After a cold night with temperatures in Burbank and other parts of the Southland dropping down into the low 40s and some 30s, it should be sunny with patchy clouds on Sunday. Temps will warm up only into the 50s here in Media City, according to the weatherforyou.com website. Other weather reports predict we’ll get up into the 60s. Those cloudy skies will linger through the beginning of the week and by... Read More →

More thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail coming!!!

We’ve had so much rain, the flowers and plants in my yard are drooping from it all.  This evening, I discovered clusters of white pebbles in the puddles in the flower beds. The pebbles — small ice chips — hail. I got caught in a hail/rainstorm around 6 p.m. while out running some quick errands in Burbank. One cloudburst dropped so much rain, I had trouble seeing through the windshield even though the wipers were whipping back and forth like crazy. Many areas of the Southland, were battered by rain, hail, and wind today. Also,... Read More →

Southland slammed by wind, rain, hail, and tornadoes!

Photo: Gina Ferazzi/Los Angeles Times — A man watches mud, water, and debris wash down a street in front of his Sierra Madre home yesterday. Two powerful storms pounded the Southland over the past couple of days, and weather watchers are predicting a third truly monstrous system will roll through before we get a chance to dry out. When I got out this morning, it was chilly and the skies overcast. Soon the showers arrived with rumbling thunder, flashes of lightning, and heavy downpours. As I drove along a street... Read More →

Stormy weather in the Southland

Burbank and the rest of the Southland are in for a serious drenching, according to weather watchers. A storm swooped down on “Media City” this afternoon and it has been raining off and on here since then. The light patter of rain falling on the roof is rather soothing, but the weather situation is expected to get pretty rough later in the week. The temps will dip down into the 50s, perhaps even the 40s tonight with the high only reaching near 60 tomorrow, MLK Jr. Day. This storm is reportedly... Read More →

News Bytes: A very stormy weekend, new pay restrictions for bailed out firms & more trouble for Tiger Woods

Rain, rain, and more rain  Who says it doesn’t really rain in Southern California?  The storms that have rolled through the region so far have packed quite a punch, and another big one is set to hit tonight.  Some areas are getting pretty soggy, so the threat of mudslides, especially in the neighborhoods ravaged by wildfires, remains high. A steady rain has been falling most of the day in Burbank, but that’s not stopping exercisers, wearing slick jogging suits and carrying colorful umbrellas, from getting out. Also, there are still knuckleheads speeding... Read More →

The rain is baaack!!

The Southland is getting drenched by a new storm tonight, possibly the first of two to roll through our area over the next few days. Weather observers are predicting 1/4 to 3/4 of an inch of precipitation from this first storm. Raindrops began falling at around 9 p.m. tonight in Burbank. We’re supposed to get periods of heavy rain in the early morning hours. This storm system is warmer than that arctic blast that pounded our area earlier in the week. Tonight the lows will be in the 40s and 50s. At 11... Read More →

Stormy weather causes havoc in the Southland

Sunny skies today will help dry out Burbank and the rest of the Southland from some very stormy weather. We got slammed by a cold Pacific storm that swooped down from Alaska and rolled through our area yesterday. Hundreds of accidents on the freeways. There were some evacuations in the communities burned by the wildfires, but residents there managed to get through it all without  any major mudslides or flooding.  And the mountains got snow — down to around 15-hundred feet. Last night, snowfall shut down the Grapevine, a main artery between Northern and Southern California. At around 9:30 this... Read More →

Freaky weather in the Southland

The weather turned very freaky today. Those overcast skies this morning did not give way to sunshine as was the case during the past few days. Instead wacky thunderstorms rolled through parts of Southern California this afternoon bringing lightning, thunder, rain, and even some hail in places like the coastal community of Venice. Two women were reportedly injured by lightning; one victim died in Fontana, the other was hospitalized  near Palm Springs. Some of those lightning strikes sparked a number of minor brush fires. One flared up near the San Dimas golf course and quickly grew... Read More →

Photo Gallery: Hot summer-like weather heats up the Southland

Photo: FLLewis/A Writer’s Groove – Burbank Get out those shorts and tee shirts; we’re getting a preview of summer. Today the temperatures climbed into the mid-80s in Burbank. Tomorrow the high is expected to leap 10 degrees to 95, maybe even into triple digits!  Weather forecasters say this blast of summer could linger for a few days.  So for workout warriors who like to exercise outside in the sunshine, the best advice is to do it early and keep the water bottle handy.

More showers for our drought plagued Southland

Showers are sweeping through the Southland today. In Burbank, a steady rain is falling and it’s cold this morning. The temperature is around 50.  Only a few days ago, folks here were out jogging, walking, or driving with their convertible tops down in 80 degree weather! Right now the Golden State is suffering through drought conditions, so every little bit of rain is a big deal. Last June, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a “statewide drought” after two years of below average rainfall. 2009 started off pretty dry until last month, when we got pounded by several major... A series of powerful storms headed to the Southland

Get those umbrellas out!  Major rainstorms are bearing down on Southern California. In Burbank this morning, light rain fell off and on. Weather experts say it’s just a precursor to some serious storm drama.  Yes, that means Valentine’s Day will more than likely be wet and cold. Yet, I doubt that will slow the celebration of love on Saturday; and that’s as it should be. The first wave of bad weather is expected to pound our area this afternoon through the evening. Weather reports say we could get thunderstorms, hail, and gusty winds. A second... Read More →

Working off those holiday pounds in sunny California

FLLewis/A Writer’s Groove — Burbank   Now is definitely the time to kick that sluggish or dormant workout plan into high gear. The holiday noshing is over; the business of working off those extra pounds is well underway for a lot of folks. I was out this week, huffing and puffing my way through the Burbank foothills along with other walkers and joggers. This morning, when I stepped outside it was around 45 in Burbank. I thought that was a bit chilly. Still, today’s weather forecast is for sunny... Read More →

Another winter storm on the way

Brian Vander Brug/Los Angeles Times Palm trees drooped under the weight of snow at the Antelope Valley Mall during last week’s powerful storm in the Southland. Today is the first official day of winter. Despite what the calendar says we got hammered by a serious winter storm last week. More stormy weather is headed our way with wind, rain, snow, and cold temperatures. In fact, it could be a wet and rainy Christmas 2008 in Southern California. Brian Vander Brug/Los Angeles Times A stranded motorist shoveled... Read More →

Southland slammed by more stormy weather

More cold temperatures, heavy rain, and snow caused havoc in the Southland today. Flooding, snow, and ice made travel on local highways and roads treacherous, forcing some closures. Most surprisingly, the snow level dropped to around 1500 feet. Late today, falling snow shut down highway 14 into the Antelope Valley. Hundreds of motorists waiting and hoping to get home to Lancaster or Palmdale had to turn around and find another way home or spend the night elsewhere. Also, there are reports of weather-related power outages in parts of Los Angeles County. In Burbank,... Read More →

The Southland gets pounded by a deadly storm

Gina Ferrazzi/Los Angeles Times A tragic Southland highway accident scene where a CHP officer was struck and killed by an out of control car yesterday.   The first serious winter storm to swoop down on Southern California turned out to be a real doozie. The most powerful portion came through late Sunday and yesterday, but it’s not over yet. The Arctic storm came packing heavy rains, cold temperatures, snow, and hail; causing treacherous conditions that resulted in several injuries and two deaths. On Monday, more than a dozen people were injured... Read More →
